Lessons Learned Too Late!

Luke 16:19-31. Here is the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus.

Lazarus died and was carried up to Heaven. Chosen, redeemed and born of God--he entered into glory. "The rich man also died." What became of him? "In Hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torment!" 

 Our Lord here allows us to look beyond the grave. He allows us to look into Hell itself. He shows us the pains, feelings and desires of a damned man one who is forever shut up in Hell. Here are seven things that the rich man learned, but he learned them too late! He learned them in Hell! I pray that you will not learn them too late. 

1. Death does not end all. "If a man dies, shall he live again?" Indeed, we shall. We all have an immortal soul that will live on forever after our bodies are in the grave. Will you spend eternity in the bliss and glory of Heaven--or in the torments of the damned in Hell? 

2. There is a real place called "Hell." Hell is as real as the town in which you live. The same Inspired Book that tells us about Heaven and the eternal bliss of the redeemed, also tells us about Hell and the eternal misery of the damned. I do not know where it is, and I cannot imagine what it is, but Hell is a real place. The rich man found out too late, that Hell is not a myth. 

3. A holy God must and will punish sin. God is so inflexibly just and holy, that when the sin of His people was imputed to His own dear Son He poured out His infinite wrath upon Him! In the same way He who punished His Son for sin He will certainly punish you for your sin, if it is not removed by His Son. 

4. Hell is a place of endless torment. The rich man cried, "I am tormented in this flame!" Hell is a place of unfulfilled lust and desire a place of eternal mental, moral and physical agony. 

5. Christ is the only way of salvation. The rich man's riches, religion, and works, were of no value to him in Hell. Missing Christ, he lost all! 

6. Unless a man repents, he will surely perish. In Hell this man realized that without repentance, there is no salvation. (verse 30) 

7. No one can ever be saved without hearing and believing the gospel. (verses 28-31) Be wise now and believe the gospel. Trust Christ, lest you also perish forever under the wrath of God!

When a Lost Man Dies ...

When a lost man dies: his relatives scramble for his money; the worms scramble for his body; and the demons scramble for his soul! What a fearful and sobering picture this is! The world may dress death in velvet and flowers, but God reveals its true horror for the unregenerate soul. The instant a man without Christ breathes his last, everything he loved is torn from him. His money is left behind, becoming a point of contention and greed among his relatives. The body he once adorned and pampered, is claimed by corruption and decay. And his soul the most precious part of his being is cast into eternal Hell. 

The world's goods, its riches, its pleasures, its pomp, its fame what are all these without Jesus? They are a painted pageantry to go to Hell in! They are a mockery to an immortal spirit. They are like a mirage in the desert, deluding the traveler, but not yielding one substantial drop of joy. "I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind!" (Ecclesiastes 1:14) 

Yes! This poor world is a heap of chaff; the only enduring treasure is to be found in Jesus. If you neglect Him, you neglect all that is worth having. For the lost, death is not an escape it is the doorway to everlasting punishment. Jesus spoke more often of Hell than of Heaven, warning us with great compassion: "Fear Him who, after killing the body, has power to throw you into Hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him!" (Luke 12:5) 

The man who lives for himself and dies without Jesus, does not rest in peace. He awakens to eternal torment, where hope never dawns, and mercy is no longer offered. Dear reader, do not be deceived. Life is short! Death is certain! Eternity is near! 

A golden coffin will be a poor compensation for a damned soul!

Deceitfulness of Sin!

A deathbed is a great revealer. Some time ago, I was called to visit a lovely young woman on her deathbed. She had regularly attended the means of grace, often felt impressed under the Scriptures but never came to saving faith. She was suddenly seized with illness, which soon terminated fatally. On that sick bed, she saw things very differently to what she had done and deeply regretted the course she had pursued. Often on her dying pillow, she was heard to exclaim, "Oh the deceitfulness of sin! Oh, the deceitfulness of sin!" 

She now saw that it had deceived her and bitterly regretted that she had yielded to its fascinations. Reader! Sin is very deceitful. It never appears at first in its true colors but wears a mirthful garment to deceive. Beware of it, lest it deceive you. Many have never been undeceived until it was too late; the door of mercy was closed, and they were beyond the reach of salvation. 

