Deceitfulness of Sin!

A deathbed is a great revealer. Some time ago, I was called to visit a lovely young woman on her deathbed. She had regularly attended the means of grace, often felt impressed under the Scriptures but never came to saving faith. She was suddenly seized with illness, which soon terminated fatally. On that sick bed, she saw things very differently to what she had done and deeply regretted the course she had pursued. Often on her dying pillow, she was heard to exclaim, "Oh the deceitfulness of sin! Oh, the deceitfulness of sin!" 

She now saw that it had deceived her and bitterly regretted that she had yielded to its fascinations. Reader! Sin is very deceitful. It never appears at first in its true colors but wears a mirthful garment to deceive. Beware of it, lest it deceive you. Many have never been undeceived until it was too late; the door of mercy was closed, and they were beyond the reach of salvation. 

JANE JONES was a lively, good-tempered, kind young woman. Her conduct was moral, and she stood well with her employers. She read her Bible, sometimes attended a place of worship and her case appeared very hopeful. But she was invited to a public dance. She hesitated about going. She was pressed and was assured there was no harm in it. She went. She was fascinated. She soon gave up reading her Bible. Then she neglected public worship and went out visiting friends on the Lord's Day. She acquired a fondness for dress, for mirthful company, for music, for parties in a word, for all that was frivolous and mirthful. But in the end, she was ruined. She lost her job and her character, her conscience became hardened, she could laugh at serious things and became a victim to the deceitfulness of sin. One step led on to another, until she perished in her own deceiving's, and became the victim of her own folly! Had she refused to go to the dance, had she kept to her Bible and the house of prayer she might have lived respected, and died happy. 

Young woman! Beware of the village dancing-room. It was the ruin of Jane Jones and has been the ruin of thousands beside!

SAMUEL SMITH was a sober, steady, and industrious young man. He promised well. In the Sunday school he had learned many useful lessons, and under a faithful minister became "almost a Christian." But he was urged to join a club which met at a tavern, and, from an exaggerated representation of its advantages at length did so. At first, he went, paid his money, drank his pint of beer, and returned home. At length he took a pipe of tobacco. Soon after, he remained to hear one song. Soon he became fond of the society of vain, mirthful, thoughtless young men and at times drank so much that could not walk straight when he went home. A craving for strong drink, mirthful company, and foolish jests was produced, and step by step he was led on until he squandered his property, destroyed his health, and ruined his soul!  Disease was generated by his bad habits his constitution was undermined, and he sank into a premature grave. He was another victim to "the deceitfulness of sin."

Young man! avoid the tavern as you would a house full of disease! Join no society or club which holds its meetings there. The ruin of thousands has been accelerated thereby. If you take one step in sin you will be tempted to take another, and another, until you are undone! Yielding to temptation, is like making a break in a huge dam the waters will soon become all-powerful and carry everything before them. If you begin you cannot stop when you will; for habits are soon formed but once formed, are not easily broken off! Hence that fearful text of Scripture, "Let the Ethiopian change his skin, and the leopard his spots then may you also do good, who are accustomed to do evil."

HENRY MAYNE was a kind-hearted, amiable lad, a good son, and a faithful employee. His conscience was tender; his conduct was consistent. His mother was proud of him, and his father used to say, "there was not a better lad in the town than our Henry!" He had just turned his eighteenth year when he was coaxed away one day to the races. There he was introduced into mirthful company, which proved a snare to him. He became selfish, and his temper was soon soured. He could not bear the restraints of home. He was now too much of a 'man' to be tied to his mother's apron string nor would he put up with the old man's lectures. If he earned money, he had a right to do what he pleased with it, and he would, too!  He left home, went to lodge with a loose young man, and was soon added to the number of those who are destroyed through "the deceitfulness of sin." Poor Henry! he might have been a respectable young man, a useful member of society, and a happy Christian but sin deceived him, and he died as he lived a slave to his passions, one of the dupes of Satan led captive by the devil at his will.

Reader! beware of yielding to temptation! Beware, oh beware, of taking the first step in the road to ruin! Seek grace from God in prayer, to enable you to live godly, righteously, and soberly in the present world. Keep, Oh keep eternity in view, for you must live forever in happiness or woe! Your eternal destiny is fixed by the course you pursue in time. There is a strait gate and a narrow way that leads to glory, and comparatively few go in there at: and there is a wide gate and a broad road that leads to destruction and multitudes, multitudes, go in there at! Strive, therefore, to enter in at the strait gate, and be sure you enter it by a living faith. It leads to the way of holiness; it conducts to the presence of God.

