God is Light ...

Light, in the Scriptures, is the emblem of purity, truth, knowledge, prosperity, and happiness - as darkness is of the opposite. John here says that "God is light" ... not the light, or a light, but light itself; that is, he is himself all light and is the source and fountain of light in all worlds.

He is perfectly pure, without any admixture of sin. He has all knowledge, with no admixture of ignorance on any subject. He is infinitely happy, with nothing to make him miserable. He is infinitely true, never stating or countenancing error; he is blessed in all his ways, never knowing the darkness of disappointment and adversity.

[Barnes' Notes on The Bible]

1 John 1:5 ... This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

God or The Devil

The apostle John does not stutter. First, second and third books of John are so clear in describing what a true Christian ‘is’ and ‘is not’.

He goes so far as to put all of humanity into one of two groups.

1) CHILDREN OF GOD

2) CHILDREN OF THE DEVIL

Which group are you in??

[Troi Nelson Cockayne]

>

1 John 3:6-10 ... Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

"The Attributes of God" 2

13. The Grace of God “By grace you have been saved, through faith.” Ephesians 2:8 God's GRACE is His freely giving salvation and Heaven to un-deserving, ill-deserving and Hell-deserving sinners. It was grace that chose us, grace that redeemed us, grace that sustains us. We contributed nothing but sin. Grace shatters pride and fuels worship. The believer lives by grace, serves by grace, and will be glorified by grace. Soli Deo Gloria!

14. The Mercy of God “His mercy endures forever.” Psalm 136:1 God's MERCY is His not giving damnation and Hell to un-deserving, ill-deserving and Hell-deserving sinners. It is God's tender heart moved to act on behalf of the miserable. The cross is the mercy seat where justice and mercy met. Every sinner awakened to his dreadful plight must flee there. Let us thank God daily that He delights in mercy and extend that mercy to others.

15. The Loving-kindness of God “Because Your loving-kindness is better than life…” Psalm 63:3 God's loving-kindness is His steadfast, covenant love expressed in action. It reaches to the heavens, surrounds the believer, and never let's go. It comforts in sorrow, and disciplines in love. The soul that rests in His loving-kindness knows a joy deeper than any worldly pleasure. May it lead you to praise, obedience, and peace.

16. The Love of God “God is love.” 1 John 4:8 God's love is holy, sovereign, and everlasting. He does not love because of who we are, but because of who He is. This love sent Christ to die for enemies, to purchase a people for Himself. It is a love that transforms and keeps. Rest in it. Rejoice in it. Reflect it to others.

17. The Love of God to Us “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” Jeremiah 31:3 That the holy God would love sinful men, is staggering. His love to us is personal, sacrificial, and unbreakable. It is the fountain of every spiritual blessing. Not even death can separate us from it. When all else fails, His love remains. Cling to it in the dark; rejoice in it in the light.

18. The Wrath of God “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven…” Romans 1:18 God's wrath is His holy hatred of sin. It is not uncontrolled rage, but righteous justice. It burned against sin at the cross, and it will be poured out eternally on the unrepentant. Tremble before it but run to Christ, who bore it for all who believe. To ignore God's wrath is spiritual suicide.

19. The Contemplation of God “Fix your thoughts on Jesus…” Hebrews 3:1 To contemplate God is the highest occupation of the soul. In beholding His glory, we are transformed. The more we meditate on His attributes, the more we are lifted from this world's vanities. Let your thoughts be filled with His greatness. You become what you behold gaze on God and be changed.

20. The Blessings of God “Every good and perfect gift is from above.” James 1:17 All blessings flow from God's fatherly hand spiritual and temporal, earthly and eternal. But the greatest blessing is Himself. To have God is to have all. Blessings are not earned but graciously given in Christ. Receive them with gratitude, steward them with faithfulness, and let them turn your heart to the Giver.

21. The Cursing of God “If anyone does not love the Lord, that person is cursed!” 1 Corinthians 16:22 God's curse is the solemn sentence upon sin. It reveals the seriousness of transgression. Yet Christ became a curse for us, that we might be freed from condemnation. The believer no longer fears the curse, for it has fallen on Another. But let us warn others, for outside of Christ, the curse remains.

