Low Views of Yourself?

What are you to yourself? worthless? vile? empty?

What is Jesus to you? precious? lovely? all your salvation? all your desire?

What is sin to you? the most hateful thing in the world?

What is holiness to you? most lovely? most longed for?

What is the throne of grace to you? the most attractive spot?

What is the cross to you? the sweetest resting place in the universe?

What is God to you? your God? your Father? the spring of all your joys? the fountainhead of all your bliss? the center where your affections meet?

Is it so? Then you are a child of God!

Those low views of yourself that brokenness, that inward mourning, that secret confession, that longing for more spirituality, more grace, more devotedness, more love, does but prove the existence, reality, and growth of God's work within you. Cheer up, precious soul! That soul never perished, that felt itself to be vile, and Jesus to be precious!

Psalm 51:17 ... The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Psalm 138:6 ... Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.

Isaiah 1:18 ... Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Repent!!

Man cannot be righteous in God’s sight until he repents of his own expectation that he can be righteous in his own sight. God is not mighty toward man until man is weak toward God.

Joel 2:13 ...  And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

Repentance ~

Repentance is not a once and for all issue.

Repentance is a lifestyle.

2 Corinthians 7:10 ... For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Philippians 2:12 ...  Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Acts 26:20 ... But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

Conviction...

You are in a very dangerous place if you lose the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

God is most angry with someone when He no longer corrects them.

Repent.

Psalm 7:11 ... God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.

Romans 1:28 ...  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Job 4:9 ... By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.

Deuteronomy 31:17 ... Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?

The Harlot in Your Bosom!

There is usually one sin that is the favorite: the sin which the heart is most fond of. A godly man will not indulge his darling sin: "I kept myself from my iniquity." (Psalm 18:23) "I will not indulge the sin to which the bias of my heart more naturally inclines." "Fight neither with small nor great, but only with the king." (1 Kings 22:31) A godly man fights this king sin. If we would have peace in our souls, we must maintain a war against our favorite sin, and never leave off until it is subdued.

Question: How shall we know what our beloved sin is?

Answer 1. The sin which a man does not love to have reproved, is the darling sin. Herod could not endure having his incest spoken against. If the prophet meddles with that sin, it shall cost him his head! "Do not touch my Herodias!" Men can be content to have other sins reproved, but if the minister puts his finger on the sore and touches this sin their hearts begin to burn in malice against him!

Answer 2. The sin on which the thoughts run most, is the darling sin. Whichever way the thoughts go, the heart goes. He who is in love with a person cannot keep his thoughts off that person. Examine what sin runs most in your mind, what sin is first in your thoughts and greets you in the morning that is your predominant sin.

Answer 3. The sin which has most power over us, and most easily leads us captive, is the one beloved by the soul. There are some sins which a man can better resist. If they come for entertainment, he can more easily put them off. But the bosom sin comes as a suitor, and he cannot deny it, but is overcome by it. The young man in the Gospel had repulsed many sins but there was one sin which soiled him, and that was covetousness. Mark what sin you are most readily led captive by that is the harlot in your bosom! It is a sad thing that a man should be so bewitched by lust, that if it asks him to part with the Kingdom of Heaven he must part with it, to gratify that lust!

Answer 4. The sin which men most defend, is the beloved sin. He who has a jewel in his bosom, will defend it to his death. The sin we advocate and dispute for, is the besetting sin. The sin which we plead for, and perhaps wrest Scripture to justify it that is the sin which lies nearest the heart! Answer 5. The sin which a man finds most difficulty in giving up, is the endeared sin. Of all his sons, Jacob found most difficulty in parting with Benjamin. So, the sinner says, "This and that sin I have parted with, but must Benjamin go! Must I part with this delightful sin? That pierces my heart!" A man may allow some of his sins to be demolished, but when it comes to one sin that is the taking of the castle; he will never agree to part with that!

That is the master sin for sure! The besetting sin is, of all others, most dangerous! As Samson's strength lay in his hair, so the strength of sin lies in this beloved sin! This is like a poison striking the heart, which brings death. A godly man will lay the ax of repentance to this sin and hew it down! He will sacrifice this, Isaac. He will pluck out this right eye, so that he may see better to go to Heaven!

[Thomas Watson]

Hebrews 12:1 ... Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Grace or The Flesh?

