God's True Grace

But if we attend to what the Bible says of grace, we shall discover that the True Grace of God is different from what man conceives. Instead of its being an enemy to holiness grace is the root on which holiness grows, the fountain from which holiness springs, and the principle that produces holiness in the heart.

True grace brings home the Word with power, conviction, and demonstration to the soul! Acts 14:3

True grace works faith in the hearts of poor sinners, who are said "to believe through grace!" Acts 18:27

True grace calls its objects out of a state of nature, sin, and rebellion against God and teaches them to pray, and mourn before the Lord! Galatians 1:15; Zechariah 12:10

True grace makes obedient to the faith and leads the soul to receive "grace upon grace" out of the fullness of Jesus! Romans 1:5; John 1:16

True grace destroys the love and dominion of sin and leads us from the law to the gospel! Romans 6:14

True grace brings home a sense of pardon to the soul and imparts everlasting consolation! Ephesians 1:7; 2 Thessalonians 2:16

True grace removes condemnation, and justifies us freely, fully, and eternally! Romans 3:24; Titus 3:7

True grace strengthens, supports, and carries the Christian through all his conflicts, tribulations, and trials! 2 Corinthians 12:9

True grace builds up and establishes its possessor in truth, in faith, and in love! Acts 20:32; Hebrews 13:9

True grace leads to holy, scriptural, and consistent practice! Titus 2:11-15

True grace will make a man labor for God and the good of immortal souls! 1 Corinthians 15:10

True grace will regulate his lifestyle according to gospel precepts! 2 Corinthians 1:12

True grace will make him generous and liberal in the Lord's cause, and to the poor! 2 Corinthians 8:1-7; 9:6-14

True grace flows in abundance, saves all its objects, and raises them to reign in life! Romans 5:17; Ephesians 2:6-8

True grace is always a gift and is invariably free! Romans 11:6; Ephesians 4:7

True grace communicates more and more to its possessor, until the victory and conquest is complete! James 4:6

The man that possesses the True Grace of God and is living under its sacred influence mourns over his state as a sinner, longs for perfection as a believer, and cannot be perfectly happy until purged from all pollution.

The Believer's Perfection

Feeling fully what I am in myself, and proving afresh that "in my flesh dwells no good thing" (Romans 7:18) in this sad state I fly to Jesus as my only refuge!

Oh, that the depth of my sin and misery may be overcome by His rich grace, that with Mary I may weep at His dear feet, and love much, having much forgiven. While in the body we shall never be free from sin. I had been looking for something from and in my flesh which the Word of God does not warrant me to expect. "That which is born of the flesh is flesh" (John 3:6) and ever will be!

The believer's perfection is in Christ. Oh, that He may condescend to teach me, and lead me to look straight out of self to a glorious Christ!

[Ruth Byron]

Zechariah 13:1 ...  In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

Colossians 2:10 ... And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

"The Spirit of Grace"

Grace is one of the most beautiful words in God's Book. The very sound of it is musical to the believer who understands it. It just meets our case, for it tells us that God is inclined to be favorable unto us; more, that he is prepared to shower down the richest blessings upon us; and that what he gives he gives freely, from the love of his own heart.

Grace is favor shown to the unworthy, without any cause or reason but what is found in God's own bosom. Grace never looks outside of itself for a motive but is its own motive. It dwells in all its fullness in Jesus and is the glory of the gospel scheme.

But we are not going to dwell upon grace itself but to fix the eye upon the Holy Spirit, as called, "the Spirit of grace." The Spirit is the gift of God's grace one of its greatest gifts. Indeed, it has no greater. Grace gave Jesus, and it gives the Holy Spirit; these gifts are equal in value and importance, as they are equal in nature, power, and glory. Without Jesus, we could have no deliverance from wrath, or title to Heaven; and without the Holy Spirit, we would never realize deliverance or be made fit for glory.

The Father promised the Spirit to his Son, and the Son bestows the Spirit upon his church, and makes us new creatures in Christ Jesus. The Father laid up our fortune in Jesus; Jesus has preserved for us all that the Father entrusted to him; but it is the Holy Spirit who makes known to us the wealth which our heavenly Father has laid up for us and conveys the foretastes and pledges of it into our souls. Holy and blessed Spirit, daily bring down into our souls fresh and fuller supplies of grace from the Father and the Son!