22. The Gifts of God “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:15 God gives freely, fully, and forever. The gift of His Son is the fountain of every other gift. He gives wisdom, strength, righteousness, and eternal life. We deserve nothing—yet He gives us everything in Christ. Receive His gifts with reverence and use them for His glory.

23. The Guidance of God “He guides the humble in what is right.” Psalm 25:9 God does not leave His people to wander. He guides by His Word, His Spirit, and His providence. His paths may not be smooth, but they are always good. Seek His direction in prayer, submit to it with joy, and trust that He leads with perfect wisdom and fatherly care.

24. The Gospel of the Grace of God “The gospel is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.” Romans 1:16 The gospel is not advice, but divine announcement God saves sinners! It is grace from first to last planned by the Father, accomplished by the Son, applied by the Spirit. It humbles the proud, exalts Christ, and transforms the heart. Proclaim it, cherish it, and never move beyond it.

Holiness of God

Holiness is not merely one attribute of God; it is the very beauty of all that He is. It is the totality of His moral perfection. God's holiness is the infinite distance between His purity, and all that is defiled. God is not just sinless, He is utterly "other" exalted above all creation in majestic sanctity. "God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all." (1 John 1:5)

In Heaven's courts, the seraphim cry, not love, love, love nor power, power, power but holy, holy, holy. This threefold repetition is not poetic flourish; it is the language of awe. His holiness is absolute, incomparable, and consuming. It strikes terror in the hearts of the guilty and causes the redeemed to fall in humility and reverent wonder before Him.

When Isaiah beheld the LORD high and lifted up, he did not marvel at God's wisdom or rejoice in His love he was undone by His holiness. "Woe to me!" he cried. For in the presence of perfect purity every sin is seen as vile, every excuse is silenced, and every boast is laid in the dust. The cross alone unveils the cost of approaching such a God. Divine love did not lower the standard divine holiness demanded that the sinless Son suffer in the place of the guilty.

There, righteousness and mercy met. There, the Holy One made a way for the unholy. What glory, those sinners, once rebels, may now draw near! Clothed in the righteousness of Christ, we are called not only to behold God's holiness but to reflect it. "Without holiness no one will see the Lord." (Hebrews 12:14)

Let us then worship with trembling, walk with purity, and hate every stain of sin. The One who called us is holy so let us be holy in all we do.

[A.W. Pink]

Isaiah 6:3 ... And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

In Love!!

Behold the overflowing riches of the grace and love of Jesus. Every page of the Gospel story teaches the love of His heart to His redeemed people.

In love He receives His people as His own. Before the world was framed, He inscribed them on the tablets of His heart.

In love He undertakes their cause and espouses them as His bride.

In love He works out for them a righteousness so bright, so perfect, so glorious that Jehovah's eye can find no flaw, no spot, no blemish in it.

In love He beautifies them with His shining robe and fits them for the banquet in the Heaven of heavens.

In love He guards them from every foe and makes them more than conquerors over all the hosts of darkness.

In love He causes all things to work together for their good. In love He leads them to lie down in the rich pastures of Bible truth and instructs them in the Word which is "able to make them wise unto salvation."

In love He will come again to receive them to Himself.

In love He will present them pure and blameless to His Father with exceeding joy.

In love He will dwell among them through the ages of eternity!

Entangling Things!

Around us are a thousand entangling things! I see all around me a crowd of alluring, fascinating, pleasurable and dazzling things. Pleasure calls to me; I hear her siren song. Philosophy and learning charm me; gladly would I yield my heart to them. This world is very much like the pools we have heard of in India, in which grows a long grass of so clinging a character that, if a man once falls into the water, it is almost certain to be his death, for only with the utmost difficulty could he be rescued from the meshes of the deadly, weedy net, which immediately wraps itself around him. In the same way, this world is entangling.

