Unsearchable Riches

In books I converse with men; in the Bible I converse with God. The more I read, the more I long to read. The Scripture is always new, always instructing, always delightful. The value of the Bible is inestimable. It is not only a perfect map of the spiritual world; but the believer surveying its riches and beauties and pleasures, has a good warrant to say, "All these are mine, for God Himself is mine!" God has spared me to read through His Word once more. 

Oh, what a treasure what unsearchable riches there are in this golden mine! I have never dug deeper, nor found more precious jewels than upon this last perusal. Indeed, upon every reading of the Bible it grows more precious to me, as it has become the conveyance of the unsearchable riches of Christ to me. It is our duty to read and meditate on the Word, but we should always do it with the fixed dependence of our hearts upon His divine teaching. Without meditation, the Word itself will profit us nothing. 

The Word of God can be made useful to us, only by the enlightening of the Spirit of God. It is by continual dependence on the teaching of the Spirit, that we come to find its value and to taste its pleasures. For it then opens a new world to us a spiritual and eternal world. Thanks be to Him who revealed His Word to me, who opened my eyes to see wondrous things out of His Word, who often made me look up and say, "Oh, how sweet are Your Words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" 

God has made His Word very precious to me. My love for it has grown much in taste and value. In taste, it is sweeter than honey. In value, it is more precious than gold, yes, than much fine gold! As I dig deeper, the mine becomes richer, and the treasures of grace are greatly enhanced by their being the pledges of glory. The great end and design of the Scripture is to conform us to itself. When the Word is understood and believed and lived upon God makes it the means of conforming the whole man to it. It is so assimilating that every tint is to be seen upon him.

It cannot be said of any other book, that it is perfect and pure; but of the Bible we can assuredly declare that all wisdom is gathered up in it, without a particle of folly. This is the judge that ends the strife, where wit and reason fail. This is the Book untainted by any error; but is pure, unalloyed, perfect truth.

Incomparable Book!

The whole of Scripture is but one entire love letter, dispatched from the Lord Christ to His beloved spouse!

Oh! the mysteries, the excellencies, the glories which are in this incomparable book! There are none so useful, none so needful, none so delightful, none so necessary to make you happy and to keep you happy as this!

Ah! the Word of the Lord is a light to guide you, a counselor to counsel you, a comforter to comfort you, a staff to support you, a sword to defend you, a physician to cure you!

The Word is a mine to enrich you, a robe to clothe you, a crown to crown you, bread to strengthen you, wine to cheer you, a honeycomb to feast you, music to delight you, a paradise to entertain you!

Oh! therefore, before all and above all: search the Scripture, study the Scripture, meditate on the Scripture, delight in the Scripture, treasure up the Scripture!

There is no wisdom like Scripture wisdom, no knowledge like Scripture knowledge, no experience like Scripture experience, no comforts like Scripture comforts, no delights like Scripture delights, no convictions like Scripture convictions, no conversion like Scripture conversion!

I exhort you to a speedy, serious, diligent, and constant study of the Scripture. Ah! you do not know how soon your blind minds may be enlightened, your hard hearts may be softened, your proud spirits may be humbled, your sinful natures may be changed, your defiled consciences may be purged, your distempered affections may be regulated, and your poor souls may be saved by searching into the Scriptures, by reading the Scripture, and by pondering upon the Scripture.

Ah! if you do not in good earnest, give yourself up to the reading, to the studying, to the pondering, to the believing, to the practicing, to the applying, and to the living up to the Scripture: Satan will be too hard for you, the world will be too hard for you, your lusts will be too hard for you, temptations will be too hard for you, deceivers will be too hard for you, and in the end you will be miserable!

An Anvil ...

The Scriptures contain: the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of lost sinners, and the happiness of believers.

Christians must depend upon God's Word as their only creed. They do not add to it anything whatever no, not a sentence or a thought. Those have greatly erred, who look upon anything as the authoritative standard of belief, but God's own Word. The Christian is not bound to any beliefs, but that which God Himself has revealed in His Word.

I have nothing to do with human creeds as the standard of my beliefs. The only point I have to do with is this:  What does God say?  What does His Word say?