[James Smith]

Zechariah 12:10 ... And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

Five Sharp Stings!

Many love sin, more than God. What is there in sin that any should love it? Sin is a debt. "Forgive us our debts." (Matthew 6:12) Sin is a debt which binds over to the wrath of God! And will you love sin? Does any man love to be in debt? Sin is a disease. "Your whole head is injured; your whole heart is sick. From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness-only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with oil." (Isaiah 1:5-6) And will you love sin? Will any man hug a disease? Will he love his plague sores? Sin is a pollution. The apostle calls it "filthiness." (James 1:21) It is compared to leprosy and to poison of asps!

Sin is a hideous monster. Lust makes a man brutish-and malice makes him devilish! What is in sin to be loved? Shall we love deformity? God's heart rises against sinners. "My soul loathed them!"(Zechariah 11:8)

Sin is an enemy. It is compared to a "serpent". Sin has five sharp stings: shame, guilt, horror, death, damnation! Will a man love that which seeks his death? Surely then it is better to love God than sin. God will save you, but sin will damn you!

Is he not a fool who loves damnation! But love to God will never let sin thrive in the heart. The love of God withers sin. The flower of love kills the weed of sin! How should we labor for that grace of love to God-which is the only corrosive to destroy sin!

[Thomas Watson]

Romans 1:28-32 ... And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Stand With Israel

Stand With Israel.

Genesis 12:3 ...  And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

Zechariah 2:8 ... For thus saith the Lord of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.

Psalm 121:4 ... Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

For a Drop of Pleasure!

Many murder their own souls! They willfully damn themselves and throw themselves into Hell! Who are those who murder their own souls? They willfully murder their souls who have no sense of God, or the world to come, and are past feeling. Tell them of God's holiness and justice, and they are not affected at all. "They made their hearts as an adamant stone!" (Zechariah 7:12)

Sinners have adamantine hearts nothing will work upon them, neither ordinances nor judgments. They do not believe in God; they laugh at Hell. Thus, they murder their own souls, and throw themselves into Hell as fast as they can! They willfully murder their own souls who resign themselves to their lusts, let what will come of it. "Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more!" (Ephesians 4:19)

Let ministers speak to them about their sins, let conscience speak, let afflictions speak they will have their lusts, even though they go to Hell for them! Do not this murder their own souls? Many say in their hearts, "Let our sins damn us just so that they but please us!" Herod will have his incestuous lusts, though it costs him his soul. For a drop of pleasure, men will drink a sea of wrath! These massacre and damn their own souls!

Oh! take heed of murdering your own souls!

[Thomas Watson]

Proverbs 5:22-23 ... His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.  He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

The Believer's Graces

Saving grace is the infusion of new and holy principles into the heart, whereby it is changed from what it was, and is made more and more into Christ's image. Grace infuses light into the understanding, tenderness into the conscience, consent into the will, and harmony into the affections.

Yes, grace is like leaven, pervading the whole man until all is leavened. Grace is a string of pearls, with which the Church (Christ's Bride) is adorned. The heart inlaid and enameled with grace, is like the "King's daughter, all glorious within." A gracious soul is the image of Christ, skillfully drawn with the pencil of the Holy Spirit. A heart beautified with grace is God's lesser Heaven, "I dwell in the high and lofty place, and also with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit." (Isaiah 57:15)

Grace humbles yet elevates. Grace is the flower of the soul, which fragrance Christ delights to savor. Grace is to the soul, what the eye is to the body, the sun is to the world, the diamond is to the ring. Grace makes the heart a spiritual temple which has this inscription on it, "Holiness unto the Lord!" (Zechariah 14:20)

The believer's graces are weapons to defend them, wings to elevate them, jewels to enrich them, spices to perfume them, stars to adorn them, cordials to revive them, and evidence for Heaven, when death is near. When grace flourishes, sin cannot thrive! Grace is Christ's portrait drawn on the soul. The river of grace can never be dried up, for the Spirit of God is the spring which feeds it.

Here on earth, Christ puts His graces upon His spouse; in Heaven He will put His glory upon her.

