Your Enemy!

Unconverted sinner! You are not only against God, but God Himself is against you! As there is no friend like Him so there is no enemy like Him. As much as heaven is above the earth, omnipotence above impotence so much more terrible is it to fall into the hands of the living God, than into the paws of bears and lions yes, furies or devils! 

God Himself will be your tormentor! Who or what shall deliver you out of His hands? Sinner, I think this would go like a dagger to your heart to know that God Himself is your enemy! 

Oh, where will you go? Where will you shelter yourself? The infinite God is engaged against you! He hates all workers of iniquity. Man, does not your heart tremble to think of your being an object of God's hatred? "As surely as I live, when I sharpen My flashing sword and begin to carry out justice, I will bring vengeance on My enemies and repay those who hate Me!" (Deuteronomy 32:40-41)  

The power of God is mounted like a mighty cannon against you! Sinner, the power of God's anger is against you and power and anger together make fearful work. There is no escaping His hands no breaking loose from His prison. Submit to mercy. Let not dust and stubble battle against the Almighty.

The Gospel in a Map

My child,

Behold, I give Myself to you, and all things with Myself.

I will be all to you that you can wish. I will be a FRIEND to you. My secrets shall be with you, and you shall have free access to Me, and liberty to pour out all your heart into My bosom. 

I am the everlasting Father, and I will be a FATHER to you. Behold, I receive you not as a servant, but as a son to abide in My house forever. Whatever love or care children may look for from their father, that you may expect from Me, and so much more since I am wiser, greater, and better than any earthly parents. If earthly fathers will give good things to their children, much more will I give to you. If such cannot forget their children, much less will I forget you. What would My children have? Your Father's heart, His house, His care, His ear, His bread, and His rod? These shall all be yours! 

You shall have My fatherly affection. My heart I share with you. My tenderest loves I bestow upon you. You shall have My fatherly compassion. As a father pities his children, so will I pity you. I will consider your frame, and not be extreme to mark what is done amiss by you, but will cover all with the mantle of My pitying love. I will be your Comforter in your solitude, your Counselor in your distress. 

I will be a PHYSICIAN to you. I will heal your backslidings and cure all your diseases. Fear not, for never did a soul miscarry that left itself in My hands, and would follow My prescriptions. 

I will be a SHEPHERD to you. Do not be afraid of evil tidings, for I am with you. My rod and My staff shall comfort you. You shall not lack, for I will feed you; you shall not wander or be lost, for I will restore you. I will cause you to lie down in green pastures, and will lead you beside the still waters. I will gather you with My arm, carry you in My bosom, and will lead you softly. I will bind up that which was broken, and strengthen you when sick. I will watch over My flock by night. My own eyes shall keep a perpetual watch by night and by day. The Keeper of Israel never slumbers nor sleeps, nor withdraws His eyes from the righteous. I will guide you with My eye. I will never trust you out of My sight. 

I will be a HUSBAND to you. In loving-kindness and mercy I will betroth you unto Myself forever. I will embrace your interest, and will be as one with you, and you with Me. You shall be for Me and not for another; and I also will be for you. Though I found you as a helpless infant, exposed in its own blood, all your unworthiness did not discourage Me. Lo, I have looked upon you, and put My loveliness upon you. Moreover, I swear unto you, and enter into covenant with you, and you shall be Mine. Behold, I do here solemnly, in My marriage covenant, give away Myself to you, and with Myself all things. I will be an everlasting portion to you. Now lift up your eyes to the east, to the west, to the north, and to the south. Have you not a worthy portion, a goodly heritage? 

Can you fathom your riches or count your own happiness? Can you grasp immensity, reach omnipotence, or comprehend eternity? All this is yours! I will set open all My treasures to you, and will keep back nothing from you. 

I will be a never failing fountain of joy, peace, and bliss unto you! I will be your God, your Father, and your Friend as long as I have any being. I have made My everlasting choice in electing you. Fear not, for the eternal God is your refuge, and underneath you are the everlasting arms. My unsearchable riches shall be yours. Though all should forsake you, yet I will never forsake you! 

I am your rock and your fortress, your deliverer, your strength, the horn of your salvation, and your high tower. 

I am God Almighty, your almighty Protector, your almighty Benefactor! My fullness is your treasure. My house is your home. You may come as freely to My store as to your own cupboard. You may have your hand as freely in My treasures as in your own purses. You cannot ask too much; you cannot look for too much from Me. I will give you (or will be Myself to you instead of) all comforts. You shall have children, or I will be better to you than ten children. You shall have riches, or I will be more to you than all riches. 