Within the covers of the Bible, you find all theology. Nothing outside of this Book is binding on a Christian man as doctrine, in the least degree whatever. The Bible and the Bible alone is the creed of Christians. The Word of God is the anvil upon which the opinions of men are smashed.

We yield implicit faith to all that He has revealed, and to nothing else. A true church of God will say, "The Word of the Lord is to us, our infallible source of doctrine, and that alone."

The Bible alone is the Christian's chart, compass, map, and guide. He who would make progress in the heavenly voyage, must sail by this divine chart. The more you read the Bible, and the more you meditate upon it; the more you will be astonished with it.

Ocean of Life!

The Psalmist deposited the precepts and promises of God in his heart and proved their value and efficacy to preserve him from sin, to comfort him in trouble, and to cheer him in a dying hour.

Just so, Christians must "let the Word of Christ dwell in them richly, in all wisdom." (Colossians 3:16) This will preserve them from sin and make them wise unto salvation.

The Word must be deposited in our hearts and woven into our natures by carefully reading and meditating upon it. "Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it." (Joshua 1:8)

The Word is the perpetual standard of all moral excellence. All its precepts tend to purity. Its doctrines present the most powerful motives against sin.

When the Christian looks at the sufferings and death of the Redeemer in His intense agony, in His bloody sweat, in His transfixing on the cruel cross, in the desertion of His Father, in the endurance of the penalty of sin, then he sees in all these unparalleled sorrows, "the exceeding sinfulness of sin!"

Why is he redeemed? "Christ gave Himself for us--to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for Himself a people that are His very own, eager to do what is good!" (Titus 2:14)

Why is he regenerated? "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Why is he adopted into God's family but to bear the image of Him who adopts.

What is the tendency of all the doctrines of grace which he has received? "For the grace of God teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age!" (Titus 2:11-12)

Why is he preserved? "May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ!" (1 Thessalonians 5:23) "But now He has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation!" (Colossians 1:22)

Above all, when he contemplates the character of his Savior His ardent love, His ineffable meekness, His profound humility, and his perfect obedience, then he perceives such a bright constellation of virtues, that he is dazzled by their splendor, and longs and prays to be impressed with the image and likeness of Jesus.

Thus, the Word of God is hidden in his heart as his counselor, as his guide, as his pattern!

The Word of God is the Christian's compass and chart, by which he is steered safely over the tempestuous ocean of life!

Christ in the Old Testament

The Holy Spirit here reminds us that the message of the Old Testament is the same as that of the New: Christ crucified! The Bible, the Word of God, is one; and its message is one the gospel of Christ! Christ is the sum and substance of the Old Testament! To Him, the earliest promises pointed in the days of Adam, Enoch, and Noah, and Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

To Him, every sacrifice pointed in the ceremonial worship appointed at Mount Sinai. Of Him every high priest was a type, every part of the tabernacle was a shadow, and every judge and deliverer of Israel was a picture! If we read only that which was written by Moses in the books of the law, we would see Christ everywhere! 

Jesus is the Seed of the woman, who would break the serpent's head. He is the Seed of Abraham, in whom all nations would be blessed. He is the great Prophet like Moses, who would teach His redeemed people. Not only is Christ crucified the message of Moses, but He is also the message of all the prophets. When Philip described Christ to Nathanael, he said, "We have found the One who Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote, "Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph!" (John 1:45) 

All the law and all the prophets spoke of Him! They wrote of his birth through a virgin's womb, and the place of his birth, Bethlehem. The prophets spoke of the Savior's sufferings and the glory that would follow. And they wrote about many things relating to His person, offices, and work as Jehovah's righteous servant. They described Him plainly as the King of the house of David, who came to be David's Lord, as well as David's son. 

Jesus is the Lamb foretold by Isaiah, the righteous Branch mentioned by Jeremiah, the true Shepherd described by Ezekiel, the Messenger of the Covenant promised by Malachi, and the Messiah who, according to Daniel, was to be cut off, not for Himself, but for His people! Do we find it difficult to see Christ in the Old Testament? It is our spiritual blindness and ignorance that is to blame. The eyes of our understanding need to be enlightened. The veil needs to be taken away. 

