You may not believe in God or the Devil now.  But, the moment you take your last breath, you will.

The Curtain Falls

 Unbeliever, what is your hope?

To live long? Yes, and what then?

To bring up a family? Yes, and what then?

To see them comfortably settled in life? Yes, and what then?

To be a grandfather to a numerous progeny? Yes, and what then?

To reach extreme old age in peaceful retirement? Yes, and what then?

The curtain falls! Let me lift it:

The cemetery.

The judgment throne of God.

Sentence on your soul.

The trumpet of resurrection.

Final doom.

Body and soul in Hell forever.

You have no better prospect.

Solomon's Song ...

When inward piety is low, then the externals of religion are frequently made much of. The Pharisees, who were furthest from God, were the most bitter advocates of ritualism and formalism. They would not even have a man healed on the Sabbath day or allow the hungry to rub a few ears of corn out of the husks.

It is not always so, but yet too often:  "The nearer the church, the further from God."

The more of religious display, the less of genuine grace.  The more visible religiosity, the less of heart holiness.   The more of religious machinery, the less of true godliness.

Beloved, let us not only have Christ in the head, but Christ in the heart. Know all we can about Him, for everything we learn about Jesus, ought to be another argument for affection to Him. How I loved Him when I only knew myself as a sinner, and Jesus as a Savior. But oh, I love Him more as I see my greater sinfulness, and his greater mercy and grace!

Oh, to get more knowledge, and then to have our hearts enlarged that we may love Him more and more! You can love other things too much; but not your Lord. Embrace Him. Cry in the language of Solomon's Song, "Let Him kiss me with the kisses of His mouth!" The unsaved do not understand this Song: they say it is a mere love-ditty. They never will understand it until the Lord Jesus is precious to their hearts; and when He is once there as their joy and their all, then they will need just such golden speech as Solomon's Song.

A Deity of Their Own Making

There are many idolaters in the world, besides those who worship blocks of wood and stone. There are men who would scorn to be called idolaters, who, nevertheless, are not worshipers of the true God, but votaries of a deity of their own making. They have not made him with wood, or clay, or gold, or silver but they have fashioned him out of their own conceptions. They believe in a god such as they think God ought to be and according to the general rule and fashion now-a-days, the god whom men invent for themselves, is a being entirely devoid of justice. 

They say that the God of the Bible, who is the real, living and true God is vindictive, because He punishes all rebellion against His law; because, being at the head of all moral government, He will not allow His law to be trampled on with impunity and will by no means spare the guilty. The God who executes vengeance upon sinners, is not the God for men of the modern school. They want an easier deity, a far more lenient governor, a soft God for themselves. 

The God of Scripture never was loved by proud and carnally minded men. They set up an effeminate deity of their own, who is like themselves, who cares nothing about the evil of sin, and will simply overlook sin, and will allow sinners to go unpunished a god who does their bidding, for he quenches the fire of Hell, or renders it only a transient punishment for a few years. They set up a god who gives them license to think as they like and treat His Word as a scroll of cloth for them to cut according to their own fashion. 

The god of modern thought is not the God of the Bible, neither is he any more the true God than Baal or Ashtoreth, Jupiter or Apollo. The true God is the God who is revealed in the Scriptures and manifested in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is known only to those to whom He sovereignly reveals Himself and the rest, by their own carnal wisdom, are blinded, so that they have not seen Him, neither known Him.

If Anyone Does Not Love The Lord ...

If you do not love the Lord Jesus then you are on the way to judgment, and then to eternal condemnation. If you do not love the Lord Jesus, then you are going as fast as time can carry you away, away, away to the gloomy land where not a single ray of hope will ever pierce the midnight darkness. Away, away, away, to the place of eternal despair! 

If you do not love the Lord Jesus, then you are now in awful peril. You stand over the mouth of Hell upon a single plank, and that plank is rotten. You hang over the jaws of perdition by a slender thread, and the angel of justice is waiting to cut that thread in sunder! 

Oh, how dreadful to live and die in this cursed state! And then to wake up on the resurrection morning and see the King in His beauty on the throne, and to know that you are eternally cursed! You will cry to the rocks to hide you, and to the hills to cover you, for you are cursed! Then to be brought out before the great white throne resplendent in its holiness, and hear the fact announced so that all may know that you are eternally cursed! 

Ah, what will it be to see the bottomless pit open its mouth to devour you, and descending forever, to understand that you are not only cursed, but damned!

Your Enemy!

Unconverted sinner! You are not only against God, but God Himself is against you! As there is no friend like Him so there is no enemy like Him. As much as heaven is above the earth, omnipotence above impotence so much more terrible is it to fall into the hands of the living God, than into the paws of bears and lions yes, furies or devils! 

God Himself will be your tormentor! Who or what shall deliver you out of His hands? Sinner, I think this would go like a dagger to your heart to know that God Himself is your enemy! 

Oh, where will you go? Where will you shelter yourself? The infinite God is engaged against you! He hates all workers of iniquity. Man, does not your heart tremble to think of your being an object of God's hatred? "As surely as I live, when I sharpen My flashing sword and begin to carry out justice, I will bring vengeance on My enemies and repay those who hate Me!" (Deuteronomy 32:40-41)  

The power of God is mounted like a mighty cannon against you! Sinner, the power of God's anger is against you and power and anger together make fearful work. There is no escaping His hands no breaking loose from His prison. Submit to mercy. Let not dust and stubble battle against the Almighty.

