Day of Pentecost

Be filled with the Holy Ghost!

Acts 2:1-4 ... And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

"The Barber"

Dear Sir,

As it respects 'The Barber," I can speak with confidence. It was the first book that ever was attended with light, as well as power, to show me the desperate condition I was in. I had been convicted, and I believe it was the Spirit of God that convicted me; yet I had not light to understand what it meant; and I went on in misery and vexation eighteen years, until this book (whoever likes or dislikes it) fell into my hands.

I always determined never to read Mr. Huntington's controversial books, lest I should be prejudiced against his preaching; because I was told they were cruel and abusive, and written in a bad spirit. But one night, walking along Oxford Street, I thought I would turn into a bookshop and ask if they had any of Mr. Huntington's works. They replied that they had The Barber and another, both of which I bought, and immediately read. Until then I knew nothing of the spider's web I had been weaving; but that book plainly showed me the difference between the letter and the spirit, the form of godliness and the power.

God by it so entangled me with my own deceiving's, that I was forced to cry out, "Lord, save me, or I perish." Let who will find fault with The Barber or his bad spirit, I will thank God that he should condescend to send that book with such power to my heart and will pray that the author may be established in his own soul and blessed in all his labors.

 Yours faithfully, James Bourne

The Holy Spirit ~

The Spirit is given to supply the Savior's absence, and to apply to our souls the redemption finished on Calvary. It is His blessed work to glorify Jesus to testify of Him. Through His power we are renewed and sanctified, filled 'with all joy and peace in believing,' and 'abound in hope' of a blissful immortality.

The Spirit reveals the Savior to our souls in a manner that renders Him exceedingly precious in our estimation. He shows us His excellence, the perfections of His divine nature, as the brightness of the Father's glory His power, as the Creator of all things, His wisdom, His immutability, His eternity!

The Spirit exhibits to us the amazing love of Jesus to sinners, the wonders of His incarnation, the amiableness of His life on earth, the spotless purity of His character, the unparalleled sufferings of His life, the fruits of His death, resurrection, ascension and intercession!

The Spirit shows us His suitableness to our needs as sinners. He points us to Calvary, and whispers in our ears the cheering truth that we have redemption through the blood of Jesus, even the forgiveness of sins!

The Spirit comforts us amid all the tribulations of earth: by assuring us that our trials are but light and momentary, by perfecting His strength in our weakness, by bringing to our remembrance the many precious words of the Lord Jesus, by communicating to us the things of God, by lifting our hearts above the world, and by pointing us to a home of rest and glory beyond the skies where tribulation, and anguish, and death, never come!

Yes, by His divine power thus operating on our minds, He enables us to look far beyond the present. He direct faith's far-reaching eye to our Father's house, and the fountains of immortal life, flowing through those sweet fields beyond the swelling flood the sight of which makes us long to be there, that we may see Jesus as He is, and taste His goodness on the shores of the promised land!

[David Harsha]

John 14:26 ...  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Conviction...

You are in a very dangerous place if you lose the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

God is most angry with someone when He no longer corrects them.

Repent.

Psalm 7:11 ... God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.

Romans 1:28 ...  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Job 4:9 ... By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.

Deuteronomy 31:17 ... Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?

This is A Blessed Life!!

When the Holy Spirit takes of the things of Christ and preaches them to the heart, oh, what a sweet peace follows! The believer then finds himself saved from all the miseries of sin and entitled to all the blessings of eternal glory. Being thus persuaded of his safety by believing in the sin-atoning death of our Great High Priest, the Holy Spirit then teaches him how to live upon Christ, and how to make use of Christ's fullness.

On our learning this lesson, depends on our comforting walk heavenward. For Christ does not give us a stock of grace and expect us to improve it by being faithful to grace given. No, no, that is not His way. Our souls must depend upon Him, just as our bodies do upon the elements of this world. We must live by faith in Jesus and be every moment receiving grace upon grace out of His fullness. And this is our happiness to have all in Christ!