[Thomas Watson]

Isaiah 61:10 ...  I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

Pierced!!

Pierced! WHO pierced Him? WE did and pierced Him to the heart! Nor were we satisfied with piercing Him once, for we have pierced Him often, and pierced Him through and through! Our unbelief pierces Him; our ingratitude pierces Him; the coldness of our love pierces Him; our forgetfulness pierces Him; our preferring the world to Him pierces Him; our disobedience to His Word pierces Him; and our doubting of His love pierces Him!

It was WE who pierced Him on Calvary! We put the nails and the hammer into the hands of the executioners! We put the spear into the hand of the Roman soldier! Yes, it was we who gathered the thorns, picked out the sharpest, formed them into a mock crown, thrust it on His head, and with the staff beat the thorns into His temples! See, see, there He hangs! Pierced in His head, hands, feet, and side, pierced for us, pierced by us! Look, my soul, at the pierced One! God's holy Son hangs on that cross!

O my soul, look at Jesus! He is your Substitute. He is there for you! He is suffering death for you! He is bearing the desert of your sins in His body on the tree! He is enduring your curse, being made accursed for you! He is revealing what is in man's nature, what is in God's heart, and what He is willing to do and suffer, rather than I should perish! Yes, Jesus is there for me! He represents my person! He answers for my crimes! He dies in my stead!

O Savior, was ever any love, was ever any agony, was ever any death like Yours! Look, my soul, look to Jesus, the pierced One! Look, and mourn, because your sins degraded, disgraced, and put Him to grief! Look, and rejoice, for you shall have dignity, by His degradation, honor, by His disgrace, and life, by His death! Look, and be sorry that you have ever sinned, and so caused Jesus to suffer! Look, and rejoice that you shall live forever to glorify and praise His name!

O my soul, Jesus was wounded for your transgressions, and bruised for your iniquities! His blood has made your peace with God, His righteousness gives you a title to eternal life, and His death delivers you from dying! I fix my eye intently on Jesus on the Hill Calvary and marking all His tears, wounds, and agonies I feel that I was the cause of all. I myself did it! Yes, I MYSELF bruised Him, scourged Him, spit on Him, crowned Him with thorns, smote Him with the fist, and nailed Him to the cursed tree! I inflicted it all!

Yet, O wonder of wonders! I derive pardon, holiness, and eternal life from it!

[James Smith]

Isaiah 53:5 ... But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

1 John 5:13 ... These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Gold Suffering

In order to be able to truly judge rightly you must know what it is to suffer injustice. Sensitivity in this area is what He is after; For His people will judge the nations in righteousness.

The trying of your faith purges out insensitivity and iniquity. He has not let go of your hand. He stands with you in your trial and the fiery furnace. Those who seek to move in His authority will walk a path similar to the path He walked. Suffering produces the beautiful gold of good character. His life surrounds you. Take heart.

[Troi Nelson Cockayne]

Zechariah 13:9 ... And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.

Isaiah 48:10 ... Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

Job 23:10 ... But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

Honoring The Lord!!

What is signified by "honoring" the Lord is clearly exemplified by the case of Phinehas: he put the glory of God's name above all personal and sentimental considerations, being zealous in promoting and protecting His interests here on earth. Conversely, what is meant by not "honoring" the Lord, appears in the sad failure of Eli and his sons, who thought more of personal and family concerns than of hallowing God. In what follows, we seek to show some of the most important things that are included in this expression, "those who honor me."

God Himself. This requires that we have right views of Him. Unless our thoughts about Him are shaped by what Scripture reveals concerning God's being, character, and perfections we shall entertain the most erroneous and degrading ideas of Him. Such, alas, is the case with the great majority today even in Christendom: to them the Deity of Holy Writ is "the unknown God." The popular conception now prevailing is that God is fickle, sentimental, and weak so that He has much cause to complain "you thought that I was altogether such an one as yourself!" (Psalm 50:21)

