An Immense Ocean ...

Dear friend,

May Jesus be yours-all that He is, and all that He has. Then you will be as rich as an archangel! May He captivate you more with His infinite beauty and enable you to live more blessedly upon His infinite fullness, that He may keep His royal court in your soul!

The more you are acquainted with Him, the more you will grow in love to Him; for He is altogether lovely, an immense ocean of everlasting love! The loveliness of the whole world is but a drop compared to His immeasurable love. What must Heaven be, where His love is to be fully manifested and enjoyed forever! There we shall see Him!

Oh, for that day! But even along our pilgrim way, He walks with us and makes our hearts burn within us. These sweet foretastes of His love draw us on and whet our appetite for Heaven. A few more of these foretastes, and we shall get to the fountainhead and drink rivers of pleasure forevermore!

To His precious dear heart's love, I commend you and yours, and am for His sake your friend and servant,

William Romaine

Divine Love!!

The greatest treasure of all of God's unsearchable riches, was His only begotten Son. God took Jesus from His bosom, where He had forever dwelt serenely; and sent Him to earth, that He might live and die to save rebellious sinners.

The death of Jesus manifests the solemnity of God's dealings with sin and is fitted to bow the soul in lowliest humility before Him. If the evil of sin is seen in the tremendous price required to atone for it, then sin must be evil beyond thought for nothing less than the bloody death of the Son of God could remedy it.

In the presence of the sin-atoning sacrifice of Jesus on Calvary, sin must be an evil so great that it is not possible to exaggerate its horrors. Oh, sinful men, your transgressions are horrendous indeed, since they can only be expiated by such a sacrifice! Oh, reprehensible creatures, you required a dying God to save you!

The sin-atoning death of Jesus displayed the supreme love of God to heinous men. He gave up the darling of His heart, to save wicked sinners. God has manifested His love in the death of His beloved Son, in a way which must have astonished every inhabitant of Heaven; and it ought to ravish every man of this lower globe.

Truly, the blood of Jesus is the ruby gem of the ring of divine love! Brethren, we have but a faint idea of how much the Lord our God loves us. "God commends His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)

There was nothing lovable in us; we were enemies to God, polluted and polluting. There was everything in us that was obnoxious to the holy mind of God. And yet, because of the riches of His grace and the supremacy of His mercy. He loved us to the uttermost.

Lament that you should be guilty of such a horrible thing, that even God's own spotless Son must suffer, bleed, and die; before our sin, with all its scarlet dye, could be washed out.

Our Constant Habit!!

The believer must ever conduct himself with kindness and love towards the wicked. Yet there is in many religious professors, almost the same acrimony against the ungodly world as there is in the ungodly world against them!

How unfitting this is! For if there is any difference between us and others it is God alone who has made us to differ! We must set the Lord Jesus Christ ever before us, and endeavor to drink into His spirit, and to walk in His steps. This must be our constant habit.

[Charles H. Spurgeon]

Romans 12:19-21 ... Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

Matthew 5:43-45 ... Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Luke 6:27-29 ... But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also. ❤

Matchless Love!!

Sit down in astonishment at this matchless love of Jesus!

Oh! what is in us, that should cause the Lord to save us? We were all equal in sin and misery; nay, doubtless, we have actually out-sinned thousands, to whom this precious salvation is denied.

Oh! we were once poor wretches sitting upon the ash-heap; yes, wallowing in our blood; and yet behold, the King of kings, the Lord of lords, has so far abounded in His love, as to bestow Himself, His Spirit, His saving grace, and all the jewels of His royal crown, upon us!

Oh! what heart can conceive, what tongue can express, this matchless love! Says Jesus: "I will be yours forever, and My Spirit shall be yours forever, and My grace shall be yours forever, and My glory shall be yours forever, and My righteousness shall be yours forever! All that I am, and all that I have shall be yours forever!"

Oh, what incomparable love is this!

Oh! what a precious Jesus is this!

