Adams Quotes

Pride thrust Adam out of paradise, Saul out of his kingdom, Nebuchadnezzar out of men's society, Haman out of court, and Lucifer out of Heaven!

Satan, like a skillful fisherman, baits his hook according to the appetite of the fish!

Half our virtue arises from our being out of the way of temptation!

No man more truly loves God, than he who is most fearful to offend Him.

Good deeds are such things that no man is saved for them, nor without them.

Death is as near to the young as to the old. Here is all the difference: death stands behind the young man's back, but before the old man's face.

How certain you are to die, you know; how soon to die, you know not.

You can name no living man, not the sickest, which you are sure shall die before you.

We spend our years with sighing it is a valley of tears. Death is the funeral of all our sorrows!

Conscience is God's deputy in the soul.

Christ is the sum of the whole Bible, prophesied, typified, prefigured, exhibited, demonstrated, to be found in every leaf, almost in every line the Scriptures being but as it were, the swaddling bands of the child Jesus.

Self-righteousness is the devil's masterpiece to make us think well of ourselves.

He who demands mercy and shows none, burns the bridges over which he himself must later pass!

Stay in Christ!

Jesus hides our unrighteousness with His righteousness, covers our disobedience with His obedience, shadows our death with His death that the wrath of God cannot find us!

[Thomas Adams]

Ephesians 5:6-8 ... Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

Romans 5:9 ... Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

1 Thessalonians 5:9 ... For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

Let Us Go There

God, in His mercy, threatens before He punishes; that He may not punish as He threatens!

Let us descend daily into Hell by meditation; lest we finally descend there by condemnation.

Let us often go to Hell while we live; lest we go there when we are dead!

[Thomas Adams]

Luke 12:5 ... But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

Psalm 9:17 ... The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

Acts 3:19 ... Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.❤

The First Lesson of A Christian

Humility is knowing that we are not humble. Alas! who is humble?  Perhaps many who think themselves high in Christ's school, have not yet begun with their A-B-C's. The first lesson of a Christian is humility; and he who has not learned the first lesson, is not fit to take out a new one.

[Thomas Adams]

1 Peter 5:5-6 ... Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.  Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

Matthew 23:12 ... And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

James 4:10 ... Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.❤

The Very Substance

Christ is the sum of the whole Bible; prophesied, typified, prefigured, exhibited, demonstrated, to be found in every leaf, almost in every line. The Scriptures being but as it were, the swaddling bands of the child Jesus.

John 1:14 ... And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 5:39 ...  Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Luke 24:27 ... And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.❤

Persevere

Even the tired horse, when he comes near home, mends pace: Be good always, without weariness, but best at last; that the nearer thou comest to the end of thy days, the nearer thou mayest be to the end of thy hopes, the salvation of thy soul.

[Thomas Adams]

Proverbs 21:31 ... The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the Lord.

Psalm 31:24 ... Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 9:24 ...  Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