Do not be deceived by sin! Do not walk in the way of sinners. Young woman! avoid the dancing-room, it is one of the first steps to ruin! Young man! avoid the tavern, and the racecourse for there is Satan lies in wait to destroy. The best way to escape from all the traps and snares that Satan lays for you is to come to Jesus and be saved from sin and the wrath to come through him!

The Model Church

1 Thessalonians 1:6-10 ... 6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost. So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia. For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing. For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; 10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

The beauty of this Church did not consist of a gorgeous material building, but of a people who are said to be "In God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ" (v. 1). And that they were examples to all believers (v. 7). Note their character. 

I. They were Saved from Wrath. "They were delivered from the wrath to come" (v 10) It should never be forgotten that there is "wrath to come" (Revelation 6:17) Wrath against all ungodliness. Blessed are they whom "God has appointed to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Thessalonians 5:9) Christ our Refuge. "Flee from the wrath to come." 

II. They were Converted to God. "They turned to God from idols" (v. 9). Christ is the atoning sacrifice for the sin of the world, but that fact in itself does not save the world; there must needs be a personal turning to God from sin and unbelief. The idols of the unconverted are numerous and varied. To turn to God is to forsake everything that would divide our affections or hinder our whole-hearted trust. 

III. They were Receivers of the Word of God. "They received the Word in much affliction" (v. 6) These were troublous times, as we learn from Acts 17; but the antagonism of the worldly-minded did not hinder them from boldly receiving the Word. It is always a sign of a healthy soul or Church, which gladly drinks in the truth as revealed in God's Word Human philosophies may have their place, but they are the food to build up a model Church. Quickened spirits need the "Word of Life." 

IV. They were Devoted to the Service of God. "They turned from idols to serve the living and true God" (v. 9). What a change! Serving the Living God, instead of dead things that only mocked their needs with a silent indifference. "To whom, O Lord, can we go but unto You?" You are worthy of the service of every power and passion, every thought and feeling of the soul, which You have redeemed by Your Blood. "Serve the Lord with gladness." 

V. They were Looking for the Son of God. They had made up their minds to serve, and "to wait for His Son from Heaven" (v. 10). They believed Christ would come again, as all the early Christians did, and as He Himself had promised This was called "that blessed hope." (Titus 2:13) The prophets of old looked and waited for the Coming of the Messiah long ages before He came; but in the fullness of the time, He did come. The Church may have waited long, so long that many have lost the vision and the hope. But in the fullness of the time He will Come as He said.  (John 14:3; Acts 1:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:16; Revelation 1:7) 

VI. They were Joyful in the Spirit of God. They had the "joy of the Holy Spirit" (v. 6). With the Word of God in their hearts, and this glorious prospect before their eyes, and the power of the Spirit resting on them, their service was not a burdensome task, but a happy privilege and a growing delight. This was characteristic of the first Church members. "They were filled with joy, and with the Holy Spirit." (Acts 13:52) "How are the mighty fallen?" 

VII. They were Examples to Others. "You were examples to all that believe" (v. 7). This was certainly a prosperous Church, although there is nothing said regarding their financial position, no reference to their "Annual Balance Sheet." But their faith in God was known everywhere (v. 8), and the influence of their missionary enthusiasm, in sounding forth the Word of God, had been felt throughout Macedonia and Greece. They honored Christ as the Head of the Church, and they were honored by Him in doing things worthy of His great Name. 

This is what the Church of Christ should do. This is what every Church true to the Word of God is; and this is what every Christian should be an encouraging example to others. "Believe, and you shall see."

Comforting Words ~ 1 Thessalonians 4:18!!

There is much food for thought in these verses, closing with this exhortation: "Wherefore, comfort one another with these words" (v 18). There is comfort here concerning:

I. The Second Advent. "The Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven" (v. 16) The Lord does not promise to send death, or any other messenger, to take His Bride home. He is coming Himself for her. It is "this same Jesus, which was taken up into Heaven, that is coming in like manner as He was seen to go" (Acts 1:11); and "they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of Heaven with power and great glory" (Matthew 24:30). What a comforting hope this is in these "perilous times." 