[Thomas Brooks]

Romans 5:6-8 ... For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

1 John 3:1 ... Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

John 3:16 ...  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. ❤

Love is Best Understood Through the Cross

The cross was certainly the most visible act of God’s love towards us. It was also planned. It wasn’t an accident. I think sometimes people think that Jesus was this man on earth and he was kind of like a leaf on a river and got carried to and from and somehow ended up on the cross, got lucky and paid for everyone’s sin, or maybe unlucky, depending on how you look at that. That’s not actually what it was. Yes, people made choices and decisions that resulted in Christ going to the cross, but the decision made before the world was created was that Christ would go to the cross to pay for sin, so what we see is this act of love on the cross was intentional. It was planned.

Also though, the cross was about God, primarily. We often think of the cross as being about us. Now, we are beneficiaries of the work that was done there, but the cross, first and foremost, was God glorifying himself in the creation of a people for himself, doing something only he could do. So, when we want to understand love let’s understand that its planned, it’s about God, but it’s also about people. It’s about us. The cross is the way in which God shows his love for us, so love has a God-facing component, it often has a man- or woman-facing component, but the cross was also sacrificial. It was undeserved and costly.

The last point is that it was an objective good. God said the cross was good. God said the cross accomplished his plan, so love is something that has a right answer. It has a God-grounded right answer, so the things we can learn just briefly by looking at the cross: Love is planned, love is about God, love is about man, love is sacrificial, and there is a right answer to this question, but love is best understood through the cross.

Praise For Redeeming Love!!

He loved us!  Jesus loved us! We could not have believed it had it not been written in the Word of God. For why should He have loved us? There was nothing good in us, nothing worthy of His love. We hated Him yet He loved us! The Bible says so. It is true; therefore, astonishing yet true. Sinners as we were, sinners as we are yet Jesus loved us. And if now, through grace, we love Him it is "because He first loved us." (1 John 4:19)

He loved us so much, that He forgave and washed us from all our sins. It was the one thing without which we could never have known happiness nay, without it we must have been lost forever. He might have done a thousand other things for us, but if He had left this thing undone, all the rest would have been in vain. But He did not leave it undone. Because He loved us, He "washed us from our sins in His own blood." Yes, in His own blood!  There was nothing else that could wash away so deep a stain nothing else that could pay our debt and save our souls. Silver and gold could not redeem us (1 Peter 1:18); the blood of goats and calves could not atone for our sins. (Hebrews 9:12)

It must be His own blood the precious blood of Christ. It was a fathomless and painful sacrifice, so painful that He cried to His Father, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me." But He added, "Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will." (Matthew 16:39) He would not draw back. He would not even withhold His life. "Greater love has no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13) "You see at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us!" (Romans 5:6-8)
This love He showed toward us. He laid down His life for us. He loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood!

Blessed Savior! How can we love You enough for Your great love to us? You gave Your blood for us what can we give to You? You endured for us the agony in the garden, the shame, the mocking, the cross what would You have us to bear for You? You withheld nothing from us oh, help us to withhold nothing from You! May we give You our whole hearts and love You above all, and bear with patience all that You call us to suffer. When He had redeemed us by His blood, then He raised us to wonderful happiness and glory. He "has made us kings and priests unto God and His Father!" This is mentioned again in the song of the elders, in the fifth chapter, "You were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth!"

[Francis Bourdillon]

Revelation 1:5-6 ... And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. He Prays That We May Experience It!

Paul acknowledges that the love of Jesus is too great to be fully understood, yet he prays that we may experience it! The apostle is not referring to a merely intellectual understanding, but a personal, transformative relationship with the Lord Jesus. We can only truly experience this love, through the Gospel. Christ's love is most clearly seen in the cross.

As we meditate on Jesus' wondrous sacrifice for our sins, we are overwhelmed by the vastness of His love. Though we may never fully comprehend it, we can rest in the assurance that His love for us is infinite, and deeper than all of our sins and shame! May His measureless love for us, lead us to a life of gratitude, worship, humility, and holiness.

We shall never know the depths of Christ's love for us, until we feel the weight of our sin, and the worth of His sin-atoning death, which delivers us from the Hell that we rightly deserve. This unsearchable love of Jesus humbles the pride of man, exalts the grace of God, and calls us to a life of holiness!

[Charles H. Spurgeon]

Romans 5:8  ... But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Ephesians 3:18-19 ... May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. ❤

God's Love to Us!!