JANE JONES was a lively, good-tempered, kind young woman. Her conduct was moral, and she stood well with her employers. She read her Bible, sometimes attended a place of worship and her case appeared very hopeful. But she was invited to a public dance. She hesitated about going. She was pressed and was assured there was no harm in it. She went. She was fascinated. She soon gave up reading her Bible. Then she neglected public worship and went out visiting friends on the Lord's Day. She acquired a fondness for dress, for mirthful company, for music, for parties in a word, for all that was frivolous and mirthful. But in the end, she was ruined. She lost her job and her character, her conscience became hardened, she could laugh at serious things and became a victim to the deceitfulness of sin. One step led on to another, until she perished in her own deceiving's, and became the victim of her own folly! Had she refused to go to the dance, had she kept to her Bible and the house of prayer she might have lived respected, and died happy. 

Young woman! Beware of the village dancing-room. It was the ruin of Jane Jones and has been the ruin of thousands beside!

SAMUEL SMITH was a sober, steady, and industrious young man. He promised well. In the Sunday school he had learned many useful lessons, and under a faithful minister became "almost a Christian." But he was urged to join a club which met at a tavern, and, from an exaggerated representation of its advantages at length did so. At first, he went, paid his money, drank his pint of beer, and returned home. At length he took a pipe of tobacco. Soon after, he remained to hear one song. Soon he became fond of the society of vain, mirthful, thoughtless young men and at times drank so much that could not walk straight when he went home. A craving for strong drink, mirthful company, and foolish jests was produced, and step by step he was led on until he squandered his property, destroyed his health, and ruined his soul!  Disease was generated by his bad habits his constitution was undermined, and he sank into a premature grave. He was another victim to "the deceitfulness of sin."

Young man! avoid the tavern as you would a house full of disease! Join no society or club which holds its meetings there. The ruin of thousands has been accelerated thereby. If you take one step in sin you will be tempted to take another, and another, until you are undone! Yielding to temptation, is like making a break in a huge dam the waters will soon become all-powerful and carry everything before them. If you begin you cannot stop when you will; for habits are soon formed but once formed, are not easily broken off! Hence that fearful text of Scripture, "Let the Ethiopian change his skin, and the leopard his spots then may you also do good, who are accustomed to do evil."

HENRY MAYNE was a kind-hearted, amiable lad, a good son, and a faithful employee. His conscience was tender; his conduct was consistent. His mother was proud of him, and his father used to say, "there was not a better lad in the town than our Henry!" He had just turned his eighteenth year when he was coaxed away one day to the races. There he was introduced into mirthful company, which proved a snare to him. He became selfish, and his temper was soon soured. He could not bear the restraints of home. He was now too much of a 'man' to be tied to his mother's apron string nor would he put up with the old man's lectures. If he earned money, he had a right to do what he pleased with it, and he would, too!  He left home, went to lodge with a loose young man, and was soon added to the number of those who are destroyed through "the deceitfulness of sin." Poor Henry! he might have been a respectable young man, a useful member of society, and a happy Christian but sin deceived him, and he died as he lived a slave to his passions, one of the dupes of Satan led captive by the devil at his will.

Reader! beware of yielding to temptation! Beware, oh beware, of taking the first step in the road to ruin! Seek grace from God in prayer, to enable you to live godly, righteously, and soberly in the present world. Keep, Oh keep eternity in view, for you must live forever in happiness or woe! Your eternal destiny is fixed by the course you pursue in time. There is a strait gate and a narrow way that leads to glory, and comparatively few go in there at: and there is a wide gate and a broad road that leads to destruction and multitudes, multitudes, go in there at! Strive, therefore, to enter in at the strait gate, and be sure you enter it by a living faith. It leads to the way of holiness; it conducts to the presence of God.

