Choose Life!!

 If you reject Jesus Christ, then you reject your only way into Heaven.

Choose wisely.

Deuteronomy 30:19 ...  I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:

Romans 6:23 ...  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

John 14:6 ... Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

O The Wonders Couched in Electing Love!

Did the shepherd prize his flock? God calls His people, "His flock, His beautiful flock." Does the miser prize his wealth? God says of His people, "You shall be a special treasure unto Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine." Does the prince prize his jewels? God says of His people, "They shall be Mine, in that day when I make up My jewels!" (Malachi 3:17) Does the bridegroom prize his beloved and dearly purchased bride? It is written, "As the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you!" (Isaiah 62:5) Does the reigning monarch prize his crown? God has said, "You shall be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God."  (Isaiah 62:3)

What wondrous love, such expressions as these represent! How precious must the Lord's people be to Him! Truly they are His special treasure! God chose them to be special unto Himself. He chose them out from among others. He chose them in preference to others. He chose them out from others, on purpose that they may be a special people unto Himself. And in so doing, He acted FREELY. It was not on account of anything He saw in them, or on account of anything He expected from them; but in the exercise of His most free and holy sovereignty, He chose them to participate in the glory of His Son! In choosing them, He acted also DELIBERATELY. It was no hasty choice. His thoughts had been eternally filled with them. His heart had been eternally set upon them.

Therefore, He chose them in Christ before the foundation of the world! In choosing them, He acted WISELY, as He really desired to have them. For each one of them is ready to confess that if God had not chosen them, that they would never have chosen Him! The nature regulates the choice; and as our nature is carnal and impure, we would never have chosen God who is spiritual and holy. His choice was just an early expression of His LOVE. The love which chose them, would do anything for them, and give anything to them!

Therefore, God spared not His own Son but delivered Him up for them all; and in so doing, gave them the assurance that He will also freely give them all things in Christ. O the wonders couched in electing love! This act of choosing such creatures as we are, to be a special people unto Himself, displays such grace, such condescension, such infinite wisdom and love!

Your Enemy!

Unconverted sinner! You are not only against God, but God Himself is against you! As there is no friend like Him so there is no enemy like Him. As much as heaven is above the earth, omnipotence above impotence so much more terrible is it to fall into the hands of the living God, than into the paws of bears and lions yes, furies or devils!

God Himself will be your tormentor! Who or what shall deliver you out of His hands? Sinner, I think this would go like a dagger to your heart to know that God Himself is your enemy!

Oh, where will you go? Where will you shelter yourself? The infinite God is engaged against you! He hates all workers of iniquity. Man, does not your heart tremble to think of your being an object of God's hatred? "As surely as I live, when I sharpen My flashing sword and begin to carry out justice, I will bring vengeance on My enemies and repay those who hate Me!" (Deuteronomy 32:40-41)

The power of God is mounted like a mighty cannon against you! Sinner, the power of God's anger is against you and power and anger together make fearful work. There is no escaping His hands no breaking loose from His prison. Submit to mercy. Let not dust and stubble battle against the Almighty.

Commenting Upon the Bible

Chrysostom compares the Scripture to a garden every truth is a fragrant flower which we should wear, not on our bosom, but in our heart! David counted the Word "sweeter than honey and the honeycomb". There is that in Scripture which may breed delight. It shows us the way to riches, Deuteronomy 28:8, Proverbs 3:30; to long life, Psalm 34:42; to a Kingdom, Hebrews 12:28.

Well then may we count those the sweetest hours, which are spent in reading the holy Scriptures. Well may we say with the prophet, "Your words were found, and I ate them. Your words became a delight to me and the joy of my heart!" (Jeremiah 15:16) Conform to Scripture. Let us lead Scripture lives.

Oh, that the Bible might be seen printed in our lives! Do what the Word commands. Obedience is an excellent way of commenting upon the Bible. "Teach me Your way, O Lord, and I will walk in Your truth." (Psalm 86:11) Let the Word be the sundial by which you set your life. What are we the better for having the Scripture, if we do not direct all our speech and actions according to it? What are we the better for the rule of the Word, if we do not make use of it, and regulate our lives by it? What a dishonor is it to religion, for men to live in contradiction to Scripture! The Word is called a "light to our feet".  (Psalm 119:105) It is not only a light to our eyes to mend our sight but to our feet to mend our walk.