Why Unbelievers Hate God's Word!

The real reason why unbelievers hate God's Word, is because they will not part with those sins which His Word condemns! Nor will they practice those holy duties which the Word commands! If they were willing to renounce their sins, they would find the Word of God to be precious and delightful to them, as an inexhaustible ocean of encouragement! 

But unbelievers hate to hear of: the wickedness of their hearts, the insufficiency of their best works to bring them to God, the impossibility of being saved without an entire dependence on the sin-atoning merits of Christ, the necessity an unreserved surrender to His will as seen in Scripture. Their pride and self-sufficiency are insurmountable obstacles to the proper reception of Scriptural instruction. They hate to be told that they are spiritually wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked before a holy God! 

They abhor to walk in the path of the righteous. They simply will not forsake the path of sin, which infallibly leads to destruction! It is in vain that the Scripture shows them the only genuine way to Heaven. They will never forsake that broad road of sin which inevitably leads to damnation! 

Between God and the unbeliever who perishes in his sins, there is a great gulf fixed a gulf that never can be passed. Once entered into the eternal world, the unbeliever has his state fixed forever! The man who dies unbelieving and impenitent, will bewail his folly in irremediable and everlasting misery!

You may deny Him.

Beliefs...

You are free to believe whatever you want to believe. 

 

But the Scriptures say ... 

 Life is short. 

 Death is real. 

 Hell is hot. 

 Eternity is long. 

 Only Jesus saves.

The Spiritually Blind

Poor man! you walk in darkness, though presented on every side with noon-day beams. You must commit yourself to your fellow-creatures, and by them be led from door to door. Who can but sympathize with your condition, and pity you? Poison unknown to you may be poured into your cup. You may fall into the fire or the water, or a ditch. You may dash your foot against every stone, and have the naked sword brandished at your bosom, while ignorant of your danger.

How melancholy, then, the case of those people who are spiritually blind, who drink the cruel "poison of asps;" who fall into every ditch of sin; who run into every danger; and oppose their hardened bosom against the naked point of justice's flaming sword! And how sad that the people in this condition, ignorant of their danger should sport with wrath, and make a mock at sin!

If we heard of whole nations struck blind, and not one left to lead another but all perishing in this deplorable situation, how would we feel in the tenderest manner for them! Now, are there not whole nations who sit in the region and shadow of death, who grope in darkness, and never find their way to heaven? For them, therefore we should feel in a tender manner from the very bottom of our souls. Should not all Christians exert themselves to their very utmost, to spread the saving knowledge of a Savior among the heathen? 

Could a man heal the blind, how would they gratefully accept the cure, and bless the healing hand! But, in a land where life and immortality are brought to light how many sits in darkness, and will not leave their gloomy cell for all the beauties of the day? Happy those who have the eyes of their mind opened, and in his heavenly light see light clearly; who see the deformity of sin, the beauty of holiness, the excellency of true religion, the necessity of the new birth, the preciousness of Christ, the glory of eternal realities; and shortly, in the light of glory, shall see as they are seen.

For a Drop of Pleasure!

Many murder their own souls! They willfully damn themselves and throw themselves into Hell! Who are those who murder their own souls? They willfully murder their souls who have no sense of God, or the world to come, and are past feeling. Tell them of God's holiness and justice, and they are not affected at all. "They made their hearts as an adamant stone!" (Zechariah 7:12) 

Sinners have adamantine hearts nothing will work upon them, neither ordinances nor judgments. They do not believe in God; they laugh at Hell. Thus, they murder their own souls, and throw themselves into Hell as fast as they can! They willfully murder their own souls who resign themselves to their lusts, let what will come of it. "Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more!" (Ephesians 4:19)   

Let ministers speak to them about their sins, let conscience speak, let afflictions speak they will have their lusts, even though they go to Hell for them! Do not this murder their own souls? Many say in their hearts, "Let our sins damn us just so that they but please us!" Herod will have his incestuous lusts, though it costs him his soul. For a drop of pleasure, men will drink a sea of wrath! These massacre and damn their own souls! 

Oh! take heed of murdering your own souls!

The Net

Unbelief makes sermons to be like showers of rain falling upon a rock! They neither mollify nor fructify, because men don't really believe them. If men really believed that sin was so bitter, and that wrath and Hell followed it would they take this serpent into their bosom? 

If men really believed that there was a beauty in holiness, that godliness was great gain, that there was joy in the way, and Heaven at the end would not they turn their feet into Christ's holy way? 

Men have some slight transient thoughts of these things; but their minds are not fully convinced, nor their conscience fully captivated into believing them. Unbelief is Satan's masterpiece the net by which he drags millions to Hell!

Unbelief!

Could we roll all sins into one mass; could we take murder, blasphemy, lust, theft, immorality, and everything that is vile and unite them all into one vast ball of horrid corruption, they would not even then equal the sin of unbelief! Unbelief is the cause of all crime, and the seed of every evil! 

In fact, everything that is evil and vile lies couched in that one word ... unbelief!

A Dreadful Release!!

When a poor lost soul dies, who has long lingered under some painful bodily disease, it is often said, "It is good for him that he is released from his pain." Yet it is a dreadful release from earth to Hell!