The love of God to sinners is an ocean without shore, a mystery that stretches beyond the grasp of the highest angel. That the infinitely holy God--before whom seraphim cover their faces should set His heart upon those who were defiled, defiant, and dead in sin is the most humbling truth in all of Scripture. His love was not merited by anything in us, for we were altogether sinful and unlovely. Yet He loved us!

And His love was not a mere sentiment it took action. He gave His Son, His only, His beloved to bear the curse we deserved. The Father did not spare Him, but handed Him over to be mocked, scourged, and nailed to a cross! There, the spotless Lamb of God endured the sin-atoning wrath due to the very ones who hated Him. What tongue can express such love? What mind can fathom its depth? This love is not a relic of the past it is alive and active this very moment. He loves us still.

In discipline and direction, in provision and pain His love sustains and sanctifies us. It is unchanging, invincible, and ever nearby. No failure of ours exhausts it; no affliction removes it. His love is as eternal as He is. This love is the well-spring of every spiritual blessing. Let this melt the pride of our hearts, still our restless fears, and ignite a life of glad obedience. Nothing strengthens faith, calms the soul, or drives us to holiness like the felt reality of Christ's astonishing love in dying for such vile, undeserving sinners like us!

O believer, marvel and rejoice you are loved with a love that never began, will never fade, and can never be broken!

The Astonishing Love of Jesus For Us!

There is no greater wonder in all the universe than this: that the infinitely holy Son of God would set His heart upon vile, guilty, Hell-deserving sinners. "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us!" Not when we were seeking Him. Not when we were repenting. Not when we were bettering ourselves. But while we were rebels, with hearts full of enmity against Him, He loved us still. (Romans 5:6, 8, 10)

Paul, once a blasphemer and persecutor of Christ's church, could only marvel: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinner of whom I am the worst!" (1 Timothy 1:15)   So, it is with all who have been given eyes to see their corruption, and hearts to feel their need. When we know ourselves rightly, we are utterly astonished that Jesus would save such ungodly ones as ourselves.

Our salvation was not the fruit of our seeking, but of His. "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save those who are lost!" (Luke 19:10) It was the overflowing of His sovereign, unmerited love. Dead in sin, blind in mind, corrupt in heart yet He loved us, and by His great mercy made us spiritually alive. (Ephesians 2:4–5)

What love is this, that stooped so low? "He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities." (Isaiah 53:5) The pure and spotless Lamb bore the filth and condemnation of our sin. He who knew no sin, was made sin for us, "so that in Him, we might become the righteousness of God." (2 Corinthians 5:21) It was not out of obligation, but out of sheer grace. "When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy." (Titus 3:4–5)

Christian! Jesus loved you before the world began, He loves you now and He will love you forever! His love for you is unfathomable it is as boundless as infinity. Oh, the precious love of Jesus! It is the sun in the heavens of grace, the river in the garden of mercy, and the foundation of the temple of redemption!

The love of Jesus is the most amazing thing under Heaven, if not in Heaven itself. Oh, what a Savior is ours! His love is not shallow or sentimental it is a love that bleeds, and bears wrath. It is a love that will never let us go. It is a love that astonishes us now and will be our wonder and song for all eternity.

[Charles H. Spurgeon]

Revelation 1:5–6 ... And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. In Love!!

Behold the overflowing riches of the grace and love of Jesus. Every page of the Gospel story teaches the love of His heart to His redeemed people.

In love He receives His people as His own. Before the world was framed, He inscribed them on the tablets of His heart.

In love He undertakes their cause and espouses them as His bride.

In love He works out for them a righteousness so bright, so perfect, so glorious that Jehovah's eye can find no flaw, no spot, no blemish in it.

In love He beautifies them with His shining robe and fits them for the banquet in the Heaven of heavens.

In love He guards them from every foe and makes them more than conquerors over all the hosts of darkness.

In love He causes all things to work together for their good. In love He leads them to lie down in the rich pastures of Bible truth and instructs them in the Word which is "able to make them wise unto salvation."

In love He will come again to receive them to Himself.

In love He will present them pure and blameless to His Father with exceeding joy.

In love He will dwell among them through the ages of eternity!

O The Wonders Couched in Electing Love!