II. Our Departed Friends. We are not to be in ignorance about them, nor to be in sorrow for them, for we believe that Jesus rose again, and that when He comes He will bring them with Him (vv. 13, 14), for in spirit they are with Him now (2 Corinthians 5:8) It is the "dead in Christ" who will rise first (v. 16). This rising means the putting on of the incorruptible body, being changed into His resurrection image. They shall lose nothing by being put to sleep before the Coming of the Lord (1 Corinthians 15:52). For we who are alive at the Coming of the Lord shall have no precedence over those who have gone to sleep (v. 15). Comforting words indeed. 

III. The Living Saints. "Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air" (v 17). We are assured, as God's people, that all shall not die before He Comes. "We shall not all sleep (die), but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the sound of His last trumpet" (1 Corinthians 1 51, 52). When all in every age who have been put to sleep in Jesus have been raised and clothed with immortality, and when all the believers who are alive on the earth, when He comes, are changed in a moment and caught up together with them. What a host of ransomed souls. "A multitude whom no man can number" Tell me, will any man say on that day that the Church of God has been a failure? "He shall see of the travail of His soul and shall be satisfied." "Comfort one another with these words" (v. 18). 



IV. The Place of Reunion. "Caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air" (v. 17). The air is spoken of as the sphere of Satan's stronghold. He is called "the prince of the power of the air, the spirits that are now at work in the hearts of the sons of disobedience" (Ephesians 2:2). Does it mean that the transfiguration and reunion of all Christ's redeemed ones will take place right in the heart of Satan's territory? What a triumph this would be for "The Lamb that was slain," and for all those who all their lives were warring against the prince of darkness? And what a shameful defeat for the Devil. "I saw Satan fall like lightning from Heaven" (Luke 10:18). V. Our Final Position. "And so shall we ever be with the Lord" (v. 17). Saved by Him. Made like Him. Then forever with Him. 

He has gone to prepare a place for His Church in the coming Kingdom. He will come again and receive it unto "Himself, that where He is, there shall the bride be also (John 14:3). Then the Bridegroom's prayer will be gloriously answered. "Father, I will that they also whom You have given Me be with Me where I am; that They may behold My glory" (John 17:24); and be "forever with the Lord." Earth's greatest blessing is to find Him. Heaven's greatest honor is to be forever with Him. This honor has all the saints.

We Really Need Very Little

Those who seek the Lord may be sick, or poor, or tried, in a variety of ways; but the Lord will send them supplies, OR give them the grace of contentment, so that they shall not lack any good thing. But how many mistake wishes for needs! And while the Lord has promised to supply all His people's needs. He has nowhere promised to gratify all their wishes. We really need very little. 

Therefore, the apostle says, "If we have food and clothing, we will be content with that!" (1 Timothy 6:8)   And again, "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said: Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." (Hebrews 13:5)   "They shall not lack any good thing." That is, they shall not lack whatever is really good for them at the time, and under the circumstances. 


Whatever will promote their holiness and happiness, shall certainly be conveyed to them. Those who seek the Lord are sure of necessary supplies, for four reasons: 

First, the Lord is ABLE to supply them. "The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof." (Psalm 24:1)  He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we can ask or think! (Ephesians 3:20)

Second, the Lord DESIRES to supply them. "Like as a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust." (Psalm 103:13-14)

Third, the Lord has PROMISED to supply them. "The Lord God is a sun and shield, the Lord will give grace and glory. No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly." (Psalm 84:11)  "My God shall supply all your needs, according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19)

Fourth, the Lord ALWAYS HAS supplied them. Look at Jacob, at David and at all who have already arrived in glory. If the question, put by the Lord Jesus, to His disciples when they returned from their missionary tour on which He sent them without purse or bag, was put to them: "Have you lacked anything?" Every one of them would readily answer, "Nothing, Lord!" (Luke 22:35)

God's True Grace

But if we attend to what the Bible says of grace, we shall discover that the True Grace of God is different from what man conceives. Instead of its being an enemy to holiness grace is the root on which holiness grows, the fountain from which holiness springs, and the principle that produces holiness in the heart. 