Do not be deceived by sin! Do not walk in the way of sinners. Young woman! avoid the dancing-room, it is one of the first steps to ruin! Young man! avoid the tavern, and the racecourse for there is Satan lies in wait to destroy. The best way to escape from all the traps and snares that Satan lays for you is to come to Jesus and be saved from sin and the wrath to come through him!

With Christ!

How marvelous is the transforming power of the religion of the Lord Jesus! Whatever it touches, it beautifies; and all that comes within its range receives a luster and a loveliness from the reflection of itself. Everything on which its light is cast, appears the very reverse of what it appeared before. Where there was darkness light springs into existence; where there were previous gloom brightness shines; and where there was sadness songs begin to abound. How true this is in reference to the heart. "The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked!" (Jeremiah 17:9.) 

Behold your heart in its natural sinful state can you imagine anything more devoid of anything that is lovely? Can you think of anything drearier to the view? 'Tis a wilderness, a wilderness overgrown with briars and with thorns, while these are interlaced with poisonous plants, and in and out among them, there creep reptile lusts and serpent sins. It is enough to make an angel weep to look at such a sight! But behold! God's hour of mercy touches that heart saving grace enters it. See now the contrast.

Instead of the thorn there is the fir tree; and instead of the briar the myrtle tree sends forth its sweet perfume; while the birds of praise carol as they rest in the branches of the trees of the Lord's right-hand planting; and the serpents are either destroyed, or else they hide themselves in their holes. The religion of Jesus has touched that heart and at its touch there has been a magic transformation; where dreariness and death reigned, there is now beauty, delight and joy.

Choose Life!!

If Anyone Does Not Love The Lord ...

If you do not love the Lord Jesus then you are on the way to judgment, and then to eternal condemnation. If you do not love the Lord Jesus, then you are going as fast as time can carry you away, away, away to the gloomy land where not a single ray of hope will ever pierce the midnight darkness. Away, away, away, to the place of eternal despair! 

If you do not love the Lord Jesus, then you are now in awful peril. You stand over the mouth of Hell upon a single plank, and that plank is rotten. You hang over the jaws of perdition by a slender thread, and the angel of justice is waiting to cut that thread in sunder! 

Oh, how dreadful to live and die in this cursed state! And then to wake up on the resurrection morning and see the King in His beauty on the throne, and to know that you are eternally cursed! You will cry to the rocks to hide you, and to the hills to cover you, for you are cursed! Then to be brought out before the great white throne resplendent in its holiness, and hear the fact announced so that all may know that you are eternally cursed! 

Ah, what will it be to see the bottomless pit open its mouth to devour you, and descending forever, to understand that you are not only cursed, but damned!

"Look unto Jesus!"

Dear fellow-sinners, 

If you take refuge by faith in this sacrifice of Emmanuel, you are saved and cannot come into condemnation. But if you despise and reject it, then sooner may heaven and earth pass away than that you should escape being in hell to all eternity for your sins! 

I rejoice to hear that some of you seem to have gotten a glimpse of the love of Jesus, and of the preciousness of His atoning blood. To such I would say remain at Calvary, be there sleeping and waking, at work or at play, living and dying. Gaze upon that great sight until your conscience enjoys perfect peace with God, until your heart is filled with Emmanuel's love, and your whole soul is transformed into His image, and becomes as a mirror, finely polished to reflect the rays of His grace and glory to all eternity! 

"Look unto Jesus!" is the whole of the gospel. Look and wonder, look and live, look and love, look and adore, look and admire, look and be blessed, look and be glorified, look eternally and your hearts will be filled with everlasting love, and your mouth with an unending hallelujah! But what can I say to those among you, who have heard of Jesus, and whose hearts are given to another to the world, to themselves, to a lust, to a passion, to an idol, to sin, to Satan! 

Ah! to hellfire you will go if the Lord, in infinite mercy, does not interpose for you! Children, young people, who have not yet come to Jesus realize that you are under the wrath of God and that every moment it is coming nearer and nearer to your poor souls! Awake, arise, flee without a moment's delay to Jesus, and take refuge below His atoning cross and enjoy now and to all eternity His free, infinite, and unchangeable love to perishing sinners! Shall I meet you in heaven or see you going away in your impenitence and unbelief to hell?