Oh, let us lead Bible lives! Be thankful to God for the Scriptures. What a mercy is it that God has not only acquainted us what His will is, but that He has made it known by writing! The Scripture is our polestar to direct us to Heaven, it shows us every step we are to take. When we go wrong it instructs us; when we go right it comforts us. Adore God's distinguishing grace, if you have felt the power and authority of the Word upon your conscience if you can say as David, "Your Word has quickened me." (Psalm 119:50)

Christian, bless God that He has not only given you His Word to be a rule of holiness but His grace to be a principle of holiness. Bless God that He has not only written His Word, but sealed it upon your heart, and made it effectual. Can you say it is of divine inspiration, because you have felt it to be of lively operation?

Oh, free grace! That God should send out His Word and heal you. That He should heal you, and not others! That the same Scripture which to them is a dead letter, should be to you a savor of life!

[Thomas Watson]

Psalm 119:97 ...  O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

God's Cup!!

God's mode of dealing is often wrapped in mystery. We fail to understand why one is elevated to the highest rank while others seem to waste their days in poverty and obscurity. But no doubts should arise. It should be firmly fixed in our persuasions, that in all these matters, God's hand prevails. "The Lord brings death and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and raises up. The Lord sends poverty and wealth; He humbles, and he exalts." (1 Samuel 2:6-7)

In the same way, afflictions, sorrows and trials are all appointed by the same unerring wisdom! God's hand holds a cup which is mixed in accordance with His sovereign and righteous will. According to His good pleasure, He causes all men to drink from it. But what will be the portion of the wicked? "It is God alone who judges. For the Lord holds a cup in His hand; it is full of foaming wine mixed with spices. He pours the wine out in judgment, and all the wicked must drink it, draining it to the dregs!" (Psalm 75:7-8)

Let the unsaved tremble! They are forewarned that they must drink God's cup to the dreg's indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish forever!

[Henry Law]

Deuteronomy 32:39 ...  See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.

As Your Days — So Shall Your Strength Be!

Here is a precious promise for a trying day! It belongs to every Christian who is traveling to the Celestial City. It provides for every part of life's journey; for every day as each day may require. It is especially suited to the dark days, the wintry days, and the trying days when all our earthly props fail us; the days when our fellow man cannot help us.

Fellow pilgrim! Are you dispirited, depressed, and cast down? Are you looking back upon the past with sorrow and forward into the future with fear? Cheer up! The Lord will not lay on you more than He will enable you to bear nor will He allow any other to do so. However weak you may feel in yourself, however rough the road you may need to travel, however heavy the burden you may have to carry God will supply you with sufficient strength for the day! He has never allowed you to be crushed yet, though you may have staggered under some heavy burdens. He who has helped you in the past is still your helper today. He will also help you in all the future. "As your days" be they as troublesome as they may "so shall your strength be." Whether your day brings life or death, joy or trial it does not matter. God will send you exactly what you need to pass through it!

Do not look at your trials, do not dwell on your inability but lay hold on the promises of God and seek His grace to exercise faith in Him. Then let Satan suggest what he pleases, or the flesh object as it may you will be able to say, "I will not fear; for as my day so shall my strength be. He who has promised will also fulfill His promise." Blessed Lord, I praise You for this precious promise! Help, oh, help me to trust in it; and day by day as duty or trials may require enable me to look to You and expect sufficient strength from You!

[James Smith]

The Happy Child!!

Survey the picture. It is lovely in repose. We seem to see a child without a single care seated securely by a parent's side. No anxious fears disturb. Undoubting trust spreads its calm influence. A Father, strong and watchful, is at hand. An arm is ready to defend. The happy child knows it and confides.

The image tenderly depicts the true believer's blessed state: He sits in peace beside his God. Faith's wings have borne him upwards. His heart and thoughts have settled in a tranquil realm. The restless wanderings of former days are past. There was a time when he was tossed about on stormy waves. He wandered hopelessly in search of peace. But now he rests in his God. His home is by his Father's side!