True grace brings home the Word with power, conviction, and demonstration to the soul! Acts 14:3 

True grace works faith in the hearts of poor sinners, who are said "to believe through grace!" Acts 18:27 

True grace calls its objects out of a state of nature, sin, and rebellion against God and teaches them to pray, and mourn before the Lord! Galatians 1:15; Zechariah 12:10 

True grace makes obedient to the faith and leads the soul to receive "grace upon grace" out of the fullness of Jesus! Romans 1:5; John 1:16 

True grace destroys the love and dominion of sin and leads us from the law to the gospel! Romans 6:14 

True grace brings home a sense of pardon to the soul and imparts everlasting consolation! Ephesians 1:7; 2 Thessalonians 2:16 

True grace removes condemnation, and justifies us freely, fully, and eternally! Romans 3:24; Titus 3:7 

True grace strengthens, supports, and carries the Christian through all his conflicts, tribulations, and trials! 2 Corinthians 12:9 

True grace builds up and establishes its possessor in truth, in faith, and in love! Acts 20:32; Hebrews 13:9 

True grace leads to holy, scriptural, and consistent practice! Titus 2:11-15 

True grace will make a man labor for God and the good of immortal souls! 1 Corinthians 15:10 

True grace will regulate his lifestyle according to gospel precepts! 2 Corinthians 1:12 

True grace will make him generous and liberal in the Lord's cause, and to the poor! 2 Corinthians 8:1-7; 9:6-14 

True grace flows in abundance, saves all its objects, and raises them to reign in life! Romans 5:17; Ephesians 2:6-8 

True grace is always a gift and is invariably free! Romans 11:6; Ephesians 4:7 

True grace communicates more and more to its possessor, until the victory and conquest is complete! James 4:6 

The man that possesses the True Grace of God and is living under its sacred influence mourns over his state as a sinner, longs for perfection as a believer, and cannot be perfectly happy until purged from all pollution.

O The Wonders Couched in Electing Love!

Did the shepherd prize his flock? God calls His people, "His flock, His beautiful flock." Does the miser prize his wealth? God says of His people, "You shall be a special treasure unto Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine." Does the prince prize his jewels? God says of His people, "They shall be Mine, in that day when I make up My jewels!" (Malachi 3:17) Does the bridegroom prize his beloved and dearly purchased bride? It is written, "As the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you!" (Isaiah 62:5) Does the reigning monarch prize his crown? God has said, "You shall be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God."  (Isaiah 62:3)

What wondrous love, such expressions as these represent! How precious must the Lord's people be to Him! Truly they are His special treasure! God chose them to be special unto Himself. He chose them out from among others. He chose them in preference to others. He chose them out from others, on purpose that they may be a special people unto Himself. And in so doing, He acted FREELY. It was not on account of anything He saw in them, or on account of anything He expected from them; but in the exercise of His most free and holy sovereignty, He chose them to participate in the glory of His Son! In choosing them, He acted also DELIBERATELY. It was no hasty choice. His thoughts had been eternally filled with them. His heart had been eternally set upon them. 

Therefore, He chose them in Christ before the foundation of the world! In choosing them, He acted WISELY, as He really desired to have them. For each one of them is ready to confess that if God had not chosen them, that they would never have chosen Him! The nature regulates the choice; and as our nature is carnal and impure, we would never have chosen God who is spiritual and holy. His choice was just an early expression of His LOVE. The love which chose them, would do anything for them, and give anything to them! 

Therefore, God spared not His own Son but delivered Him up for them all; and in so doing, gave them the assurance that He will also freely give them all things in Christ. O the wonders couched in electing love! This act of choosing such creatures as we are, to be a special people unto Himself, displays such grace, such condescension, such infinite wisdom and love!

In Times of Trouble....

With WHOM will God be in times of trouble? There are four characteristic marks in the context by which the heirs of this promise may be known.

First, They know the Lord's name. The Spirit has taught it to them. They have learned it from the Bible. They have so learned it as to trust in it. It is their strong tower. Their powerful plea. The object of their faith, and the subject of their meditation.

Second, They have set their love upon God. He has been revealed to them as lovely. They have seen him in Jesus. His love has been shed abroad in their hearts. They love him for what he has done for them; for what he has conferred upon them; for what he has promised them; and because he is altogether lovely.

Third, They have made the Lord their refuge and their habitation. He is to them what the place of safety is to the trembling dove; what the commodious, comfortable, and well-stored dwelling is to the happy inhabitant. They dwell in God by faith. They dwell with God in holy fellowship.

Fourth, They dwell in the secret or in secret with the Most High. He is with them. They walk with him; pour out their hearts before him; and enjoy free communion with him.

He will be with them.

"The Spirit of Grace"

Grace is one of the most beautiful words in God's Book. The very sound of it is musical to the believer who understands it. It just meets our case, for it tells us that God is inclined to be favorable unto us; more, that he is prepared to shower down the richest blessings upon us; and that what he gives he gives freely, from the love of his own heart. 

Grace is favor shown to the unworthy, without any cause or reason but what is found in God's own bosom. Grace never looks outside of itself for a motive but is its own motive. It dwells in all its fullness in Jesus and is the glory of the gospel scheme. 