Swept Off

Dear Friend, 

We shall both very soon, I anticipate, be called away from seeing all things through a glass darkly to meeting God face to face and shall have to answer to Him for the deeds done in the body. 

We would certainly exhibit the most inordinate vanity, if we thought that the great mass of our fellowmen would be losers by our being swept off the great chessboard of this world. This board, indeed, is always so crowded that, with the exception of our attached relations and a few friends, the greater number of our neighbors will be glad to know that our being cleared away has left more elbowroom for them. 

Think how soon the world gets over the death of an eminent minister and let us be content that the place that knew us once, shall know us no more.

For God's Sake Do Not Trifle With Us!

When the Savior was on earth, He always taught upon vital matters. He never dealt with minutiae, but only with crucial facts. He had no time for trifles, but with essential truths. He never spoke of opinions or speculations, but of momentous verities. 

Yet how many preachers week after week, discourse about trivialities of no importance! I have sometimes, when hearing sermons, wished that the preacher would come to the point, and would deal with serious matters that really concerned our soul's welfare. What concern have dying men, with the thousand trivial opinions which are flitting around us? 

We have Heaven or Hell before us, and death within a stone's throw! For God's sake do not trifle with us but tell us the truth at once!

An Outlet and An Inlet!

Death is an outlet and an inlet to a holy man. Death is an eternal outlet to all his sins, to all his sorrows, to all his shame, to all his sufferings, to all his afflictions, to all his temptations, to all his oppressions, to all his confusions, and to all his vexations. Death is an eternal inlet into the clear, full, and constant enjoyment of God, the sweetest pleasures, the purest joys, the highest delights, the strongest comforts, and the most satisfying contentment's. 

Death is the funeral of all a holy man's sins and miseries and the perfection of all his joys, graces, and spiritual excellencies. Death is not the death of the man but the death of his sin. Death is a Christian's discharge from all trouble and misery. Death came in by sin and sin goes out by death. Death cures all diseases: the aching head, and the unbelieving heart; the diseased body, and the defiled soul. Death will cure the holy man of all natural and spiritual afflictions. 

Death is God's gentle usher to conduct us to Heaven! Death to a holy man, is nothing but the changing of his grace, into glory; his faith, into sight; his hope, into fruition; and his love, into eternal rapture! 

Oh, who would not go through death to Heaven, to eternal life, to immortality and glory! Death to a Christian, is a welcome guest, a happy friend, a joyful messenger!

The Dirty Lane!

Look upon your dying day as a gainful day. There is no gain compared to that which comes in by death. A Christian gets more by death, than he does by life. To be in Christ is very good, but to be with Christ is best of all, "I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far!" (Philippians 1:23) It was a mighty blessing for Christ to be with Paul on earth, but it was the top of blessings for Paul to be with Christ in Heaven!


Seriously consider these things: 
By death you shall gain incomparable crowns!
  a crown of life, ... Revelation 2:10, James 1:12
  a crown of righteousness, ... 2 Timothy 4:8
  an incorruptible crown ... 1 Corinthians 9:24-25
  a crown of glory ...   1 Peter 5:4
There are no crowns compared to these crowns!

By death you shall gain a glorious kingdom! "It is your Father's pleasure to give you a kingdom!" (Luke 12:32) We must put off the rags of mortality, that we may put on our robes of glory! There is no entering into paradise, but under the flaming sword of this angel, death, which stands at the gate.

Death is the dirty lane through which the saint passes to a kingdom, to great kingdom,
 to a glorious kingdom, to a peaceful kingdom, to an unshaken kingdom, to a lasting kingdom, yes, to an everlasting kingdom!

Death is the dark, short way, through which the saints pass to the marriage-supper of the Lamb!

When God Dwelt All Alone!

There was a time, if 'time' it could be called, when God dwelt all alone. There was no Heaven, where His glory is now particularly manifested. There was no earth to engage His attention. There were no angels to hymn His praises. There was no universe to be upheld by the word of His power. There was nothing, no one, but God; and that, not for a day, a year, or an age but "from all eternity." 