His absolute sovereignty, His ineffable justice, His awe-inspiring majesty, His ineffable holiness is unperceived by multitudes of professing Christians!! God is to be honored, by ascribing to Him the glory of His matchless excellency. (Exodus 15:11; Psalm 104:1) He is to be honored by sanctifying Him in our hearts. (Isaiah 8:13) By trusting, adoring, and obeying Him. He is to be honored in our public worship: "God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints." (Psalm 89:7) "Sing forth the honor of his name: make his praise glorious." (Psalm 66:2)

His Son. Nothing is so dear unto God, as the honoring of Christ. No sooner was He laid in the manger than a multitude of the heavenly host was sent over Bethlehem's plains to proclaim, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." (Luke 2:14) When in Servant form, He was baptized in the Jordan, the heavens were opened, and the voice of the Father was heard saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." (Matthew 3:17) When suffering unspeakable humiliation upon the cross, He moved the centurion to testify, "Truly this was the Son of God!" (Matthew 27:54)

After His mission on earth was completed, God highly exalted Him by seating Him at His own right hand. It is His express will, "that all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father" (John 5:23): all manner of worship which is due to the Father is due to the Son, (Revelation 5) We honor Christ by resting on His finished work, by taking His yoke upon us, by obeying His precepts, by following the example He has left us, by showing forth His praises.

His Word. God has "magnified his word above all his name" (Psalm 138:2), that is above every other medium through which His perfections are revealed.

His wisdom and power are displayed in creation and providence, but His will and the way of salvation are made known in His Word. Our reverence for the Word indicates the measure in which we truly honor God. Our reverence for God's Word is manifested by receiving it without question or qualification as the inspired and infallible communication from God; yielding unreservedly thereto, subordinating reason and all natural inclinations to its divine authority; taking it as our sole Rule and Standard in all matters of faith and practice, so that the determining question is not how others believe and act but by what the Scriptures say; meditating upon it day and night, making it the food of our souls; our characters being formed and conduct regulated by its teachings obeying its statues, heeding its warnings, drawing strength and comfort from its promises.

His Gospel. It is in the proclamation of the same, as a revelation of divine grace through Christ unto sinners, that the churches most honor God. The Law must indeed be preached, yet in subserviency to the Gospel. The sinner requires to hear what the Law charges him with, that he may learn his need of fleeing to Christ for discharge from its curse and condemnation. While "by the law is the knowledge of sin" (Romans 3:20), nevertheless, it is not by the preaching of the Law that sinners are delivered from its penalty.

No, it is the Gospel of Christ which is "the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes." (Romans 1:16) Now the triune God is honored by the churches when the Gospel is preached in its unadulterated purity and its unfettered freeness as it is slighted and insulted by the pulpit when displaced by any other substitute.

His Spirit. We must confine ourselves now to a single aspect. He is honored by the evangelist and by the church when He is looked unto and counted upon for His blessing on the preaching of the Gospel. It needs to be clearly recognized that neither the faithfulness nor the earnestness still less the logic or the rhetoric of the preacher will or can quicken a single soul. "Not by [human] might, nor by power but by my spirit, says the LORD Almighty" (Zechariah 4:6). Alas that the churches, in their desire to "appeal to the young people," now have more faith in worldly methods and musical attractions; and in consequence, the Spirit is quenched. To our knees, in supplication to Him, is the great need and call of the hour.

His Cause. "Honor the Lord with your substance, and with the first fruits of all your increase" (Proverbs 3:9). Remember that He it is who "gives you power to get wealth" (Deuteronomy 8:18). And do you think that He does so in order that we may gratify selfish lusts and indulge extravagant tastes?

No, God's bounty unto us is to be used in works of piety and charity and not wasted upon luxuries and vanities! Christ still sits near the offering box, beholding how we drop in our money! (Mark 12:41).

Our "substance" must not be limited unto money but understood as including all the talents which God has given us given, for the express purpose of honoring Him, and not for magnifying ourselves. All that we are and have is to be dedicated to His glory.

[A. W. Pink]

Return To God!

When we find ourselves depressed, down, irritated, annoyed, or otherwise unhappy, we need to return to the source of our joy, and then we will see those circumstances that are sapping our joy in perspective. The circumstances of this life will pale into insignificance when compared to that which we have received from God.

 [R.C. Sproul]

Zechariah 1:3 ... Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.