Did the shepherd prize his flock? God calls His people, "His flock, His beautiful flock." Does the miser prize his wealth? God says of His people, "You shall be a special treasure unto Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine." Does the prince prize his jewels? God says of His people, "They shall be Mine, in that day when I make up My jewels!" (Malachi 3:17) Does the bridegroom prize his beloved and dearly purchased bride? It is written, "As the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you!" (Isaiah 62:5) Does the reigning monarch prize his crown? God has said, "You shall be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God."  (Isaiah 62:3)

What wondrous love, such expressions as these represent! How precious must the Lord's people be to Him! Truly they are His special treasure! God chose them to be special unto Himself. He chose them out from among others. He chose them in preference to others. He chose them out from others, on purpose that they may be a special people unto Himself. And in so doing, He acted FREELY. It was not on account of anything He saw in them, or on account of anything He expected from them; but in the exercise of His most free and holy sovereignty, He chose them to participate in the glory of His Son! In choosing them, He acted also DELIBERATELY. It was no hasty choice. His thoughts had been eternally filled with them. His heart had been eternally set upon them.

Therefore, He chose them in Christ before the foundation of the world! In choosing them, He acted WISELY, as He really desired to have them. For each one of them is ready to confess that if God had not chosen them, that they would never have chosen Him! The nature regulates the choice; and as our nature is carnal and impure, we would never have chosen God who is spiritual and holy. His choice was just an early expression of His LOVE. The love which chose them, would do anything for them, and give anything to them!

Therefore, God spared not His own Son but delivered Him up for them all; and in so doing, gave them the assurance that He will also freely give them all things in Christ. O the wonders couched in electing love! This act of choosing such creatures as we are, to be a special people unto Himself, displays such grace, such condescension, such infinite wisdom and love!

How Ravishing is The Thought!!

How ravishing is the thought of eternal love! Try to drink it in. If you are a believer in Christ, you were loved before time began its cycles. In that old eternity, before the earth was born, you were beloved of the Lord. You were dear to Jehovah's heart when this great world, the sun, the moon, the stars slept in the mind of God like unborn forests in an acorn-cup.

He loved you with an everlasting and infinite love. God chose you, not because of any goodness in you but of his own sovereign will and good pleasure. Rejoice in this and let your heart be glad. Never forget that sovereign and eternal election is the source of your every spiritual blessing!

Be Like Christ!!

Christians should excel in the manifestation of Christ's character. The mind, which was in Jesus, should be in them. They should consider His character as a model of their own; and be conspicuous for their poverty of spirit, meekness, gentleness, and love.

It is matter of surprise and regret, that many people seem to think that Christianity has nothing to do with character! And that provided they are free from gross sins, and have lively feelings in devotional exercises, they may be as petulant, irritable, and implacable as they please! This is a dreadful error and has done great mischief to the cause of God!

A sour, ill-natured Christian is like a lamb with a wolf's head, or like a dove with a vulture's beak! If there be any one word which above all others should describe a Christian's character, it is that which represents his divine Father; and as it is said, that 'God is love', so should it be also affirmed, that a Christian is love embodied, an incarnation of love! His words, his conduct, his very looks should be so many expressions of love!

[J. A. James]

The Constraining Love of Jesus!

The love of Jesus has a constraining power, which invincibly impels us to live unto Him. Let it once be "shed abroad in our hearts," and we shall instantly exclaim with rapture, "My Lord, and my God!" "What have I to do any more with idols?" will be the natural effusion of our souls! (Hosea 14:8)

We will feel a holy indignation at the thought of having wickedly sinned against Him for so long and shall address Him in the language of His repenting people, "O Lord, our God, other masters besides You have ruled over us, but we will acknowledge and mention Your name alone!" (Isaiah 26:13)

Walk with God as His dear children. Commit to Him your every care and expect from Him a supply of all your needs! Motivated by His all-constraining love, be ready to sacrifice every earthly consideration, and to even lay down life itself for Him!

"My Pens"

He wants to write ‘Love’ all over the world, you are "My Pens."  You were designed to be filled and flow freely wherever He uses you. A pen that works and then doesn’t work is frustrating in the hand of its master. So, it is with cursing and blessing, life and death, love and pride. This is faulty and part of the fall of man.

