The More The Bible is Studied

My conviction is that the more the Bible is studied--the more there is found in it to be studied. Fresh light, strength, joy, help, grace, and blessing, break out from it! Scripture is like the dawn ever new in its light; the air ever fresh in its vitality; spiritual food ever nourishing to our soul; the flowers ever beautiful in their variety.

Our God and Father in Christ, I thank You that You have given Your Holy Word for my instruction. Enable me in the grace of the Holy Spirit to love Your Word supremely, to believe it wholly, to live it out truly, to follow it earnestly, to rest on it contentedly, to follow it continually, to practice it consistently, to obey it unhesitatingly, to hear its voice attentively, to handle it reverently, and to enter into its spirit devotedly. In His Name, who alone is worthy, I pray. Amen.

2 Timothy 2:15 … Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Wonderous Countrast

In the floral kingdom, the flowers have many hues. A number of different colored flowers in a bouquet will enhance the beauty of each other by their contrast.

Just so in the cross of Christ, the attributes of God are brought out in wondrous contrast and yet with consistent harmony. There we see His name glorified, His love manifested, His majesty upheld, His justice satisfied, His truth vindicated, His law magnified, and His righteousness displayed in the putting away of our sins!

[Frederick Marsh]

Psalm 85:10 ... Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

Colossians 1:20 ... And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

Hebrews 12:2 ... Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.❤

Moral and Spiritual Parasites

There are moral and spiritual parasites which throttle, kill, injure, or retard the growth of the spiritual life!

1. The parasite of
sloth will hinder the grace of watchfulness as it did the five virgins. Matthew 25:5

2. The parasite of
worldliness will kill the grace of devotion as it did in Demas. 2 Timothy 4:10

3. The parasite of
pride will devastate the grace of humility as it did with the Devil. 1 Timothy 3:6

4. The parasite of
unbelief will keep down the grace of faith as is seen in the children of Israel. Hebrews 3:17-19

5. The parasite of
self-importance will kill the grace of self-denial as is stated of Diotrephes. 3 John 9

6. The parasite of
avarice will stifle the grace of reality as is evidenced in Achan. Joshua 7:21

7. The parasite of
covetousness will strangle the grace of generosity as is manifest in Balaam. 2 Peter 2:15

The Best Evidence of Christianity!

Jesus is the chief among ten thousand, the altogether lovely One!  Christ is the Chiefest or better than the best.

His love is unknowable! Ephesians 3:19

His riches are unsearchable! Ephesians 3:18

His joy is unspeakable! 1 Peter 1:8

His ways are untrackable! Romans 11:33

His grace is inexhaustible! 2 Corinthians 9:8

His peace is unfathomable! Philippians 4:7

And He Himself is unsurpassable! Exodus 15:11

His character was beautiful with holiness in every detail. Hebrews 7:26

His love was pure and faithful in all its affection. John 13:1

His service was true and beneficent in all its workings. Acts 10:38

His words were tender and true in all their utterances. John 7:45

His life was consistent in every department. Mark 7:37

His aim was single and concentrated in glorifying God. John 17:4

His mission was to benefit all who would trust Him, in dying a death which they deserved. 2 Corinthians 8:9

Christ is Christianity and the best evidence of Christianity is Christ!

"Yes, He is altogether lovely! This is my Beloved, and this is my Friend!" Song of Songs 5:16

With Consistent Harmony!

The Secret of a Holy Life

Prayer is the secret of a holy life!

Prayer is a sin-killer. No one can sin and pray, for prayer will make us cease from sin or sin will make us cease from prayer.

Prayer is a power-bringer. It is the hand that touches the hem of the garment of Divine grace, and causes the life which is in the Divine One to flow into us.

Prayer is a victory-giver. Bunyan's Christian found that the weapon of all-prayer was sufficient to wound and defeat the adversary who would stop him in his progress as a pilgrim.

Prayer is a holiness-promoter. It is like the gentle dew which falls upon the thirsty plants, and causes them to be refreshed and to fructify.

Prayer is a dispute-adjuster. Let any two brethren who are at loggerheads get on their knees, and ask the Lord about any disputed matter and they will find the Lord saying to their troubled spirits: "Peace, be still!"

Prayer is an  obstacle-remover, as Peter found when the angel came in answer to the prayers of the saints, and delivered him from the prison.

Prayer is a Christ-revealer for it clarifies our vision and enables us to see the unseen Christ!