A beggar in myself, but rich with unsearchable eternal riches in Him. Ignorant still in myself but led and taught by His unerring wisdom. A sinner still but saved by His blood and righteousness. Weak and helpless still but kept by His Almighty love. Nothing but sorrow in myself, nothing but joy in Him.

Oh, this is a blessed life! No tongue can tell what a Heaven it is, thus, to live by faith in the Son of God. Thanks be to Him, that I do know a little of it. Surely, I could not have thought, some years ago, that there was such a Heaven upon earth as I now find.

[William Romaine]

Galatians 2:20 ...  I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Jesus Blood Applied By The Holy Spirit

There is a perpetual proneness to seek our fruitfulness from anything but a close, spiritual, and constant dealing with the cross of Jesus. But as well might we expect the earth to clothe itself with verdure, or the tree to blossom, and the blossom ripen into fruit, without the sun's genial warmth as to look for fruitfulness in a regenerate soul, without a constant dealing with the Lord Jesus Christ.  For just what the sun is to the kingdom of nature, Jesus the Sun of righteousness is to the kingdom of grace the blessed source of all its verdure, fragrance, and fruitfulness.

Then, let all your expectations be centered here. No real good can come to you, no healing to your spirit, no fruitfulness to your soul, from a perpetual living upon convictions of sin, legal fears, or transient joys the Divine life can derive no nourishment from these. But live upon the atoning blood of Jesus here is the fatness of your soul found. This is that which heals the wound, wins the heart, and hushes to repose every fear of condemnation. This is that which enables a poor sinner to look fully at God feeling that justice, holiness, truth, and every Divine perfection are on his side.

It is the blood of Jesus, applied by the Spirit which moistens each fiber of the root of holiness in the soul, and is productive of its fruitfulness. This is that which sends the warm current of life through every part of the regenerate man, quickening the pulse of love, and imparting a healthy and vigorous power to every act of obedience. And when the spiritual seasons change for it is not always spring-time with the soul of a child of God; when the summer's sun withers, or the autumnal blast scatters the leaves, and winter's fiercer storm beats upon the smitten bough then the blood and righteousness of Christ, lived upon, loved, and cherished will yet sustain the Divine life in the soul, and in due season the spring blossom and the summer fruit shall again appear, proving that the Divine life of a believer is "hid with Christ in God." (Colossians 3:3)

Then shall be said of you, as was said of the church by her Beloved: "Look, the winter is past, and the rains are over and gone. The flowers are springing up, the season of singing birds has come, and the cooing of turtledoves fills the air. The fig trees are forming young fruit, and the fragrant grapevines are blossoming. Rise up, My darling! Come away with Me, My fair one!" (Song of Solomon 2:10)

Then let your heart respond, "Awake, north wind! Rise up, south wind! Blow on my garden and spread its fragrance all around. Come into Your garden, my Beloved taste its finest fruits!"

[Octavius Winslow]

Hebrews 9:14 ... How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

The Error of Textualism

The doctrine of the inability of the human mind to understand divine teaching, and the need for divine illumination, is so fully developed in the New Testament, that it is nothing short of astonishing that we should have gone so far astray concerning the whole issue. Evangelicalism has stood aloof from Liberalism in self-conscious superiority; and has on its own part fallen into the error of textualism, which is simply orthodoxy without the Holy Spirit.

Everywhere among Conservatives we find people who are Bible-taught, but not Spirit-taught. They conceive truth to be something which they can grasp with the mind. If a man holds to the fundamentals of the Christian faith, then he is thought to possess divine truth. But that is an incorrect assumption. The Bible is a supernatural book and can be understood only by supernatural aid!

Conservative Christians in this day are stumbling over this truth. We need to re-examine the whole thing. We need to learn that truth consists not in correct doctrine, but in correct doctrine plus the inward enlightenment of the Holy Spirit. A re-preachment of this vital truth could result in a fresh breath from God upon a stale and suffocating orthodoxy.