"The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by Him." With filial confidence, bring each trial, each trouble, each sorrow, each need, each affliction, each doubt, each distress, to your father's listening ear! God is near to cheer you, to bless you, to wipe your weeping eye, to soothe your wounded heart, to raise your drooping spirit, to send the pilgrim singing on his way.

[Henry Law]

Deuteronomy 33:12 ... And of Benjamin he said, The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by him; and the Lord shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders.

Absolute Sovereignty!!

One has stated, "God does not permit things to happen. He purposed all that comes to pass in time, before time began. And all that He ordained from eternity and performs in time, is good."

Sadly, many in Christendom do not accept the teaching of God's absolute Sovereignty over His world. I offer the following Scriptures without comment, for your perusal:

"Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord?" Exodus 4:11

"See now that I myself am He! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand." Deuteronomy 32:39

"The Lord brings death and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and raises up. The Lord sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts." 1 Samuel 2:6-7

"Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" Job 2:10

"For hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble sprout from the ground." Job 5:6

"For He wounds, but He also binds up; He injures, but His hands also heal." Job 5:18 "When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider: God has made the one as well as the other." Ecclesiastes 7:14

"This is what the Lord says: As I have brought all this great calamity on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised them." Jeremiah 32:42

"Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come?" Lamentations 3:38

"When disaster comes to a city, has not the Lord caused it?" Amos 3:6

Daily Strength!

The Christian is frequently compared to a pilgrim, traveling onwards through a dreary wilderness, to the promised land of Canaan. His experience is varied and checkered. The path before him may be steep and arduous. He may have to pass through rough and stony places; dark, thick forests; rapid streams; and raging hurricanes. His days may be such, as to require great strength, and great energy, and great perseverance. Oftentimes, when he strives to anticipate the future his heart sinks within him, his courage fails, and he is apt to give way to despondency and doubt.

But such a promise, "As your days, so shall your strength be," may well suffice to calm the believer's fears, and re-animate his fainting spirit. It is true, that changes and vicissitudes will come. It is true, that the heart which today is cheerful and happy, may tomorrow be wounded and bleeding. It is true, that the full cup, which is now held with gladness, may be dashed in pieces, before the lips have tasted the refreshing draught. It is true, that the bright hope which, like a guiding star, allures the traveler onwards, may speedily be enwrapped in pitch-black gloom.

But to the child of God, there is a supply of strength to meet the hour of trial. He is not permitted to escape from the burden, or the cross, or the difficulty. But he is enabled to make his way through them all to struggle with, and finally to overcome them. Many a time, when the believer has been well near crushed under the oppressive weight; when, conscious that ordinary strength would not avail, he has cried unto the Lord and a fresh supply of grace has been given to meet the emergency. So that he could say with David, "I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along." (Psalm 40:1-2)

It would be easy for God to make the path heavenward, plain and unobstructed to His children. It would be easy for Him to remove all care, anxiety, and sorrow. But such is not His purpose. Earth is the training school for Heaven. God wills that His children should be tried. He desires that their spiritual natures should be refined and purified in the furnace of affliction. And that thus, by the very struggles and pains of their earthly pilgrimage, they should become more and more fit for serving Him in this world, and more and more fit for the inheritance of the saints in light. The Christian by each difficulty he is called on to encounter; by each trial he is summoned to bear; by each virtue he is required to call into exercise becomes more vigorous, earnest, faithful, and Christlike.

His soul is gradually training and strengthening by duty, trial, and endurance here for glory, honor, and immortality hereafter. Every fresh victory over pride, over the world, over avarice, over selfishness, over fretfulness, makes us stronger for the time to come, and ensures the fulfillment of the promise, "As your days, so shall your strength be." Christian! mark again these words. They do not pledge that we shall not feel the burden and heat of the day. All they promise, is that we shall get safely through. They do not say that we shall not feel the weight of our duties, trials, temptations, or conflicts. All they say, is that we shall have strength to bear their weight, and journey on with our load. The grace imparted, will then be "sufficient" for us sufficient for our actual necessities, sufficient strength equal to our day.  Strength to encounter the tempest will be given when the tempest rages. Strength to surmount the foaming surges will be given when the hurricane has actually come. Strength to grapple with the last enemy will be given when he comes forth to meet you.