But His original design for man was constant flow of giving and receiving love. He came to restore that which is blocked and broken, that once again His life would fill you and flow out from you onto a world that has lost its identity.

Write, ‘I AM LOVE’ on your heart. Then do the same to those around you. Do not forget your identity. The ink of His Spirit flows reliable through those that receive and give its reality. Write, ‘My Love’ on everything. Complete the sentence as it was intended. His Words never faulter and always produce Truth, which brings clarity.

Confusion comes from lies. Guard your heart above all else for it is the wellspring of life. Submit to His filling and then flow onto others just as He has flowed onto you. Love as He have loved you. Give to others what He have freely given to you.

Speak and write, ‘Reliable Love’ with your life. His love is constant and eternal. His Words always write Faithful and True. He seeks to replicate His Words, His Life, in you, His vessels of love.

Look to The Eternal Outcome!

The doctrine of God's all-disposing providence is most comforting to the mind of man. If everything were left to chance or were at the disposal of mortal men, we would have nothing to cheer us in adversity, or to moderate our pride in prosperity. What a comfort is the thought that all things are directed by our all-wise God, who "does according to His will with all the angels of Heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth!"

Whatever the designs of men may be, the fact that "His counsel shall surely stand" preserves our minds composed and peaceful in every situation, and in every condition. We must not think that God interposes only in great concerns, such as the fate of empires. He equally interests Himself in all the events that are daily and hourly occurring, even in the most trivial matters.

Whatever trials we have, or whatever blessings we enjoy God must be regarded as the true and only source of all! We must learn how to judge of everything, whether prosperous or adverse, in our own affairs. We must always look to the eternal outcome! What will prosperity benefit us, if it draws us away from God, and leads us, like the rich fool, to fix our happiness on things below? On the other hand, what reason can we have to complain of afflictions, if they are sanctified to our spiritual and eternal good?

Our severest afflictions are intended to humble us, and to bring us to the footstool of our God. We should receive all of our personal afflictions as from Him; and, having done so, we should "hear the rod, and Him who appointed it." Were we but attentive to God's voice in afflictive dispensations, we would say to the instruments of our trials, as Joseph did to his brethren, "It was not you who sent me here, but God!"

Instead of quarreling with second causes, we should kiss the divine hand that smote us! Do not then be so much concerned to get rid of present trials, as to have them made subservient to the good of your souls. Only trust in Him who orders all of our affairs with unerring wisdom and unbounded love!

Where love is, God is.

[ Henry Drummond]

John 13:34-35 ... A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Broke Her Heart All in Pieces

The more a man apprehends of the love of God, and of the love of Christ the more that person will grieve and mourn that he has offended, provoked, and grieved such a Father, and such a Son. The more clear and certain evidence a man has of the love and favor of God to his soul, the more that man will grieve and mourn for sinning against such a God.

There is nothing which thaws and melts the heart, which softens and breaks the heart like the warm beams of divine love as you may see in the case of Mary Magdalene. She loved much, and she wept much for much was forgiven her. A sight of the free grace and love of Christ towards her, in an act of forgiveness, broke her heart all in pieces.

A man cannot stand under the shining of divine love with a frozen heart, nor with dry eyes. The more a man sees of the love of Christ, and the more a man tastes and enjoys of the love of Christ the more that man will grieve and mourn for all the dishonors that he has done to Christ.

[Thomas Brooks]

Luke 7:38 ...  And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

The Love of Christ.

Christ's love surpasses knowledge! Blessed fact! His love is so vast, so full, so free that it cannot in its completeness be comprehended by finite minds. But enough of it may be known to satisfy our longing hearts, and to fill us with joy and peace.

Let it be our constant desire to know and feel the Savior's love. Let us dwell with wonder and delight on that marvelous manifestation of it the sin-atoning sacrifice of Himself for us! What love must that be, that led Him to die, even the death of the cross, for our sins! "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" but Jesus died for His enemies!

Did He die for us as His enemies then what is His love to us now that we are His friends? It is unutterable! May the Holy Spirit reveal Christ's love to us now in such measure as we may be able to understand and enjoy it; but the full disclosures of it await that period when we shall be with Him and shall see Him as He is!

Ephesians 3:18-19 ... May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. ❤