Let us pray as we open the Scriptures: "O Spirit of God, open this Book to my heart and open my heart to this Book. Take the things of Christ written upon these pages and show them to me!" The whole book of God is about our Lord Jesus Christ and His glorious accomplishments as our God-man Mediator!

"The Bible"

The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. 

Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its stories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. 

It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler's map, the pilgrim's staff, the pilot's compass, the soldier's sword, and the Christian's charter. 

Here, Paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the gates of Hell disclosed. Christ is its grand subject, our good the design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. 

Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, health to the soul, and a river of pleasure! It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the greatest labor, and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents!

Commenting Upon the Bible

Chrysostom compares the Scripture to a garden every truth is a fragrant flower which we should wear, not on our bosom, but in our heart! David counted the Word "sweeter than honey and the honeycomb". There is that in Scripture which may breed delight. It shows us the way to riches, Deuteronomy 28:8, Proverbs 3:30; to long life, Psalm 34:42; to a Kingdom, Hebrews 12:28. 

Well then may we count those the sweetest hours, which are spent in reading the holy Scriptures. Well may we say with the prophet, "Your words were found, and I ate them. Your words became a delight to me and the joy of my heart!" (Jeremiah 15:16) Conform to Scripture. Let us lead Scripture lives. 

Oh, that the Bible might be seen printed in our lives! Do what the Word commands. Obedience is an excellent way of commenting upon the Bible. "Teach me Your way, O Lord, and I will walk in Your truth." (Psalm 86:11) Let the Word be the sundial by which you set your life. What are we the better for having the Scripture, if we do not direct all our speech and actions according to it? What are we the better for the rule of the Word, if we do not make use of it, and regulate our lives by it? What a dishonor is it to religion, for men to live in contradiction to Scripture! The Word is called a "light to our feet".  (Psalm 119:105) It is not only a light to our eyes to mend our sight but to our feet to mend our walk. 

Oh, let us lead Bible lives! Be thankful to God for the Scriptures. What a mercy is it that God has not only acquainted us what His will is, but that He has made it known by writing! The Scripture is our polestar to direct us to Heaven, it shows us every step we are to take. When we go wrong it instructs us; when we go right it comforts us. Adore God's distinguishing grace, if you have felt the power and authority of the Word upon your conscience if you can say as David, "Your Word has quickened me." (Psalm 119:50)

Christian, bless God that He has not only given you His Word to be a rule of holiness but His grace to be a principle of holiness. Bless God that He has not only written His Word, but sealed it upon your heart, and made it effectual. Can you say it is of divine inspiration, because you have felt it to be of lively operation? 

Oh, free grace! That God should send out His Word and heal you. That He should heal you, and not others! That the same Scripture which to them is a dead letter, should be to you a savor of life!

The Bible!!

The Bible is the richest treasure of the world! Without it, the palace is a dark blank. With it, the poor cottage sparkles with celestial light. It is the transcript of God's heart. It tells what human reason is too weak to find. It is pure truth without one shadow of error. It gives knowledge on all things needful for time and for eternity. It is a safe guide through life's entangled path. 

It is a compass through shoals and rocks; amid winds and waves; to Heaven's eternal rest! The wise man is ignorant without it. The peasant learns from it, salvation's road. 

It is a solace for every hour. It is a companion always ready to converse. It cheers when other comforts fail. It is arrayed in every charm for the intellect. It never wearies. It is always fresh. Its oldest truths cannot grow old. Its readers become more wise and more holy. 

Other books may puzzle and corrupt. The Bible is from Heaven and leads to Heaven. It enters the heart with purifying grace. The more you search the Bible the more your minds will wonder, and your hearts will love. Read it as literally true. Then no human philosophy will beguile you. Ponder its characters. You will find on them the intrinsic stamp of truth.

The One, Precious, All Absorbing Theme!

