Only One Life

Two little lines I heard one day, Traveling along life's busy way; Bringing conviction to my heart, And from my mind would not depart; Only one life, 'twill soon be past, Only what's done for Christ will last.

[C.T. Studd]

Romans 2:7 … To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

2 Corinthians 4:17 … For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;

2 Timothy 4:7-8 … I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

2 Corinthians 5:10 … For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

1 Peter 1:3-4 … Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you. ♥

Mountain Moving Faith

A small congregation in the foothills of the Great Smokies built a new sanctuary on a piece of land willed to them by a church member. Ten days before the new church was to open, the local building inspector informed the pastor that the parking lot was inadequate for the size of the building.

Until the church doubled the size of the parking lot, they would not be able to use the new sanctuary. Unfortunately, the church with its undersized parking lot had used every inch of their land except for the mountain against which it had been built. In order to build more parking spaces, they would have to move the mountain out of the back yard.

Undaunted, the pastor announced the next Sunday morning that he would meet that evening with all members who had "mountain moving faith." They would hold a prayer session asking God to remove the mountain from the back yard and to somehow provide enough money to have it paved and painted before the scheduled opening dedication service the following week.

At the appointed time, 24 of the congregation's 300 members assembled for prayer. They prayed for nearly three hours. At ten o'clock the pastor said the final "Amen". "We'll open next Sunday as scheduled," he assured everyone. "God has never let us down before, and I believe He will be faithful this time too."

The next morning as he was working in his study there came a loud knock at his door. When he called "come in", a rough looking construction foreman appeared, removing his hard hat as he entered.

"Excuse me, Reverend. I'm from Acme Construction Company over in the next county. We're building a huge new shopping mall over there and we need some fill dirt. Would you be willing to sell us a chunk of that mountain behind the church? We'll pay you for the dirt we remove and pave all the exposed area free of charge, if we can have it right away. We can't do anything else until we get the dirt in and allow it to settle properly."

The little church was dedicated the next Sunday as originally planned and there were far more members with "mountain moving faith" on opening day than there had been the previous week!

Security

The Good Shepherd is Christ. He loves us, He cares for us, and He guides us. When Yeshua Jesus, as God, is your refuge, your hiding place, your stronghold, your shepherd, your counselor, your friend, your redeemer, your saviour, your guide… you don't need to search any further for security.

[adapted from a sermon by Elisabeth Elliot ]

Cell Phone vs. The Bible

What would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cellphone?

What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?

What if we flipped through it several times a day?

What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?

What if we used it to receive messages from the text?

What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it?

What if we gave it to kids as gifts?

What if we used it when we traveled?

What if we used it in case of emergency?

This is something to think about. Where is my Bible?

Unlike our cell phone, we don't have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill... and No Dropped Calls!

Look Up!

“Can you climb?” a captain asked a sailor boy soon after taking him out in his ship. The boy determined to show the captain that he was an able sailor, and began climbing the mast.

The poor boy began to feel dizzy as he went higher and higher. He looked down and saw the dark waters swirling around the ship. Finally, clinging tightly to the mast, he called out, “Sir, I think I’m going to fall!”

“Look up, my boy!” shouted the captain encouragingly.

The boy obeyed. He looked away from the waters below, and successfully made it to the crow’s nest.

So it is with believers. When they look down, and see the waves, they fear; or, like Peter, they begin to sink. (Matthew 14: 28-31)

But when they “look up,” and keep their eyes fixed on Jesus, the difficulty is overcome.

[Adapted from Sermon Illustrations by Lion Foster]

Psalm 121:1 … I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

Psalm 141:8 … But mine eyes are unto thee, O GOD the Lord: in thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute.

Luke 21:28 … And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. ♥

Redeemed, How I love To Proclaim It!

Redeemed how I love to proclaim it, Redeemed by the blood of the lamb, Redeemed through His infinite mercy, His child and forever I am.

Redeemed, and so happy in Jesus, No language my rapture can tell; I know that the light of His presence With me doth continually dwell.

Redeemed, redeemed, Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb; Redeemed, redeemed, His child and forever I am.