During eternity past, God was alone: self-contained, self-sufficient, self-satisfied, in need of nothing. Had a universe, had angels, had human beings been necessary to Him in any way they would have been called into existence from all eternity. 

The creating of them when He did, added nothing to God essentially. "I the Lord do not change" therefore His essential glory can be neither augmented nor diminished.

The Distinction Between the Righteous and the Wicked!

Malachi speaks not only to his contemporaries but to all generations, proclaiming the day when the Lord will make a clear distinction between the righteous and the wicked. This distinction is not according to mere human judgment, but of divine discernment. It is a separation wrought by the very hand of God, who sees into the depths of the human heart, and weighs our actions, our words, our thoughts, and our desires with perfect justice. 

The righteous, those who serve the Lord with steadfast devotion, shall stand as witnesses to His glory. Their lives are marked by sincere faith in Jesus, obedience to His commandments, humility before His majesty, and love for their fellow man. Though they may endure trials and tribulations in this earthly pilgrimage, their reward is sure. For the Lord, in His infinite mercy, will preserve them and exalt them in due time. 

But woe to the wicked those who reject the ways of the Lord and walk in the paths of disobedience! Their hearts are filled with pride, and their deeds with iniquity. They scoff at the precepts of God and mock the warnings of His prophets. Yet their laughter shall turn to lamentation, for the day of reckoning draws near. In that day, they shall be cast down into the abyss of darkness, where there is weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth. "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." (Matthew 25:46) 

Beloved, let us ponder these words of Malachi and take heed to our ways. Let us strive to walk in righteousness, knowing that our God is a God of justice, who will reward every man according to his deeds. May we be found faithful on that great and terrible day, when the righteous and the wicked shall be separated; and may we hear the blessed words, "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord!" (Matthew 25:21)

Our Aim!

Oh, brothers, let us live as we shall wish we had lived when life is over! Let us aim at a life which will outlast the fires which shall try every man's work! May we begin here a life worthy to be perpetuated in eternity!

Beliefs...

You are free to believe whatever you want to believe. 
 
But the Scriptures say ... 

 Life is short. 
 Death is real. 
 Hell is hot. 
 Eternity is long. 
 Only Jesus saves.



James 4:14 ... Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

A Worldly Spirit

Do not consider a worldly spirit as a little infirmity; as a natural, and therefore a pardonable weakness; as a trifling error, which will be overlooked for the sake of our many good qualities. A worldly spirit is, in fact the essence of our other faults, the temper that stands between us and our salvation, the spirit which is in direct opposition to the Spirit of God. 

Individual sins may more easily be cured, but a worldly spirit is the principle of all spiritual disease. A worldly spirit, where it is rooted and cherished, runs through the whole character, insinuates itself in all we say, and think, and do. It is this which makes us so dead in religion, so averse to spiritual things, so forgetful of God, so unmindful of eternity!

This is a Sad Sight!

One would think that the longer a person lived, the more willing he would be to leave his present earthly abode. But this is not always the case. Sometimes, alas! we see very aged people clinging to this world even more tightly than the young. We see them close to the grave's mouth and yet loving the riches, the pleasures, the trifles of this world with all their affections! 

Oh, this is a sad sight! It is sad to see a poor dying creature entering upon a solemn eternity with a heart glued to the world which he is leaving, and full of its concerns! 

When this is the case with a Christian, God often in mercy sends us some affliction. He withers our gourds which have grown up around us, that He may lead us to seek a truer and a safer shelter. He sees that we are too fond of these clay cottages of ours; so, He makes the walls to crumble, that we may be content to leave them at His call. 

Look at your growing infirmities, dear reader as so many mercies. Let them serve to remind you that you will not be here always, and that this world "is not your rest, because it is polluted!" Let your growing infirmities make you long for that happier land, where there shall be no more old age; where sorrow and sighing shall be unknown; and where "the inhabitant shall never say, I am sick." Oh, it is well for us that all is not health, and strength, and sunshine here else we would be even fonder than we are, of our present earthly home.