But we are not going to dwell upon grace itself but to fix the eye upon the Holy Spirit, as called, "the Spirit of grace." The Spirit is the gift of God's grace one of its greatest gifts. Indeed, it has no greater. Grace gave Jesus, and it gives the Holy Spirit; these gifts are equal in value and importance, as they are equal in nature, power, and glory. Without Jesus, we could have no deliverance from wrath, or title to Heaven; and without the Holy Spirit, we would never realize deliverance or be made fit for glory. 

The Father promised the Spirit to his Son, and the Son bestows the Spirit upon his church, and makes us new creatures in Christ Jesus. The Father laid up our fortune in Jesus; Jesus has preserved for us all that the Father entrusted to him; but it is the Holy Spirit who makes known to us the wealth which our heavenly Father has laid up for us and conveys the foretastes and pledges of it into our souls. Holy and blessed Spirit, daily bring down into our souls fresh and fuller supplies of grace from the Father and the Son!

The Important Event!!

The Christian should be prepared for everything that occurs. He is forewarned that he may be forearmed. Being in union with Christ, living in communion with God, resting upon the precious promises, and looking forward to the glorious prospects of the Church he should always be hopeful, if he cannot be happy. The Master's word to his disciples, when predicting the destruction of Jerusalem, the signs of his coming, and the end of the age, is applicable to him, "Therefore you also ready, for in such an hour as you think not, the Son of Man will come!" 

THE IMPORTANT EVENT. The coming of the Son of Man. This is the great prospective event of the world. Jesus came once to put away our sins and he will come the second time to claim our persons and complete our salvation. 

He will come personally, even as he went up into Heaven. He will come gloriously, in unequaled grandeur and splendor. He will come suddenly, as a thief in the night. When least expected by the world, giving little or no warning, he will come and all his holy angels with him. He comes, or sends for us, by death, and calls us personally to appear before him, to enter into his glory, and he sometimes sends for his people suddenly, giving them little or no warning. Whether therefore he comes personally in his glory or sends for us by death he requires us to be ready. 

If the master of the house knew when the thief would come, he would watch and prepare for him and not allow him to rob him of his property. So, we knowing that the Lord will come, or death will come but not knowing when, we should watch, and wait, and be prepared for the event. Death will end all our opportunities, either to secure salvation, wash our robes and make them white in the blood of the Lamb, or do good to our fellowmen. 

How solemn is death! How glorious will the coming of the Son of Man be! O to be prepared, to be quite ready, either to depart and be with Christ, or to welcome the descent of our Lord in the air, when he comes with the clouds of Heaven, in power and great glory!

O What a Dwelling!!

Many profess the Christian religion, who are not really Christians! They are strangers to the new birth. They have never passed from death unto life. Their opinions perhaps are changed, but their hearts remain just as they were. Their lives may be moral, but their hearts are not spiritual. They are enemies to God, though they profess to be His friends! They are rebels against the government of Jesus, while they profess to be His loyal subjects. Commending the Savior with their lips, they withhold their heart from Him. In professing Christ, they cry, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" But by living in sin, they cry, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!" They are not struggling with sin but sternly attached to sin! 

It is not weakness which causes their conduct, but inveterate wickedness! They are hypocrites, that is, they wear a mask! They pretend to be what they well know they are not. With their mouths they show much love to Christ, but their hearts go after their lusts! Reader, it is a dreadful thing to be a hypocrite; to be found among the Lord's people, while not really of them; to profess Christ, and not to possess Christ!

You may deceive men, but you cannot deceive God! You may be bold and fearless now, but when God shall unmask you and expose the nakedness of your soul, then you will be afraid; fearfulness and trembling will seize upon you suddenly! If you are indulging in any known sin, under a profession of religion then you are a 'sinner in Zion', and your state is most dangerous!

At Work!!

Nothing is too hard for God, no change in providence however it may appear improbable, or impossible to us. He could bring water out of the flinty rock. He could supply quail to satisfy the needs and gratify the lusts of His people in the desert. He could feed Elijah for twelve months by ravens, and for two years and a half more, by a handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in the widow's cruse. He could inundate Samaria with plenty in the midst of famine and fearful desolation. 

If He wills it the fire shall not burn the three Hebrew youths, nor the lions injure Daniel, nor death hold Lazarus in the tomb. What He has done He can do; for He is the same. And if necessary for the glory of His name He will do it, for He will not allow His name to be polluted. 