I think of my blessed Redeemer, I think of Him all the day long: I sing, for I cannot be silent; His love is the theme of my song.

Redeemed, redeemed, Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb; Redeemed, redeemed, His child and forever I am.

I know I shall see in His beauty The King in whose law I delight; Who lovingly guardeth my footsteps, And giveth me a song in the night.

Redeemed, redeemed, Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb; Redeemed, redeemed, His child and forever I am.

[written by Fanny Crosby – 1882]

Isaiah 43:1 … But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.

He Will Carry You

Footprints in the Sand ~

One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of his life.
This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it. "LORD, You said that once I decided to follow you, You would walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times of my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed You most You would leave me."
The LORD replied, "My son, My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

[ Mary Stevenson ]

Everything we have comes from God. Everything!  Scripture tells us ~ Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God. (Ecclesiastes 5;19) ~ And the greatest gift God has given us is Jesus Christ, His Son. Let us rejoice in the Lord and give Him thanks in all things. Amen! ℛℒ

Oh, Happy Day

Oh, happy day. Oh, happy day.

Oh, when He washed, when Jesus washed,
When Jesus washed, He washed my sins away!

Oh, happy day. Oh, happy day.

And He'll rejoice in the things we say, everyday.
Everyday.

Oh, happy day. Oh, happy day.
Oh, happy day. Oh, happy day.

Higgins and Miggins

Old Brother Higgins built a shelf, for the family Bible to rest itself, lest a sticky finger or grimy thumb might injure the delicate pages some. He cautioned his children to touch it not, and it rested there with never a blot, though the Higgins tribe were a troublesome lot.

His neighbor, Miggins, built a shelf. “Come, children,” he said, “and help yourself”. His book is old and ragged and worn, with some of the choicest pages torn, where children have fingered and numbered and read. But of the Miggins tribe I’ve heard it said, each carries a Bible in his head.”

Today’s Thorn... Is Tomorrow’s Flower

Once there was a man who asked God for a flower.... ....and a butterfly. But instead God gave him a cactus.... ....and a caterpillar.

The man was sad, he didn’t understand why his request was mistaken. Then he thought: Oh well, God has too many people to care for... and decided not to question.

After some time, the man went to check up on his request that he had left forgotten.

To his surprise, from the thorny & ugly cactus a beautiful flower had grown. And the unsightly caterpillar had been transformed into the most beautiful butterfly.

GOD always does things right! His way is ALWAYS the best way, even if to us it seems all wrong.

If you asked God for one thing & received another, trust. You can be sure that He will always give you what you need at the appropriate time.

What you want is not always what you need!

God never fails to grant our petitions, so keep on going for Him without doubting or murmuring.

GOD GIVES THE VERY BEST TO THOSE WHO LEAVE THE CHOICES UP TO HIM!

On The Other Side

A sick man turned to his doctor, as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, "Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side." Very quietly, the doctor said, "I don't know." "You don't know? You, a Christian man, do not know what is on the other side?"

The doctor was holding the handle of the door; on the other side of which came a sound of scratching and whining, and as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leaped on him with an eager show of gladness.

Turning to the patient, the doctor said, "Did you notice my dog? He's never been in this room before. He didn't know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing...I know my Master is there and that is enough."

Good Works

Believers should be laboring in God’s strength to evangelize and disciple. We are not saved by works (Ephesians 2:8-9). But, Believers do show their faith by their works (James 2:18, 26). Slothfulness violates God’s purpose—good works.

Ephesians 4:22-24 … That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. ♥

What do Angels Look Like?

Like the little old lady who returned your wallet yesterday.

Like the taxi driver who told you that your eyes light up the world, when you smile.

Like the small child who showed you the wonder in simple things.

Like the poor man who offered to share his lunch with you.

Like the rich man who showed you that it really is all possible, if only you believe.

Like the stranger who just happened to come along, when you had lost your way.

Like the friend who touched your heart, when you didn't think you had one.

Angels come in all sizes and shapes, all ages and skin types.

Some with freckles, some with dimples, some with wrinkles, some without.