All the efforts of grace are needed to preserve men from being ensnared with the deceitfulness of riches, and the cares of this life the ledger demands you, the shop requires you, the warehouse bell rings for you; the theater invites you; the ballroom calls you. You must live, you say, and you must have a little enjoyment and consequently, you give your heart to the world. These things, I say, are very entangling; but we must be disentangled from them, for we cannot afford to lose our souls. "What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?" (Mark 8:36)

If a ship is going down, and a passenger has his gold in a bag, see how he acts. With regret he flings his bag of treasure down upon the deck, for his life is dearer than gold. If he may but save his life, he is willing to lose all else besides. Oh, sirs! For the one thing needful the salvation of your eternal soul all entangling things must be given up.

[Charles H. Spurgeon]

Hebrews 12:1 ... Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

1 John 2:15 ... Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

Old Toledo Blade!

The old Toledo blade cost the warrior much at first, but when he had once procured it, he knew that it would cut through joint and marrow in the day of battle. So, he was not afraid to dash into the thick of the fray, trusting to its unrivaled temper and keen edge. Could he not find a cheaper sword? He could have found it easily enough, and with small expense, but then in the moment when his sword smote upon his enemy's helmet instead of cleaving through the skull, it would snap in the warrior's hand and cost him his life!

In the same way, many professors of the gospel take up a cheap religion. There is, no self-denial in it, no forsaking of the world, no giving up of sinful amusements. They are just the same as the world. Their religion costs them nothing and at last when they need it, it will fail them it will snap like the cheap, poorly made sword in the day of battle, and leave them defenseless.

Oh, if you want that which will endure the conflict, you must expend cost upon it. Many professing Christians never separate from the world no, not they! They fall in with the fashions of the day, as the dead fish floats with the current! Have they any cross to bear? Does anybody mock them for living a holy life? Oh, no! for theirs is the easy religion which the world praises, and consequently the religion which God abhors. "If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him!" (1 John 2:15) He who has the smile of the ungodly, must expect the frown of God. No man has truly committed himself to Christ, unless he has also said, "My Lord, this day I give to You my body, my soul, my talents, my goods, my house, my children, and all that I have. Henceforth I will hold them as Your steward. As for me, I have nothing. I have surrendered all to You."

You cannot be Christ's disciples at any less cost than this. If you possess a farthing that is your own, then Christ is not your Master. It must be all His, every single jot and tittle, and your life also or you cannot be His disciple. Oh, count the cost! If any of you have taken up a religion which costs you nothing then throw it down and flee from it, for it will be your curse and your ruin. But may we not get to Heaven without all this cost? No! You may be counterfeits, you may be hypocrites, you may be brethren of Judas, but you cannot be real Christians.

The cost of the cross is unavoidable, it cannot be lessened one solitary mite. Salvation is not merely deliverance from Hell and eternal suffering. It is deliverance from this world's vain and wicked ways. If you would have justification, you must have sanctification. If you would have pardon of sin, you must have holiness of life. If you would walk the streets of gold above, you must walk the road of holiness below.

[Charles H. Spurgeon]

Luke 14:27, 33 ... And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple ...  So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

How Ravishing is The Thought!!

How ravishing is the thought of eternal love! Try to drink it in. If you are a believer in Christ, you were loved before time began its cycles. In that old eternity, before the earth was born, you were beloved of the Lord. You were dear to Jehovah's heart when this great world, the sun, the moon, the stars slept in the mind of God like unborn forests in an acorn-cup.

He loved you with an everlasting and infinite love. God chose you, not because of any goodness in you but of his own sovereign will and good pleasure. Rejoice in this and let your heart be glad. Never forget that sovereign and eternal election is the source of your every spiritual blessing!

[Charles H. Spurgeon]

How to Conquer The World!

Perhaps the world the smiling world or the frowning world; the tempting world or the persecuting world lies as a heavy stone or burden upon your heart, as it does upon the hearts of thousands in these days. Witness their attempting anything to get the favors, honors and riches of this world!

Ah! how many have turned their backs upon God, and Christ and truth to gain the world! How will you get this burden off? Only by the exercise of faith. Many men may hear many sermons often and yet remain worldly. They may pray like angels and yet live as if there were no Heaven nor Hell. They will talk much of Heaven and yet those who are spiritual and wise, smell their breath to stink strongly of earth.

All their endeavors can never cure them of this soul-killing disease until faith breaks forth in its glorious actings. A man may hear sermons and pray many years and yet remain as carnal, base and worldly as ever! There is no way under Heaven to remove this burden but by the exercise of faith!