Yes Christian! Be assured that grace and strength will be imparted when you need them as certainly as they will be withheld before you need them. He who guides you, knows your necessities. In the day of trouble, He will not leave you comfortless. Journey on, then, with firmness, relying on His promise for needed grace and strength. You will, before long, enter into your final rest, and bid an eternal adieu to all your labors, and trials, and temptations. You will take possession of the promised glorious inheritance, and will then acknowledge with a grateful heart, "As my days, so has my strength been!"

[John MacDuff]

Deuteronomy 33:25 ... Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be.

Conviction...

 You are in a very dangerous place if you lose the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

God is most angry with someone when He no longer corrects them.

Repent.

Psalm 7:11 ... God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.

Romans 1:28 ...  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Job 4:9 ... By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.

Deuteronomy 31:17 ... Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?

"God Hates"

What is God's attitude toward unregenerate man?  It has been said that God hates sin, but He loves the sinner. Is this true?

Let us hear the voice of inspiration:
"You hate all workers of iniquity The Lord abhors murderers and deceitful men!" Psalm 5:5, 6

Does that express an attitude of love on God's part?

Again, we read, "The LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked and those who love violence, His soul hates. On the wicked He will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot!" Psalm 11:5-6

"Because they did all these things, I abhorred them!" Leviticus 20:23

"I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars and pile your dead bodies on the lifeless forms of your idols, and I will abhor you." Leviticus 26:30

"And when the LORD saw it, He abhorred them!" Deuteronomy 32:19

We read further, "God is angry with the wicked every day!" Psalm 7:11

"The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished!" Proverbs 16:5

God is not so meek and indulgent that nothing will arouse His indignation. He hates all that is sinful. He could not love righteousness, without hating iniquity. He could not love the righteous, without hating the wicked. To love both, would be to abolish all moral distinctions. Of the impenitent sinner it is said, "The wrath of God abides on him!" (John 3:36)

It is only sin that renders him hateful, but man is responsible for his state of sinfulness and chooses evil; therefore, to deal with the sin, God must deal with the man. Not only does God hate man's sin, every sinful word, thought, and deed--but He also hates every evil desire. The natural man loves evil. That love of evil, which is a part of his nature God abhors! All desire that runs out after impurity or for that which is unholy merits and excites God's indignation and abhorrence.

Every evil ambition that arises in his soul, repels God. Every evil disposition, every evil feeling, hatred, envy, malice, revenge, selfishness, pride, jealousy, deceit, hypocrisy, and all the long catalog of evil things, of which man's heart is the source are obnoxious to God. All tendency to oppose the will of God, all rebellion at His providences can only excite hatred in God. God can love only what is pure and holy. All else He hates and must hate with all the strength of His righteous character!

I don't care about your political leanings; I do care, however, if you don't vote. Don't claim some spiritual or Christian superiority or how you see the nation as it is, but yet you fail to do your civic duty in one of the most democratic forms of governance in a free society, the ability to vote your conscience.

One Day At a Time!

One day at a time, with its failures and fears,
With its hurts and mistakes, with its weakness and tears,
With its portion of pain, and its burden of care;
One day at a time, we must meet and must bear.

One day at a time, to be patient and strong,
To be calm under trial, and sweet under wrong;
Then its toiling shall pass, and its sorrow shall cease;
It shall darken and die, and the night shall bring peace.

One day at a time, but the day is so long,
And the heart is not brave, and the soul is not strong,
O piteous Christ, be near all the way;
Give courage and patience, and strength for the day.

Swift cometh His answer, so clear and so sweet;
"Yes I will be with you, your troubles to meet;
I will not forget you, nor fail you, nor grieve;
I will not forsake you; I never will leave."

Not yesterday's load, we are called on to bear,
Nor the morrow's uncertain and shadowy care;
Why should we look forward, or back with dismay?
Our needs, as our mercies, are but for the day.

One day at a time, and the day is His day;
He has numbered its hours, though they haste or delay.
His grace is sufficient, we walk not alone;
As the day so the strength, that He giveth His own.

[Annie Johnson Flint]

Hard Christmas ~

If Christmas is hard, if you’ve lost someone dear.
 Just look in your heart, and you’ll know they’re still here.
 The star in the sky, the light falling snow.
 The robin outside, it seems like they know.
If this is a time, when you’re struggling through.
 Just do what you can, for what matters, is you.
 There’s no need to be merry, there’s no need to be bright.
 Just do what you can, it will all be alright.