Most Christians see Bible knowledge as something to be stored away in the mind, along with an inert mass of other facts. The modern scientist has lost God, amid the wonders of His world. And we Christians are in real danger of losing God, amid the wonders of His Word! Scripture truths must be experienced, before we can really know them.

Prayer: "Lord, I do believe in the authority of the Scriptures, and thank You for that foundation of truth. But I need to remember that even the inspired text is not alive, until the Holy Spirit takes it and enlightens the recipients. May the Spirit indeed take what I teach and embed it in the hearts and minds of my hearers. Amen."

The Author!

The Holy Spirit is the author of the great work of regeneration. He takes up His abode in the renewed heart, as His temple. He dwells in us and shall be with us. Jesus does all for us, in our justification; and the Holy Spirit does all in us, for our sanctification.

The Holy Spirit is the source of all holy desires, consistent purposes and good works. There is no good thing in us, but what He produces. He dwells within us as the Teacher, the Comforter and the Advocate of the soul. He leads us into truth, against Satan, and to labor for God. He warns us of evil, directs us to Jesus, and applies the blessings of salvation to our souls. He is in us as a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Without the Holy Spirit there is not, there cannot be, genuine religion; for He is its author, guardian, and guide. To Him we are indebted for every good desire, for every holy thought, for every good word, and for every fruitful work. He works in us to will and to do of His own good pleasure. Every tear of penitence, every contrite sigh, every fervent prayer, every ray of spiritual light, every holy emotion toward God is from the Holy Spirit. If He left us our graces would soon wither, fade and die.

When we grieve Him our comforts decline, our evidence is beclouded, and our hands wax feeble. But if we sow to the Spirit, if we walk in the Spirit, if we aim in all things to please Him, then our souls are vigorous, our graces are lively, and we are enabled to find our joy in God.

[James Smith]

Walk in The Spirit!!

Rich would the blessings of this day be, if we were filled with the Holy Spirit. The consequences of this sacred filling of the soul, would be impossible to overestimate. Life, comfort, light, purity, power, peace; and many other precious blessings are inseparable from the Spirit's gracious presence. As sacred oil, He anoints the head of the believer, sets him apart to the priesthood of saints, and gives him grace to execute his duties aright. As the only truly purifying water, He cleanses us from the power of sin and sanctifies us unto holiness, working in us to will and to do of the Lord's good pleasure.

As the holy light, He reveals the Lord Jesus to us, and guides us in the way of righteousness. Enlightened by His pure celestial ray, we are no longer walk in darkness, but in the light of Scripture truth. As purifying fire, He both purges us from dross, and sets our consecrated nature ablaze. He is the sacrificial flame by which we are enabled to offer our whole souls as a living sacrifice unto God. As heavenly dew, He removes our barrenness and nourishes our lives.

O that He would drop from above upon us at this early hour! Such morning dew would be a sweet commencement for the day. As the heavenly Dove, with wings of peaceful love, He broods over the souls of believers; and as a Comforter He dispels the cares and doubts which mar the peace of His beloved ones. He descends upon His chosen people, and bears witness to their sonship by working in them a filial spirit by which they cry Abba, Father! As the wind, He brings the breath of spiritual life to men. He performs the quickening operations by which the spiritual creation is animated and sustained. O that we might feel the Spirit's presence and influence this day and every day!

Who was Jenny Evans Moore?

Jenny Evans Moore was a woman in attendance at William J Seymour's revival. This was before Azusa Street. She lived across the street from the family who was housing the traveling preacher. Jenny was filled with Holy Spirit at the house on Bonnie Brae. She was one of the first seven people to be receive them baptism of fire.

What was the evidence? When Jenny was filled with the Holy Ghost, she sat down at the piano in the front room of the house on Bonnie Brae and played worship. She played it perfectly. Multiple songs. She played all day. She sang one of those songs - over and over - each time in a different language. She did this 6 times, in 6 different languages. The six languages were French, Spanish, Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Hindustani.

Jenny had never played the piano before, not a day in her life. Nor did she know any languages other than English. She went on to become the wife of William J Seymour and a great Pentecostal evangelist in her day.