The Unchangeable Method of God

God will have the soul truly sensible of the bitterness of sin before it shall taste the sweetness of mercy. The plough of conviction must go deep, and make deep furrows in the heart, before God will sow the precious seed of grace there so that it may have depth of earth to grow in. This is the unchangeable method of God in bestowing grace to begin with conviction of sin. First to show man his sin then his Savior; first his danger then his Redeemer; first his wound then his cure; first his own vileness then Christ's righteousness.

The sinner must see the worthlessness and vileness of his own righteousness before he can be saved by Christ's righteousness. The Israelites are first stung with the fiery serpents and then the brazen serpent is set up to heal them. We must see the leprosy of our righteousness, and be brought to cry out, "Unclean, unclean!" We must mourn for Him whom we have pierced and then He sets open for us "a fountain to cleanse us from all sin and impurity." (Zechariah 12:10, 13:1.)

Be convinced of the evil of sin the filthy and heinous nature of it. Sin is the greatest evil in the world: it wrongs God; it wounds Christ; it grieves the Holy Spirit; it damns a precious soul. All other evils cannot be compared with this. Though to DO sin is the worst work yet to SEE sin is the best sight!

Sin discovered in its vileness makes Christ to be desired in His fullness! Alas! it is Christ's infinite righteousness which must atone for our sins for it is an infinite God whom we have sinned against! If ever your sin is pardoned, it is Christ's infinite mercy which must pardon it! If ever you are reconciled to God, it is Christ's infinite merit which must do it! If ever your heart is changed. it is Christ's infinite power which must effect it! If ever your soul escapes Hell, and is saved at last, it is Christ's infinite grace which must save it!

 [Matthew Mead]

Luke 5:32 ...  I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

View Him Yonder

View Him yonder, sinner, sweating in the garden. See the ruby drops of blood as they fall from that dear visage! Oh, see Him sinner, see Him in Pilate's hall. View the streams of gore as they gush from those lacerated shoulders! See Him, sinner see Him on His cross!

View that holy head still marked with the wounds with which the thorns pierced His sacred temples! Oh, view that pure face, emaciated and marred! See the vile spittle still hanging there the spittle of cruel mockers! View those loving eyes floating in tears with languid pity! Look, too, at those kind hands, and view them as they stream like fountains of blood!

[Charles H. Spurgeon]

Bursting Forth Into a Song

How heart-cheering to the believer, is the delight that God has in His saints!  We cannot see any reason in ourselves why the Lord should take pleasure in us. We cannot take delight in ourselves, for we often have to groan being burdened, conscious of our sinfulness and deploring our unfaithfulness. We also fear that God's people cannot take much delight in us, for they must perceive so much of our imperfections and our follies that they may rather lament our infirmities, than admire our graces.

But we love to dwell upon this transcendent truth, this glorious mystery: that as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride so does our God rejoice over us! In what strong language He expresses His delight in His people! Who could have conceived of the Eternal One as bursting forth into a song? Yet it is written, "He will take great delight in you, He will rejoice over you with singing!" Zephaniah 3:17

As He looked upon His newly created world, He said, "It is very good" but He did not sing.  As He views His works of providence, I do not read that He sings.   But But when He gazes on His redeemed people, the purchase of Jesus' blood, His own chosen ones it seemed as if the great heart of the Infinite could restrain itself no longer but, wonder of wonders and miracle of miracles,  God, the Eternal One, sings out of the joy of His soul!

[ Charles H. Spurgeon]

Isaiah 62:5 … For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee.

The Great Woe

You know, the Church started out with a Bible, then it got a hymnbook, and for years that was it a Bible and a hymnbook. The average church now certainly wouldn't be able to operate on just a hymnbook and the Bible. Now we have to have all kinds of religious bunk. A lot of people couldn't serve God at all without at least a vanload of equipment to keep them happy.

Some of these attractions that we have to win people and keep them coming may be fine, or they may be cheap. They may be elevated, or they may be degrading. They may be artistic, or they may be coarse it all depends upon who is running the show! But the Holy Spirit is not the center of attraction, and the Lord is not the one who is in charge. We bring in all sorts of anti-Scriptural and unscriptural claptrap to keep the people happy and keep them coming.