Can you put out the lamp of heaven, or empty the boundless ocean with your hands? Why, the sun shall be dark and the sea dry before the Father of lights, the Fountain of mercies shall be exhausted. My infiniteness shall be the extent of your inheritance! I am your inheritance, which no line can measure, no arithmetic can compute, and no surveyor can describe. 

But all this is but a taste of what I have prepared! 

You must have but smiles and hints now, and be content with glimpses and glances here on earth. But you shall be shortly taken up into your Father's bosom and live forever in the fullest views of His glory!

The day of your death, shall be the birthday of your glories!

Lay Your Ear to The Pit

O unbeliever! Look down into the bottomless pit! Do you see how the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever? What  do you think of those chains of darkness? Can you be content to burn for eternity?  Do you see how the worm gnaws, how the fire rages?  Do you see that gulf of perdition? Will you take up your habitation there?

O lay your ear to the door of Hell!  Do you hear the curses and blasphemies, the weeping and wailings? How they lament their follies and curse themselves! How they roar and gnash their teeth!  How deep their groans! How inconceivable their miseries!

O how fearful would the cry be if God would take the covering off the mouth of Hell, and let the cry of the damned ascend in all its terror among men!  And of their moans and miseries, this is the piercing, killing emphasis and theme, "Forever! forever!"

As God lives, you are but a few hours away from all this misery unless you be converted! If there is anything that may be called madness and folly, and anything that may be counted absurd, brutish, and unreasonable, it is this to go on in your unconverted state until God throws you into Hell! (Luke 12:5)

O sinners, see what a God you have to deal with. If you will but turn, "He will have compassion on you; He will subdue your iniquities, and cast all your sins into the depths of the sea!"

It Opens The Eye of The Mind

Conversion is a deep work, a heart work. It makes a new man in a new world! It extends to the whole man to the mind, to the affections, to the motions of the whole life. Conversion turns the balance of the judgment, so that God and His glory outweigh all carnal and worldly interests. It opens the eye of the mind, and makes the scales of its native ignorance fall off, and turns men from darkness to light.

The man who before saw no danger in his condition, now concludes himself lost and forever undone except renewed by divine grace. He who formerly thought there was little hurt in sin, now comes to see it to be the chief of evils! He sees the stupidity, the deformity and the filthiness of sin; so that he is affrighted by it, loathes it, dreads it, flees from it, and even abhors himself for it!

He who could see little sin in himself, and could find no matter for confession now sees the rottenness of his heart and the desperate and deep pollution of his whole nature. He cries, "Unclean! Unclean! Lord, purge me with hyssop, wash me thoroughly, create in me a clean heart!" He sees himself altogether filthy, corrupt in both root and branch. He writes 'unclean' upon all his supposed virtues and good works. He discovers the filthy corners that he was never aware of, and sees the blasphemy, and murder, and adultery, that is in his heart, of which before he was ignorant.

His hatred boils and his anger burns against sin. He has no patience with himself; he calls himself 'fool' and 'beast'; and thinks any name too good for himself, when his indignation is stirred up against sin. He could once wallow in it with much pleasure; now he loathes the thought of returning to it as much as of licking up the filthiest vomit!

Hitherto he saw no form nor loveliness in Christ, no beauty that he should desire Him; but now he finds that Jesus is the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl of great price which he is willing to sell all to obtain.

With A Rope Around My Neck

What misery have my sins brought upon me! Oh, what miserable state I am in! Sold under sin, cast out of God's favor, accursed from the Lord, cursed in my body, cursed in my soul, cursed in all that I have. My sins are unpardoned, and my soul is within a step of death!

Alas! What shall I do?  Where shall I go? Which way shall I look? God is frowning on me from above, hell is gaping for me beneath,  conscience is smiting me within, temptations and dangers are surrounding me without.

Oh, where shall I fly?  What place can hide me from Omniscience? What power can secure me from Omnipotence?  Alas, what shall I do?  Shall I go on in my sinful ways? Why then, certain damnation will be my end!   Shall I be so besotted and mad as to go and sell my soul to the flames for a little ale or a little ease; for a little pleasure or gain or comfort to my flesh?

Shall I linger any longer in this wretched state? No, If I tarry here I shall be miserable forever!  What then, is there no help?  Is there no hope? Is there any remedy for such woeful misery?  Is there any mercy after such provoking iniquity?

Lord Jesus, I come to You with the rope around my neck! I am worthy to die and to be damned. Take me for Yourself forever. I give myself to You, I come to You, as the only way to the Father, as the only Mediator. I have destroyed myself but in You is my help. Save, Lord or else I perish!

Too long have I served the world; too long have I hearkened to Satan; but now I renounce them all, and will be ruled by Your dictates and directions, and guided by Your counsel.