We as believers need to see beyond the veil. Remove anything that keeps us remaining in the old way of thinking; and walk into the NEW!

I Have a Savior!!

My soul, meditate for a few moments on what Jesus is to you, and what Jesus has done for you. Look back and glance at the circumstances in which He found you, and the deliverance which He wrought for you.

 1. The CIRCUMSTANCES in which Jesus found you. Jesus found me out of the way. God by His law had marked out a way in which His creatures should walk, its character was holiness, and its end His glory. But all we like sheep had gone astray, we had turned everyone to his own way. We were in the path of death and destruction, and on the way to Hell! We were not only out of the way, but we were enslaved. We were  slaves of sin, the drudges of the world, and led captive by the Devil at his will. We were diseased, as well as enslaved. We were leprous from head to foot. We had the plague of the heart! The whole head was sick, and the whole heart was faint. We were imprisoned, as well as diseased. We were shut up in unbelief and sin. Our cell was cold and damp, dark and narrow, and our imprisonment was not merely for a few years, it was forever! We were dead, though still conscious, and to some things alive. Dead in trespasses and sins! In this state we were, and we loved it well. We neither desired, nor sought deliverance. Left to ourselves . . . we would have wandered on in darkness, until we had perished in our sins; we would have continued the slaves of sin and Satan forever; our disease would have preyed upon our vitals to all eternity; our prison walls would have enclosed us still; we would have remained dead in sin, we would have suffered all the pangs of damnation forever!

 2. The DELIVERANCE which Jesus wrought for you. Jesus saved me! He saved me from the roaring lion, who goes about seeking to devour me! He saved me from my raging lusts, so that sin shall not have dominion over me! He saved me from righteous wrath, and I, being justified by His blood, shall be saved from wrath through Him! He saved me from death, the 'king of terrors,' depriving the monster of his sting, and giving me the victory over him! He has also saved me from the flaming furnace of Hell, from that lake of fire, and those floods of flame in which the lost must welter forever!

3.  See the cause of my happiness, I have a Savior! A Savior who is divine. A Savior who has ever loved me. A Savior who lived, labored, and died for me. A Savior who pleads for me before the throne of His Father. A Savior who is in His Father's house, preparing a place for me. A Savior who will soon come and receive me to Himself, that so I may be forever with Him! Yes, I have a Savior, one who watches over me, walks through the wilderness with me, and rejoices to do me good.

Reader, have you a Savior? Can you use these two precious words, "My Savior"? Have you realized that you were lost? Have you fled to His cross? Have you fallen into His arms? Have you been cleansed by His blood, and clothed in His righteousness? Do you possess His Holy Spirit? Make sure work, O make sure work! Eternity is just at hand! Death is coming! Judgment follows! And then, an eternity of happiness or woe! Your eternal all depends on having Jesus for your Savior! No one can save you but Jesus. No one can support you in sickness, comfort you in death, or give you victory over the grave, but Jesus!

[James Smith]

Titus 3:4-5 ... But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

In The End Times ....

When the Word of God says, ‘In the end times deceivers will get worse and worse. Deceiving and being deceived’ --- this is not the time to be heeding the voices of the world or government. This is the time to listen to the only 100% TRUSTWORTHY SOURCE, The Holy Spirit.

Genuine Evidence

The genuine evidence of the Holy Spirit’s influence in a person’s life is not material prosperity, mindless emotionalism, or supposed miracles. Rather, it is sanctification: the believer’s growth in spiritual maturity, practical holiness, and Christlikeness through the power and leading of the Holy Spirit (as He applies biblical truth to the hearts of His saints). A true work of the Spirit convicts the heart of sin, combats worldly lusts, and cultivates spiritual fruit in the lives of God’s people.

"The Lord is One"

Q: Do you Christian's worship three Gods, or just one? I've heard about God the Father and God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, but doesn't that mean you believe in three Gods? I've always wondered about this.