The Trials and Sufferings of The Godly

God's own people often suffer great afflictions! "This is what the wicked are like always carefree, they increase in wealth. Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure; in vain have I washed my hands in innocence. For I am afflicted all day long!" (Psalm 73:12-14)

How can this be consistent with God's justice? God's ways of judgment are sometimes secret, but never unjust! The Lord never afflicts His people without a cause; He cannot be unjust towards them. There is some good in the godly therefore the wicked afflict them. There is some evil in them therefore God afflicts them! God's own children have their blemishes. "But aren't you also guilty of sins against the Lord your God?" (2 Chronicles 28:10)

These spiritual diamonds have they no flaws? Do we not read of the spots of God's children? Are not they guilty of much pride, passion, worldliness? Though, by their profession, they should resemble the birds of paradise, to fly above, and feed upon the dew of heaven—yet, as the serpent, they often lick the dust! The sins of God's people do more provoke God than the sins of others. "The Lord saw this and was filled with loathing. He was provoked to anger by His own sons and daughters." (Deuteronomy 32:19)

The sins of others pierce Christ's side. The sins of His people wound His heart! Therefore, is not God just in all the afflictions which befall them? "You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore, I will punish you for all your sins." (Amos 3:2) I will punish you sooner, surer, sorer than others.

The trials and sufferings of the godly, are to refine and purify them. God's furnace is in Zion. Is it any injustice in God to put His gold into the furnace to purify it? Is it any injustice in God, by afflicting His people, to make them partakers of His holiness? What more proclaims God's faithfulness than to take such a course with them as may make them more holy?

[Thomas Watson]

Psalm 119:75 ...  I know, O Lord, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.

Answered Prayer

My wife married me as a crushed single father, struggling to make ends meet. We lived in a townhouse apartment up against a freeway. Literally. We needed to move out of our rental two years ago. Because of my bankruptcy due to my divorce, years prior, my credit was shot. We needed a miracle. With hardly any rentals on the market and 40-70 other families with excellent credit to snatch up the houses, we really did need a miracle.

My simple prayer, “LORD, I know you can custom lead us. We don’t have selfish ambition. Please show the children your goodness. That You can custom provide for us, even if we are not ‘money focused’, please show the children Your goodness and faithfulness, in Jesus Mighty Name.”

God led us in a few distinct ways that would have been impossible without paying attention to His ‘inspired directives’. GOD DID AN AMAZING MIRACLE. 70 families were interested in this house, but God miraculously gave us favor! The rest is History!!

Overlooks sheep. Private Creek. Private Pond. Multiple Fruit Trees. In fact, this is the first fruit from this Summer. We just picked it tonight!

I remember when we were three weeks away from being homeless.  Our good friend who happens to have a powerful prophetic gift, told us, “I see God blessing you guys with a house that will be BEYOND YOUR WILDEST DREAMS." I remember at the time feeling more fear than faith. I still felt at peace, but I would have just been happy with a tiny clean ‘whatever’.

God, again, showed us just how good and amazing He really is!! This house is so far beyond what I could have imagined that I am still beyond speechless.

Deuteronomy 7:12-13 ... Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the Lord thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers:  And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

Ephesians 3:20 ... Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

His Special People!!

God highly prizes His people. Yes, it is impossible to say how highly He prizes them. Those are wondrous words, "For the Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself, Israel for His own special treasure!" (Psalm 135:4) Did the shepherd prize his flock?

Therefore, God spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for them all; and in so doing, gave them the assurance that He will also freely give them all things in Christ. O the wonders couched in electing love! This act of choosing such creatures as we are, to be a special people unto Himself, displays such grace, such condescension, such infinite wisdom and love! God's election says, "The Lord loves you!" Loves us! Yes, and with a love that is eternal, immutable, sovereign, infinite, and free!

All the love of God is lavished upon us as His special people in Christ. Oh, those wondrous words of Jesus, "You have loved them, even as You have loved Me!" (John 17:23) But few among the worldly wise, but few of nobler race, Obtain the favor of Your eyes, Almighty King of grace!

[James Smith]

Deuteronomy 7:6 ... For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