The Word of God must ever be transcendently precious to the believer. The Bible is, from its commencement to its close, a record of the Lord Jesus. Around Him the divine and glorious Word centers; all its wondrous types, prophecies and facts gather. His Promise and Foreshadowing, His holy Incarnation, Nativity and Baptism, His Obedience and Passion, His Death, Burial and Resurrection, His Ascension to Heaven, His Second coming to judge the world are the grand and touching, the sublime and tender, the priceless and precious truths interwoven with the whole texture of the Bible, to which the Two Witnesses of Revelation, the Old and the New Testaments bear their harmonious and solemn testimony. 

Beloved, let this be the one and chief object in your study of the Bible the knowledge of Jesus! The Bible is not a history, a book of science or a poem it is a record of Christ. Study it to know more of Him His nature, His love, His work. With the magnanimous Paul, "count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus your Lord." (Philippians 3:8) Then will God's Word become increasingly precious to your soul, and its truths unfold. 

In every page you will: trace the history of Jesus, see the glory of Jesus, admire the work of Jesus, learn the love of Jesus, and hear the voice of Jesus! The whole volume will be redolent of His name, and luminous with His beauty! Oh, what is the Bible to us apart from its revelation of a Savior! Is there not great danger of studying it merely intellectually and scientifically, of reveling among its literary beauties and its grandeur blind to its true value, and without any desire to know that precious Savior who died for sinners, that Divine Redeemer who purchased the ransom of His Church with His own blood; that Friend who loves us; that Brother who sympathizes with us, that enthroned High Priest who intercedes for us within the veil? 

Do we study the "Word of Christ" spiritually and honestly as those whose souls hunger and thirst for this, the bread and water of life? Do we search it diligently and earnestly as for hidden treasure, treasure beyond all prices? Can we say with David, "O how love I Your law! It is my meditation all the day!" (Psalm 119:97) Do we: read it with a child-like mind, receive it with a believing heart, bow to its teaching with reverence of soul, and receive its decisions in all questions of faith and practice as decisive and ultimate? In a word, do we search the Scriptures humbly, prayerfully, depending upon the guidance of the Spirit to find Jesus in them? 

Of these Scriptures He is the Alpha and the Omega, the substance, the sweetness, the glory, the one, precious, all absorbing theme! Yes, Lord! Your word is precious to our souls, because it reveals to us Your glory, and tells us of Your love!

Human Guidance

We have need to be on our watch against the powerful influence of spiritual mentors lest, fascinated by the fame of some popular leader, we become the willing dupes of a childish superstition, or the blind followers of a fatal error. 

Do not take your views of Divine truth from man; draw them primarily from God's Word. Do not study the Bible through your theological system but let your system be taken from, and faithfully weighed with, the Bible. Our theological system must not be allowed to give its complexion to, or to be the interpreter of, revealed truth. But on the contrary, God's Word is to suggest and mold and tint all our thoughts and opinions and systems. 

We must not set the sun by our watch, but our watch by the sun. In other words, we must not attempt to make God's Word dovetail with our creed, but must test every doctrine we hold, every opinion we receive, every principle we maintain, the hope we cherish by the unerring standard of revealed truth! This will give a Divine and proper complexion to our views. 

If we receive the light of the sun through a tinted lens, the light will necessarily reflect the hue of the medium through which it passes. So, if we receive the light of God's Word through any theological system whatever it will necessarily reflect the error and imperfection, if such there be, of that system. And thus, we shall fail to receive the teaching of God as it flows pure and simple from His Word as light flows from the sun, and as streams from the fountain. 

The Bible is our rule of faith, and our only and ultimate appeal. By the law and the testimony let every doctrine, and system, and hope for eternity be tried! Do not be, then, carried away by the learning, the influence, or even the piety attaching to a popular name. Allow no human leader the mastery of your mind and conscience. Yield yourself meekly and obediently to the authority and teaching of Christ accepting human guidance only so far as it comes with a "thus says the Lord" as its divine endorsement. 

Our only safeguard in a matter of such infinite moment as our future wellbeing, is God's pure Word, our only secure place, the feet of the Savior. Sitting there as His lowly disciple, the Holy Spirit will lead our minds into the truth, even "the truth as it is in Jesus" as it emanates from Jesus, as it speaks of Jesus, as it strengthens our faith in, and inspires our love to, Jesus; and as it prepares us to go and be with Jesus forever!