Religion teaches that repentance demands you change.

Grace teaches that repentance is trusting God to change you.

Religion wants you to trust your flesh.

God wants you to trust His grace.

The choice is yours.

The Month of June

See June as a time of ‘fresh repentance.’ Leaving those old habits that you have hated for a long time. God is going to give Supernatural power and grace for each of us to move in greater freedom both from sin and capacity to ‘work properly.’  Take that first step to show God you truly mean business!

We will trade dysfunction for function. We will trade disorder for order. We will trade the lies of broken mindsets to walk in fresh revelation and Truth that sets free. God has not called us to static religion, but to dynamic, productive, responsibility. Not by our own strength, but by His Holy Spirit. We no longer think like caterpillars. We think like butterflies. Let us go deep in fresh humble repentance, even as the world celebrates Pride Month (June,) we know that pride comes before the fall. (Proverbs 16:18) God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. (James 4:6)

See June as a fresh opportunity to break for good anything and everything that would keep us from our butterfly destiny. Our repentance is required for the experience.

Can I get a witness??

Proverbs 1:23 ... Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

Acts 3:19 ...Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.

Make Time for God!!

He who cannot find time to study his Bible will one day find he has time to be sick.

He who has no time to pray must find time to die.

He who can find no time to reflect is most likely to find time to sin.

He who cannot find time for repentance will find an eternity in which repentance will be of no avail.

He who cannot find time to work for others may find an eternity in which to suffer for himself.

[Hannah More]

Matthew 6:33 ... But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 ...  Pray without ceasing.

Hosea 10:12 ...  Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.

Mark 1:15 ...  And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Colossians 4:5 ... Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.

Grace From God

Repentance is a grace of God's Spirit whereby a sinner is inwardly humbled and visibly reformed.

[Thomas Watson]

Ephesians 1:3-6 ... Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:  According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:  Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,  To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

Matthew 9:13 ... But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

2 Corinthians 4:16 ... For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

"Closed"

We have an intimacy problem. I’m convinced one of the most severe consequences of sin is the ability to experience open intimacy. It’s why many marriages suffer creeping separateness. It’s the same reason many go to church their entire lives yet don’t know God or His intimate voice. Closed hearted marriages, closed hearted church attendees, closed hearted relationships to both people and to God.

I still marvel that I spent 20 years attending Church and had virtually no intimacy with God. No one had ever really taught me how to connect or recognize His voice and His loving presence. My preoccupied compromised desires and sins left me fragmented and closed off from the beautiful gift of true intimacy with my wife at the time, God and other relationships. God is after the quality of our love, which comes from a pure heart, from a clear conscience and from a sincere faith. This comes in a greater degree when we repent of defiling sin and the lies that separate us from experiencing intimacy with True Love(God).

Sin taints the quality of our connection to God, our spouse and others by distorting our motives and desires. Often, many of us get stuck in a closed off ‘protection mode’ because of past wounds. We need the healing hug of intimacy. True intimacy. The greatest part about the gospel, and in my opinion, the deeper meaning of it is that Jesus came, died and rose, not so much that we would attend church every week, but to restore each one of us back into intimacy with True Love.  Daily, moment by moment. To be closed is to be in a posture of resisting that True Love.

Repentance is an exchange program where we give up anything that blocks, breaks or defiles true intimacy with God. Repentance is the main requirement for this heavenly miracle. Jesus is the safest place to open up and give our full heart because His love is pure with no shadow of turning. He will never hurt you, leave you or forsake you. But we must open to His hug to experience this miracle of true intimacy and restoration to healthy function. From this point, He is able to heal us from the inside out and make us true lovers of people. Leading others to the same heavenly experience.

That’s the true gospel.

Bouyancy in The Cross

Cling to the cross though your sins rise up before you like mountains for their size; like the sands on the seashore for their number and glowing like scarlet and crimson, in color!

For no sins, however great, or however numerous should tempt us to despond, or to let go of our hold on the cross seeing the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from ALL sin.  There is a 'buoyancy' in the cross which will never let anyone sink, who clings to it!

If our sins were as ponderous as the globe, or as numerous as all the particles of created matter yet embracing the cross of Jesus they are all forgiven and forgiven forever!