They come disguised as friends, enemies, teachers, students, lovers and fools.

They don't take life too seriously, they travel light.

They leave no forwarding address, they ask nothing in return.

They are hard to find when your eyes are closed, but when you choose to see, they are everywhere you look.

So, open you eyes and count all your Angels -- for you are truly blessed!

Psalm 91:11 … For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

Hebrews 13:2 … Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. ♥

God Bless America

God Bless America, Land that I love. Stand beside her, and guide her, Thru the night with a light from above.

From the mountains, to the prairies, To the oceans, white with foam, God bless America, My home sweet home.

[Words and music by Irving Berlin - 1938]

Psalm 33:12 … Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. ♥

If Jesus Came to Your House

If Jesus came to your house to spend some time with you, If He came unexpected, I wonder what you'd do.

Oh, I know you'd give your nicest room to such an honored guest, And all the food you'd give to Him would be the very best.

And you would keep assuring Him you're glad to have Him there, That serving Him in your home is joy beyond compare.

But when you saw Him coming, would you meet Him at the door?
With arms outstretched in welcome to your heavenly visitor?

Or would you have to change your clothes before you let Him in?
Or hide some magazines and put the Bible where they'd been?

Would you hide your worldly music and put some hymn books out?
Could you let Jesus walk right in, or would you rush about?

And I wonder - if the Saviour spent a day or two with you,
Would you go right on doing, the things you always do?

Would you go right on saying, the things you always say?
Or would life for you continue as it does from day to day?

Would you take Jesus with you everywhere you go?
Or would you maybe change your plans for just a day or so?

Would you be glad to have Him meet your closest friends?
Or would you hope they stay away, until His visit ends?

Would you be glad to have Him stay forever on and on?
Or would you sigh with great relief when He at last was gone?

It might be interesting to know, the things that you would do,
If Jesus came in person, to spend some time with you.

Prayer Requests

Do you have a need? God is taking prayer requests 24 hours a day ~

Ezra 8:23 … So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.

Matthew 7:7-8 … Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

John 14:13-14 … And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

John 15:16 … Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

Philippians 4:6 … Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

James 5:16 … Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Romans 8:26-27 … Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

1 John 5:14-15 … And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. ♥

The Son

A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art.

When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was notified and grieved deeply for his only son.

About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands.

He said, “Sir, you don’t know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and he died instantly.

He often talked about you, and your love for art.” The young man held out this package. “I know this isn’t much. I’m not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.”

The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in awe at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting.

The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture. “Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It’s a gift”.

The father hung the portrait over his mantle. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.

The man died a few months later. There was to be a great auction of his paintings. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collection.

On the platform sat the painting of the son. The auctioneer pounded his gavel. We will start the bidding with this picture of the son.

Who will bid for this picture?” There was silence.

Then a voice in the back of the room shouted, “We want to see the famous paintings. Skip this one.”

But the auctioneer persisted. “Will someone bid for this painting? Who will start the bidding? $100, $200?” Another voice shouted angrily. We didn’t come to see this painting. We came to see the Van Goghs, the Rembrandts. Get on with the real bids!”

But still the auctioneer continued. “The son! The son! Who’ll take the son?”

Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room. It was the longtime gardener of the man and his son. “I’ll give $10 for the painting.” Being a poor man, it was all he could afford.

“We have $10, who will bid $20?”

“Give it to him for $10. Let’s see the masters” someone shouted.

“$10 is the bid, won’t someone bid $20?”

The crowd was becoming angry. They didn’t want the picture of the son. They wanted the more worthy investments for their collections.

The auctioneer pounded the gavel. “Going once, twice, SOLD for $10!”

A man sitting on the second row shouted, “Now let’s get on with the collection!”

The auctioneer laid down his gavel. “I’m sorry, the auction over.”

“What about the paintings?”

“I am sorry. When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will. I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time. Only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings. The man who took the son gets every thing!”

God gave His son over 2,000 years ago to die on a cruel cross.

Much like the auctioneer, His message today is: “The son, the son, who’ll take the son?” Because, you see, whoever takes the Son gets everything.