"Providence" is simply God at work at work for the accomplishment of His decrees, the fulfillment of His promises, the manifestation of His character, and the present and eternal welfare of His people. He can give whatever we need, do whatever we need, and glorify Himself in giving to us, and working for us!

Christ ~ The Incarnate Word

The Lord Jesus Christ assumed our nature, that He might sympathize with us in our sorrows; obtain our everlasting deliverance from sin, Satan, and Hell; and supply all our needs according to His glorious riches. (Philippians 4:19) He was rich yet for our sakes He became poor that we, through His poverty, might be rich. Unparalleled benevolence! (2 Corinthians 8:9) Unexampled love! Savior Jesus! fill us with wonder, gratitude, and love! He was made flesh; He wrapped His Godhead in a human form; He became one with us, and one of us that we might be one with Him, and one with the Father and the Holy Spirit through Him. 

He dwelt among His disciples, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14) Full of truth to inform their judgments; full of grace to sanctify their hearts. He had truth to delight them, and grace to supply them. He is still full of grace and truth. He has grace to pardon all sin; grace to sanctify your polluted heart; grace to conquer your powerful corruptions; grace to subdue your rebellious will, and to bring every thought into subjection to His own blessed will. He gives freely without money and without price; He gives cheerfully without upbraiding; He gives frequently without complaining. 

Have you been thinking that your attainments are but small, that your evidence are but weak, that your spirituality is questionable? Jesus is full of grace! He is a fountain ever flowing a fountain to which you are welcome, for He says, "If any man thirsts let him come, and take of the fountain of life freely." (John 7:37)

The promises He has made are truth, they flowed from his heart; they express His mind at present; and He will make them good to every seeking soul. The supplies He sends us; the answers He gives us are confirmations of the truth of His word; they are the overflowing's of the grace that is in Him. He delights to bestow; He rejoices to impart; He cannot deny what He has promised. He will consult your welfare, and perhaps make you wait; but He will not falsify His word and leave you to want. Look at Jesus then, as full of grace, full of truth. You never read of His being full of wrath, full of vengeance, full of indignation; but you do read that He is full of grace, rich in mercy, plenteous in compassion, and waiting to be gracious! 

He wears your nature in Heaven. He is still as kind, as tender, as loving as when He had compassion on the widow of Nain, wept at the grave of Lazarus, or prayed for His cruel murderers. He is Jesus still the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8) changes not, and therefore we are not consumed. He still says, "Look unto me, and be saved, all you end of the earth, for I am God, and there is none else." (Isaiah 45:22)

As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so is the Son of man lifted up; that whoever believes on Him should not perish but have everlasting life. All things are delivered unto Him by His Father and He will use all to protect your person, supply your needs, and carry you safely to the realms of peace. Lord, we adore your boundless grace, The heights and depths unknown, Of pardon, life, and joy, and peace, In your beloved Son! 

Oh, wondrous gift of love divine, Oh source of every good! Jesus, in You what glories shine, how rich your flowing blood! Come, all you are pining, hungry poor, The Savior's bounty taste; Behold a never-failing store for every willing guest. Here shall our every need receive A free and full supply; He has unmeasured bliss to give, and joys that never die!

O For a Thankful Heart!

What tremendous cause we have to be thankful what marvelous reasons we have to be grateful! We are surrounded by mercies, both temporal and spiritual. If we look back, we ought to rejoice that God has chosen us in Christ Jesus before the foundation of the world; He sent His only-begotten Son into the world, to be an atoning sacrifice for our sins; He sent His Holy Spirit into our hearts, to convince us of sin, lead us to Jesus, and make us fit for Heaven! We have . . . His Word in our hands, His grace in our hearts, His mercies in our houses, His Heaven before our eyes! O for a thankful heart! Let us take our poor, hard, ungrateful hearts to Jesus, He can soften them and fill them with gratitude! Let us confess our ingratitude before Him and mourn over our un-thankfulness at His feet. 

O Jesus, grant us a deep sense of our utter unworthiness, and of Your unmerited goodness that our souls may daily praise You with joyful lips! May we live as thankful dependents on Your gracious bounty; as grateful, loving children, before our Father and our God and daily be thankful. Through all eternity, to You, A joyful song I'll raise; But O eternity's too short, to utter all Your praise!

As Your Days — So Shall Your Strength Be!