Faith presents the world to the soul under all those notions which the Scripture holds forth the world unto us by. The Scripture holds forth the world as an impotent thing, as a mixed thing, as a mutable thing, as a momentary thing. Now faith comes and sets this home with power upon the soul, and this takes the soul off from the world.

Faith causes the soul to converse with those more glorious, soul-satisfying, soul- delighting and soul-contenting objects! Now when faith is busied and exercised about soul-ennobling, soul-greatening, soul-raising and soul-cheering objects, a Christian tramples the world under his feet!

In Hebrews 11, it was the exercise of faith and hope upon noble and glorious objects, which carried them above the world above the smiling world, and above the frowning world, above the tempting world, and above the persecuting world!

Faith conquers the world, by assuring the soul of enjoying of better things. Men may talk much of Heaven, and of Christ and religion. But give me a man who really and clearly lives under the power of divine faith, and I cannot see how such a one can be carried out in an inordinate love to these poor transitory worldly things.

[Thomas Brooks]

Be Like Christ!!

Christians should excel in the manifestation of Christ's character. The mind, which was in Jesus, should be in them. They should consider His character as a model of their own; and be conspicuous for their poverty of spirit, meekness, gentleness, and love.

It is matter of surprise and regret, that many people seem to think that Christianity has nothing to do with character! And that provided they are free from gross sins, and have lively feelings in devotional exercises, they may be as petulant, irritable, and implacable as they please! This is a dreadful error and has done great mischief to the cause of God!

A sour, ill-natured Christian is like a lamb with a wolf's head, or like a dove with a vulture's beak! If there be any one word which above all others should describe a Christian's character, it is that which represents his divine Father; and as it is said, that 'God is love', so should it be also affirmed, that a Christian is love embodied, an incarnation of love! His words, his conduct, his very looks should be so many expressions of love!

[J. A. James]

Ephesians 5:2 ... And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

Matthew 11:29 ... Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Philippians 2:5 ... Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

The God of Light!

Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is to behold the sun. In what believing heart will not these words awaken a quick and grateful response? The renewed man is the only being who knows what true light is, because he only, really knows Jesus. All others are like miners dwelling from their birth beneath the surface of the earth, having never seen the sun, through whose eternal gloom not one vivifying ray has ever pierced. "Darkness covers the earth, and gross darkness the people." (Isaiah 60:2)

When man sinned, God went out of the temple, luminous and glorious with His presence, and the sun of the soul set in guilt, darkness, and death. Henceforth the natural man walks in darkness, not knowing where he goes, until the time of electing love and sovereign grace draws on, when He who at creation's dawn said, "Let there be light, and light was," (Genesis 1:3) causes the light of life to shine, and the soul is immediately "translated out of darkness into His marvelous light," (1 Peter 2:9) henceforth and forever to be a child of the light and of the day. "You were once darkness, but now are you light in the Lord Walk as children of light." (Ephesians 5:8)

But the present pages have more especially to do with God Himself as the God of light. We are invited to consider, less the reflection and effects of God's light, than the Divine Fountain from which it flows.

[Octavius Winslow]

1 John 1:5 ... This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Black as Night, and As Hideous as Hell!

Oh, that blessed word all. It includes willful sins and unintentional sins, sins against gospel light, sins against the love of God, sins wantonly perpetrated, sins against man and against God, sins of body and of soul, sins of thought and word and deed, sins of every rank and character, sins as immense as the sea all, all are removed, no matter how many, or how vile they are!

What comfort there is here for every believer! However heinous your sins may be, there is a sin-offering which cleanses away every sin. However, you may have defiled yourselves, though you are as black as night, and as hideous as Hell yet there is power in the sin-atoning blood of the incarnate God to make you as white as newly fallen snow!

What a joy it is to think, not only has Christ put away my sin; but now for me, He is a sweet savor to God, and I am for His sake accepted; for His sake beloved; for His sake delighted in; for His sake precious unto God. The immaculate Christ has died, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God. Washed once in the fountain opened for sin and for impurity there shall remain upon you no trace of guilt!

[Charles H. Spurgeon]

Prove It!!