[Frederick Marsh]

Matthew 26:41 ... Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Colossians 4:2 ... Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

1 Thessalonians 5:17 ... Pray without ceasing.❤

The Sweet Music

Mendelssohn, on one occasion, hearing an organ being played asked permission to play it for a few minutes. The organist reminded Mendelssohn that he was a total stranger to him and that strangers were not allowed to touch the valuable instrument.

At last permission granted, and then Mendelssohn brought forth such music from the organ as to make the organist weep! Ah! But before the music came forth, there were two things necessary: the first was, the instrument had to be abandoned to Mendelssohn; and the second, Mendelssohn had to take control of it.

The same is true with us in the spiritual realm. There must be the entire surrender to Christ first and then He shall bring forth from us the sweet music of a holy heart, a lovely character, a gentle disposition,  a surpassing peace,  a sweet humility, a lowly service, a beautiful sympathy, and a Christlike life!

Romans 12:1-2 ... I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Colossians 4:12 ... Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 ... For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;❤

He Prays Earnestly

The thing which made Elijah pray as he did, was the man that he was. When our Great High Priest comes with the lighted torch of His grace, and ignites the wood of our being into a holy flame then the sweet-smelling fragrance of our requests ascend acceptably to God, and bring down the benediction of His love.

The art of prayer, is a sense of desperate need! There must be a sense of need, and an earnest desire to have that need met.  "Prayer is the soul's sincere desire,  Uttered or unexpressed,  The motion of a hidden fire, That trembles in the breast."

Prayer is a sin-killer. No one can sin and pray; for prayer will either make us cease from sin or sin will make us cease from prayer.

Prayer is a power-bringer. It is the hand which touches the hem of the garment of Divine grace, and causes the life which is in the Divine One to flow into us.

Prayer is a victory-giver. Bunyan's Christian found that the weapon of "all-prayer" was sufficient to wound and defeat the adversary who would stop him in his progress as a pilgrim.

Prayer is a holiness-promoter. It is like the gentle dew which falls upon the thirsty plants and causes them to be refreshed and to fructify.

Prayer is a dispute-adjuster. Let any two brethren who are at loggerheads get on their knees, and ask the Lord about any disputed matter--and they will find the Lord saying to their troubled spirits, "Peace, be still."

Prayer is an obstacle-remover, as Peter found when an angel came in answer to the prayers of the saints, and delivered him from the prison of Herod's hate.

Prayer is a Christ-revealer, for it clarifies our vision, and enables us to see unseen spiritual realities.

Prayer is the secret of a holy life! We cannot do without prayer. The spiritual life is born in prayer and it flourishes, and is strong, as it lives in that same atmosphere!

It is not the arithmetic of our prayers how many they are;  nor the rhetoric of our prayers how eloquent they are;  nor the geometry of our prayers how long they are;  nor the music of our prayers how sweet our voice may be;  nor the logic of our prayers how proper they may be; nor the method of our prayers how orderly they may be;  nor even the theology of our prayers how good the doctrine may be,  which God cares for. It is only fervency in prayer, which will make a man prevalent with God. Fervent prayer hits the mark, and pierces the walls of Heaven!

James 5:16 ... Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

James 5:17 ... Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.

Worldliness!

1. Worldliness is evil in its nature. Galatians 1:4

2. Worldliness is downward in its tendency. Ephesians 2:1-4

3. Worldliness is contaminating in its influence. James 1:27

4. Worldliness is antagonistic to God. James 4:4

5. Worldliness is corrupting in its association. 2 Peter 4:1; 2 Peter 2:20

6. Worldliness is unsatisfying in its pleasures. 1 Corinthians 7:31; 1 John 2:17

7. Worldliness is hateful in its opposition. 1 John 3:13

Separation from the world is the Lord's clear and definite direction. To be specific in our desires and efforts to be separate from the world the following rules should be followed:

1. Go to no place where the Lord would not take you.

2. Be found in no company that is not helpful to your Christian life.

3. Be no party to any transaction upon which you cannot seek your Lord's approval.

4. Listen to no voice which would lead you away from the truth of God's Word.

5. Allow no pleasure to interfere with your attendance at the means of Grace.

6. Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God!

Strive to do the will of God, as found in His Word, nothing less, nothing more, nothing else!

[Frederick Marsh]

1 John 2:15-17 ... Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.   And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Ephesians 4:26-27 ... Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil.

1 Corinthians 10:30-31 ...  For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?  Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.❤