Here is a precious promise for a trying day! It belongs to every Christian who is traveling to the Celestial City. It provides for every part of life's journey; for every day as each day may require. It is especially suited to the dark days, the wintry days, and the trying days when all our earthly props fail us; the days when our fellow man cannot help us. 

Fellow pilgrim! Are you dispirited, depressed, and cast down? Are you looking back upon the past with sorrow and forward into the future with fear? Cheer up! The Lord will not lay on you more than He will enable you to bear nor will He allow any other to do so. However weak you may feel in yourself, however rough the road you may need to travel, however heavy the burden you may have to carry God will supply you with sufficient strength for the day! He has never allowed you to be crushed yet, though you may have staggered under some heavy burdens. He who has helped you in the past is still your helper today. He will also help you in all the future. "As your days" be they as troublesome as they may "so shall your strength be." Whether your day brings life or death, joy or trial it does not matter. God will send you exactly what you need to pass through it! 

Do not look at your trials, do not dwell on your inability but lay hold on the promises of God and seek His grace to exercise faith in Him. Then let Satan suggest what he pleases, or the flesh object as it may you will be able to say, "I will not fear; for as my day so shall my strength be. He who has promised will also fulfill His promise." Blessed Lord, I praise You for this precious promise! Help, oh, help me to trust in it; and day by day as duty or trials may require enable me to look to You and expect sufficient strength from You!

"My Father"

This is a child's cry! It is full of meaning. It is full of love. It is full of comfort. It is a title which the Lord loves to hear us use! Lord, give us the Spirit of adoption this morning, and let us see and feel, that we are Your children! Believer! To whom will you repair in trouble? To whom will you look in difficulty? To whom will you cry in danger? From whom will you ask when in need? Surely, I hear you say, "My Father!" 

Who speaks to you in the Bible? Who tries you by His providence? Who chastens you with His rod? Who purifies and cleanses you? Who humbles and reproves you? Again, you will say, "My Father!" 

Who supports the world? Who controls the nations? Who chains up Satan? Who comforts the believer? Who pardons the backslider? Again, you reply, "My Father!" Then I exhort you to trust your Father's Word, abide in your father's house, expect from your father's hand, and say in every trial: "I will arise and go to my father!" (Luke 15:18)

Destroyed Nest

Job's nest was very comfortable and appeared to be very secure. It was on high, and not to be easily reached. He knew that death could reach it, but he thought that nothing else would disturb it. His conduct was consistent, his conscience was quiet, God was his Father, and providence was his friend. "I thought: Surely I shall die in my nest!" 

But alas! Suddenly a 'storm' arose, the nest was destroyed, and the poor bird lay bleeding and exposed! No earthly nest is out of danger! Temporal comforts are only lent to us. The higher the tree in which we build, the more exposed we are to the whirlwind and the storm! Here on earth, we have no continuing city. 

In one moment, our fine nest may be devastated! Let us therefore endeavor to leave our matters fully with the Lord and learn to be content with His appointments. We must die! But when, and where, and how--should be left with the Lord. Five minutes after death, it will matter very little whether we died on a bed of down, in a luxurious mansion, and surrounded by kind friends OR as a poor diseased beggar, dying alone in squalor! 

Present comforts may all leave us, and our soft nest may be scattered to the winds, but nothing can disturb our salvation and future glory!

Delight in Jesus!!

Delighting in worldly things, effectually prevents our delighting in God. Therefore, it is often the case, that the Lord strips us of these things, or incapacitates us to enjoy them in order to bring us back to delight in Himself. He delights in His people, and He desires that His people to delight in Him. In order to accomplish this, He has revealed Himself in the most amiable characters, as a Husband, a Friend, a brother, a Savior, a Shepherd, and so forth all on purpose to endear Himself to us! 

Surely if our hearts were right, we would delight in Him on account of His glorious perfections, His unalterable love, the perfect atonement made for our sins, the promises made for our comfort and encouragement, the gift of the Holy Spirit, the communion we are urged to hold with Himself, and the glorious paradise of blessedness set before us, where we shall forever view the unfolding of His glories, enjoy the riches of His grace, and drink of the river of His pleasures! 

Sick Christian, Jesus bids you to delight in Him! Delight in Him as your Savior, Friend, and Brother! Delight in His person and glories! Delight in His perfect work! Delight in His glorious fullness! Delight in your salvation in Him, union to Him, and claim upon Him. Oh, delight in Jesus!

Peaceful Sleep

David looked above circumstances to his God. He may have to lie in the open field, or in the cleft of the rock, exposed to ravenous beasts, or to more ravenous men; but he would lie down in peace, and sleep for he knew that safety is of the Lord. "He gives his beloved sleep." 