A: No, Christians don’t worship three Gods; there is only one God, and He alone is the One we worship and serve. When Jesus was asked which of the commandments was most important, He replied, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one” (Mark 12:29).

The Bible does tell us, however, that God has shown Himself to us in three distinct ways. First, He has shown us that He is our Father. Like our earthly fathers (but in a far greater way), He brought us into being, and He loves us and protects us and takes care of us. The Bible says, “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him” (Psalm 103:13). But God also has shown Himself to us in the person of Jesus Christ, who was God in human flesh and came to earth for a distinct reason: to make it possible for us to be with Him in heaven forever. Our sins separate us from God but by His death on the cross, Jesus Christ became the complete sacrifice for our sins.

God also comes to us in a third way by His Holy Spirit, who lives within us when we put our faith and trust in Christ. Just as a clover has three leaves and yet is still one clover, so God has three “personalities” and yet is still one God. And through each of these God shows His love for us. May you respond to His love by giving your life to Him, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Believers.

Believers are separated from the world by the effectual working of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit calls them out from the world, and separates them as effectually as if a wall were built between them and it.

He puts in them new hearts, new minds, new tastes, new desires, new sorrows, new joys, new wishes, new pleasures, new longings. He gives them new eyes, new ears, new affections, new opinions. He makes them new creatures.

They are born again and with a new birth they begin a new existence. Mighty indeed is the transforming power of the Spirit!

Old Revelation.

God, by His Spirit, brings old truth home to the heart, gives new light to our eyes, and causes the Word to exercise new power over us; but He reveals no new facts, and He utters no words in any man's ears concerning his condition and state. We must be content with the old revelation and with the life and power and force with which the Holy Spirit brings it to the heart. Neither must any of us seek to have any additional revelation, for that would imply that the Scriptures are incomplete.

[Charles H. Spurgeon]

John 17:17 ...  Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

One School.

All who have the Spirit are taught by Him. He is called in Scripture, "The Spirit of wisdom and revelation." It was the promise of the Lord Jesus, "He shall teach you all things." "He shall guide you into all truth." We are all by nature ignorant of spiritual truth. "The natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God, they are foolishness to him."

Our eyes are blinded. We neither know God, nor Christ, nor ourselves, nor the world, nor sin, nor Heaven, nor Hell as we ought. We see everything under false colors. The Spirit alters entirely this state of things. He opens the eyes of our understandings. He illumines us. He calls us out of darkness into marvelous light. He takes away the veil. He shines into our hearts, and makes us see things as they really are!

No wonder that all true Christians are so remarkably agreed upon the essentials of true religion! The reason is, that they have all learned in one school, the school of the Holy Spirit. No wonder that true Christians can understand each other at once, and find common ground of fellowship! They have been taught the same language, by One whose lessons are never forgotten!

[J. C. Ryle]

John 16:13 ... Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

The Fruit.

Where the Holy Spirit is, there will always be deep conviction of sin and true repentance for it. It is His special office to convict of sin.

He shows the exceeding holiness of God. He teaches the exceeding corruption and infirmity of our nature. He strips us of our blind self-righteousness.  He opens our eyes to our awful guilt, folly and danger.  He fills the heart with sorrow, contrition, and abhorrence for sin as the abominable thing which God hates.

He who knows nothing of all this, and saunters carelessly through life, thoughtless about sin, and indifferent and unconcerned about his soul is a dead man before God! He has not the Holy Spirit.

The presence of the Holy Spirit in a man's heart can only be known by the fruits and effects He produces. Mysterious and invisible to mortal eye as His operations are they always lead to certain visible and tangible results.

Just as you know there is life in a tree by its sap, buds, leaves and fruits just so you may know the Spirit to be in a man's heart by the influence He exercises over his thoughts, affections, opinions, habits, and life. I lay this down broadly and unhesitatingly; I see it clearly marked out in our Lord Jesus Christ's words, "Every tree is known by his own fruit." (Luke 6:44)

[J. C. Ryle]

John 16:8 ... And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