Where is Christ in Your Theological System?

Take this Book and distill it into one word and that one word will be JESUS! The Bible itself, is but the body of Christ, and we may look upon all its pages as the swaddling bands of the infant Savior for if we unroll the Scripture, we come upon Jesus Christ Himself. 

Where is Christ in your theological system? He Himself is the Doctor and Doctrine, the Revealer and Revelation, the Illuminator and the Light of men. He is exalted in every word of truth, because He is its sum and substance. He sits above the gospel, like a prince on His own throne. Doctrine is most precious, when we see it distilling from His lips and embodied in His person. Sermons are only valuable, in proportion as they speak of Him and point to Him!

What a Treasure.

What a treasure is the Word of God! Here we have: Light, to dissipate our darkness. Truth, to guide us amid the mazes of error. Consolations, to gladden us in a world of misery. The Bible is the Revelation of our Father's love; the Expression of Jehovah's grace to sinners; the Depository of heavenly blessings; the Charter of our highest privileges; the Religion of true Christians; the Glory of our churches; the poor man's Friend. 

Everything sublime in conception, and tender in expression is to be found in the sacred Scriptures. The Eternal Jehovah has there revealed Himself as clothed with majesty and honor; glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders; of purer eyes than to behold iniquity; in whose sight the heavens are not clean. In the sacred Scriptures, 

He has manifested His glory as mighty to save, forgiving iniquity transgression and sin. In that blessed volume, Mercy is seen to arrest the arm of Justice and all the tenderness of the Father is displayed in the person of the adorable Son. Love breathes throughout its sacred pages!

The Diamond in That Ring!

The whole of Scripture is but one entire love-letter, all written in golden letters, dispatched from the Lord Christ to His beloved spouse on earth. In it, there is so much to be read of the love of Christ, the heart of Christ, the kindness of Christ, the grace of Christ, and the glory of Christ, that a holy heart cannot but love, and embrace, and endeavor to conform to every line. 

The whole Word of God is a field and Christ is the treasure which is hidden in that field! The whole Word of God is a ring of gold and Christ is the diamond in that ring!

Modern Science and The Bible Disagree

What if science, as at present understood, and the Bible, do not agree? Shall we be troubled thereat? I think not. I rejoice to know that what is termed modern science and the Bible do not agree. I would be sorry if they did agree! Modern science is changeable, the Bible is unchangeable! The science of today is not the science of last year and will not be the science of the next year. The Bible of today, is the Bible of all the Christian centuries; and will be a thousand years hence, just what it was nearly eighteen hundred years ago, when the canon of Scripture was closed! 

Mark the changes which have taken place along the whole line of sciences since the beginning of this nineteenth century. What a catastrophe then would it have been, had it been proved that the Bible and science as known at the beginning of this century, fully agreed; that all the assertions of the Bible could be squared with the facts of science as then understood! The great tidal waves of science which have rolled over the world since, would have left the Bible stranded and ruined! And just so now, could it be made clear today that every truth in the Bible accords with the received theories of science what would become of the Bible fifty years hence, when science will have moved on with even more rapid strides, and left behind more wrecks of theories and more stranded speculations? 

In the meanwhile, the Bible stands still in the solitary grandeur of its own perfection! It waits, as the ages roll on, for confirmation and acceptance. It was said by one of old, "God is patient, because He is eternal;" and the Bible, as the book of the God of truth, has this attribute of its divine Author. Its strength is to sit still. It does not go out hastily to meet a half-formed science, and embrace it as an ally, lest it should turn into a foe. It calmly tarries in the consciousness of its own truth, as the advances of science come nearer and nearer; and every advance of true science does bring it nearer to the Bible. The opposition to that Bible, comes only from a class whose utterances, Paul has justly characterized as "the profane and vain babblings and oppositions of science falsely so called." (1 Timothy 6:20) 

 These differences between science and Scripture cannot be settled, because science is not settled. And science will never be settled, so long as there is an undiscovered fact in nature, or an inquiring mind in man!