As I see it, the great woe is not the presence of these religious toys and trifles but the fact that they have become a necessity, and the presence of the Eternal Spirit is not in our midst!

[A. W. Tozer]

Zechariah 4:6 ... Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.

Little Things

Do little things as though they were great, because of the majesty of Jesus Christ who does them in us, and who lives our life; and do the greatest things as though they were little and easy because of His omnipotence.

[Blaise Pascal]

Zechariah 4:10 ... For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth.

Colossians 3:17 ... And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

1 Corinthians 10:31 ... Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.❤

Time of Old Age

I am drawing nearer and nearer to the season which the Psalmist either expected or felt. Many reasons teach the aged believer the need of this prayer. As his graces are still imperfect so his powers are feelingly upon the decline. It was but little he could do at his best and now less and less!

He feels other props and comforts dropping off apace. When he was young, he had warm spirits and pleasing prospects; but now, what a change of the friends in which he once delighted! In some he has found inconstancy they have forsaken and forgotten him; and others have been successively taken away by death. They have fallen like the leaves in autumn--and now he stands almost a naked trunk. If any yet remain, he is expecting to lose them likewise unless he is first taken from them.

Old age abates, and gradually destroys the relish of such earthly comforts as might be otherwise enjoyed. Pains, infirmities, loss of sleep, the failure of sight and hearing, and all the senses are harbingers, like Job's messengers arriving in close succession, to tell him that death is upon his progress, and is not far away!

If youth has no security against death then old age has no possibility of escaping the grim monster. But though friends fail, cisterns burst, gourds wither, strength declines, and death advances if God does not forsake me then all is well.

[John Newton]

Psalm 71:9 ... Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.

Isaiah 46:4 ... And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.

Zechariah 8:4 ... Thus saith the Lord of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age.❤

The Fires of Christ's Furnace

O my soul, what deep need is there for this refining and purifying of your Lord, what inward corruption, what carnality,  what worldliness, what self-seeking, what creature idolatry, what God dishonoring unbelief! All these imperatively demand the searching, burning, purifying fires of Christ's furnace!   My soul, your Refiner and Purifier is Jesus!  It is a consolatory thought that our refining is in the hands of Jesus in the hands that were pierced for us on the cross!

Jesus shapes all your trials!  Jesus sends all your afflictions! Jesus mixes all your sorrows!  Jesus shapes and balances all the clouds of your pilgrimage!  Jesus prepares and heats the furnace that refines you as silver and purifies you as gold!

Then, O my soul, tremble not at the knife that wounds you, at the flame that scorches you, at the cloud that shades you, at the billows that surge above you. Jesus is in it all and you are as safe as though you had reached the blissful climate where the vine needs no pruning, and where the ore needs no purifying, where the sky is never darkened, and upon whose golden sands where no storms of adversity ever blow, or waves of sorrow ever break.

Mark the Refiner's position. "He will SIT as a refiner and purifier of silver." It would be fatal to is purpose, if the human refiner were to leave his post while the liquid mass was seething in the cauldron. But there he patiently sits, watching and tempering the flame, and removing the refuse and the dross as it floats upon the surface of the molten ore.

Just so, Christ sits as a Refiner and with an eye that never slumbers, and with a patience that never wearies, and with a love that never chills, and with a faithfulness that never falters, He watches and controls the process that purifies our hearts, burnishes our graces, sanctifies our nature, and impresses more vividly His own image of loveliness upon our soul.

If He places you in the fire, He will bring you through the fire, "that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ."

But sweet and soothing is the truth that the believer is not alone in the fire! The Refiner is with us, as with the three Hebrew children passing through the king's burning furnace.  The Lord will have us be polished stones. As some believers are more rusty and some more alloyed than others, they need a rougher file, and a hotter furnace! This may account for the great severity of trial through which some of the Lord's precious jewels are called to pass. Not less dear to His heart, are they for this refining.

Look up, my soul, to your Refiner! The knife is in a Father's hand! The flame is under a Savior's control! Be still, be humble, be submissive.

[Octavius Winslow]

Micah 6:9 ... The Lord's voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.

Zechariah 13:9 ... And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

Malachi 3:3 ... And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.❤