It is related that the famous French artist Gustave Dore was once wandering in the mountains of Switzerland, when some officials met him and demanded his passport. "I do not have it with me," he replied, "but my name is Gustave Dore." "Prove it, if you are," replied the officers, knowing who Dore was but not believing that this was he. Taking a piece of paper, the artist hastily sketched a group of peasants who were standing near and did it with such grace and skill that the officials exclaimed, "Enough, you are Dore!"

In the same way, the world cares little for a mere profession. We say we are Christians, and the challenge is, "Prove it!" If we are of Christ, then we must do the works of Christ, live the life of Christ, and show the spirit of Christ. The artist's skillful drawing proved his identity. Just so, we must prove that we are the followers of our Master by the love, the grace, the beauty, the holiness of our life. Religion is not merely a matter of creed and profession, or of church-going and public worship; it is far more a matter of daily life. It is not how we behave on Sundays, nor the kind of creed we hold, nor the devoutness of our worship it is the way we act at home, in school, in business, in society, in our associations with others.

It is vitally important that all who profess Christ shall manifest Christ's beauty in their life and character. It is not enough to preach the gospel in words alone; others must also read it in our daily life.

[J.R. Miller]

He Will Bruise His Darling Son!

What are we? We are only lumps of sin and dirt! But see the eternal love of God towards sinful men. His boundless love set His infinite wisdom to work how to save these sinful and sinning creatures from the burning pit! It pleased the Lord Himself to bruise His Son. He thrust the sword of justice into the heart of His own dear Son, that mercy might flow to the "objects of His mercy, whom He prepared in advance for glory." His dear Son must suffer, that they might be spared.

There was such love in God towards sinful men that many waters could not quench it. He did not spare His Son one iota. The Darling of Heaven cried out, "Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me!" (Matthew 26:39) But that we might go eternally free, and that God might look on us in justice and holiness, with smiles and kisses. He bruised His own Son. Jesus bore thousands of hells in His own sufferings in the garden and on the accursed tree; and the Father never withdrew the sword until He cried out, "It is finished!" "Behold what manner of love the father has bestowed upon us!" (1 John 3:1) to save us from a burning pit; to bring us to the heights of bliss! O the depths of God's love!

If He will pardon sin; if He will save a wretch, a rebel, a man damned by the law; if God will let His heart's love run out to save sinful man from what he deserves then He must part with the love of His heart, the joy of His soul His only begotten Son! But would He actually do that? Is His love so surprisingly great, boundless, full, and free that to save an enemy, a vile and a cursed sinner, He will bruise His darling Son?

[Francis Covell]

Isaiah 53:5-10 ... But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.  He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.  He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.  And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

Nominal Christians ...

It is to be feared that the great mass of nominal Christians is nothing but unconverted worldlings! "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not from the father, but is from the world!" (1 John 2:15-16)

The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life; that is, pleasure, and riches, and honor. These are the great objects of worldly ambition to which every godless heart is attached to! "If after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 2:20) The Apostle here takes for granted, that this effect will universally and invariably follow that all who know the adorable Savior will escape the pollutions of the world. There never was, nor ever will be, one exception to this truth.

All who savingly know Christ, will no longer supremely love the world, but escape from its enticements and pollutions. Yet it is to be feared that there are many professing Christians who have never been delivered from the pollutions of the world. Their desires, and hopes, and joys, and pursuits are all worldly. Be assured that you cannot love the world, and God also; for they are diametrically opposed to each other. "You cannot serve God and Mammon." (Matthew 6:24)

Know that while you love and desire and pursue earthly vanities then you have not yet truly devoted yourselves to the Lord Jesus. Whatever your situation or circumstances may be, God's view of worldliness is the same: "You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God! (James 4:4) "Remember Lot's wife!" (Luke 17:32)

Scripture paints the world, and all who love it, in darksome colors. O that all the votaries of gaiety, and fashion, and pleasure, would realize what Scripture compares them to: "Swine wallowing in the mire!" and "Dogs returning to their own vomit!" (Proverbs 26:11)

Yes, this is the feast to which your earthly friends invite you! Learn to view the world as God views it! Regard it as a country infected with the plague! Let your great concern be to get through it in safety.