How many this night will be kept awake, by pain, or by nervous fears, or watching by the bedside of the sick or dying or waiting for the return of absent relatives or friends! How much anxiety, and fear, and pain, will be experienced this night by thousands of the Lord's people! But as for me, favored by a gracious providence, comforted with the sense of the presence of my God, and persuaded of my saving interest in his precious promises I will both lie down and sleep in peace, persuaded that my heavenly Father will watch beside my pillow, and keep me safe. 

Omnipresent God, my soul confides in you! I lay me down tonight as in your presence, to sleep as beneath your eye. May my sleep be peaceful, and my repose refreshing and sweet. Let my exhausted energies be renewed. Let my person and property be kept safely. And in the morning, let me awake realizing your presence, assured of your love, and enjoying your paternal smile. 

How many nights, have you kept me safely! With how many mercies, have you crowned my lot! For these favors I bless you and praise your glorious name. And now, relying on the atoning blood of your Son Jesus, as savingly invested with his glorious righteousness, and as accepted in your presence through him I enjoy peace. And with peace in my conscience, at peace with you and all your creatures, I lay me down and sleep.

Precious Psalm

This most precious Psalm has been a source of blessing to many of the Lord's people. It is in general the language of one deeply taught of God, living in close communion with God, and therefore exercising strong confidence in God. Rising above second causes, God is seen working, supplying, and making his people happy. The most terrible convulsions are supposed but faith remains firm. 

An invitation to behold the works of God is given, especially his victories over his warlike foes. Then the Lord himself interposes, he appears in his majesty, he speaks with authority, he commands silence, he says, "Be still!" He will be known, acknowledged, and exalted. His glory shall cover the heavens, and the earth shall be filled with his praise. Let us hear God speak and seek grace to profit by his words.

Our Glorious God!!

The more we have to do with man, the more his littleness, fickleness and emptiness appear. But the more we read, think or have to do with God, the more His greatness, majesty and infinite sufficiency is discovered! He proclaims Himself, "the Great and Mighty God, the Lord Almighty is His name great in counsel and mighty in work!" (Jeremiah 32:18-19) 

Infinity, omnipotence and eternity find a home and a center only in Him. "His Greatness is unsearchable!" (Psalm 145:3) There is more in the works of His hands, than even the angels have ever discovered! There is more in the words of His mouth, than mortals ever conceived. His glory is great unto and above the heavens. "Behold your God!" (Isaiah 40:9)  

Look at His goodness. It runs an endless circuit supplying millions and supporting all created existences. O how great is His goodness! Look at His grace. Saving innumerable multitudes from Hell; saving them at the greatest expense, in the freest possible way; saving them to the highest honor and greatest glory! O the exceeding riches of His grace! 

Look at His judgments. He sweeps the ancient world with His broom of destruction! He makes the cities of the plain into a Hell on earth! He overthrows Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea! He encaverns Korah, Dathan, Abiram and their households in the belly of the earth! 


O if we could look into Hell or listen for a moment at the door of the bottomless pit how dreadful would His judgments appear! We cannot fathom them, but we must exclaim with the apostle, "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out!" (Romans 11:33)

Look at His power. He speaks a world into existence, sustains it, supports every creature upon it and perhaps millions of worlds beside it. All these things are alike easy for Him. Difficulty is with man not with God. "Ah Lord God! Behold, you have made the Heaven and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for You!" (Jeremiah 32:17)

Look at His wisdom. It is infinite. Read it in creation's ponderous folio! Then turn to the glorious plan of grace. Here is a display of "the manifold wisdom of God." (Ephesians 3:9-10)

Angels are learning it, and we can scarcely make out its alphabet at present! But we have God for our teacher, eternity for our duration, and Heaven for the place where we shall fully learn the greatness of the wisdom of God. Look at His holiness. It is so bright that no mortal eye has seen or can see it in its unveiled glory! "Now we see but a poor reflection!" (1 Corinthians 13:12)

We have but some faint discoveries, for He is glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, constantly doing wonders! Look at His mercy. It is a boundless ocean without bottom, bank or shore! The manifestations of mercy are innumerable! The proofs of His mercy are like mountains piled on mountains, reaching to the heavens! The overflowing of His mercy has supplied the needs of unnumbered multitudes. "Who is so great a God as our God?" He is a mighty and awesome God, yet so glorious and kind that the feeblest petitioner need not fear!