They are all blotted out like the dark clouds, which obscured the sun for a little while on the summer's morning!  They are all blotted out like a stone cast from an angel's hand into the depths of ocean!  They are all forgiven and forgotten forever!

Cling to the cross!

[James Smith]

Repentance!!

Repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ always go hand in hand. You cannot have one without the other. This is the only way that sinners obtain eternal salvation. Both are necessary. Both are vital. Both are gifts of God's grace.

1 John 1:9 ... If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Jeremiah 31:18 ... I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the Lord my God.

Lamentations 5:21 ... Turn thou us unto thee, O Lord, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.

Crucify Your Sins!

Crucify your sins, which have crucified your Savior. Did the rocks rent, when Christ died for our sins? And shall not our hearts rent, who have lived in our sins? Oh, that the nails which pierced His hands, should now pierce our hearts. Oh, that they should wound themselves with their sorrows, who have wounded Christ with their sins. Oh, that they who have grieved His heart, should be grieved in their hearts. Oh, that I should be such a bad a child to Him, who has been such a good a Father to me. My sins have been my greatest terror, and my Savior has been my choicest helper. Oh, put sin to death, for sin was the cause of Christ's death.

[William Dyer]

Galatians 5:24-25 ... And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Personal Repentance and Faith

You need to be born again children. You need to come to personal repentance and faith. And if you die before you come to personal repentance and faith, you are not going to Heaven; you are going to Hell. That's the warning we must give to children. We must not presume they're regenerated. We must tell them: You must be regenerated; you must come to faith and repentance.

The Unchangeable Method of God

God will have the soul truly sensible of the bitterness of sin before it shall taste the sweetness of mercy. The plough of conviction must go deep, and make deep furrows in the heart, before God will sow the precious seed of grace there so that it may have depth of earth to grow in. This is the unchangeable method of God in bestowing grace to begin with conviction of sin. First to show man his sin then his Savior; first his danger then his Redeemer; first his wound then his cure; first his own vileness then Christ's righteousness.

The sinner must see the worthlessness and vileness of his own righteousness before he can be saved by Christ's righteousness. The Israelites are first stung with the fiery serpents and then the brazen serpent is set up to heal them. We must see the leprosy of our righteousness, and be brought to cry out, "Unclean, unclean!" We must mourn for Him whom we have pierced and then He sets open for us "a fountain to cleanse us from all sin and impurity." (Zechariah 12:10, 13:1.)

Be convinced of the evil of sin the filthy and heinous nature of it. Sin is the greatest evil in the world: it wrongs God; it wounds Christ; it grieves the Holy Spirit; it damns a precious soul. All other evils cannot be compared with this. Though to DO sin is the worst work yet to SEE sin is the best sight!

Sin discovered in its vileness makes Christ to be desired in His fullness! Alas! it is Christ's infinite righteousness which must atone for our sins for it is an infinite God whom we have sinned against! If ever your sin is pardoned, it is Christ's infinite mercy which must pardon it! If ever you are reconciled to God, it is Christ's infinite merit which must do it! If ever your heart is changed. it is Christ's infinite power which must effect it! If ever your soul escapes Hell, and is saved at last, it is Christ's infinite grace which must save it!

 [Matthew Mead]

Luke 5:32 ...  I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Of Repentance ...

The end of affliction is the discovery of sin, and of that to bring us to the Savior. Let us therefore, with the prodigal, return unto him, and we shall find ease and rest. A repenting penitent, though formerly as bad as the worst of men, may, by grace, become as good as the best.

To be truly sensible of sin, is to sorrow for displeasing of God; to be afflicted that he is displeased by us, more than that he is displeased with us. Your intentions to repentance, and the neglect of that soul-saving duty, will rise up in judgment against you. Repentance carries with it a divine rhetoric, and persuades Christ to forgive multitudes of sins committed against him.

Say not with yourself, "Tomorrow I will repent!" for it is your duty to do it daily.

The gospel of grace and salvation is above all doctrines the most dangerous, if it be received in word only by graceless men if it be not attended with a sensible need of a Savior, and bring them to him. For such men as have only the notion of it, are of all men most miserable for by reason of their knowing more than heathens, this only shall be their final portion, that they shall have greater stripes.

[John Bunyan]

Acts 2:38 … Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Luke 5:32 … I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Matthew 4:17 … From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

It Always Issues in The Following

Conversion begins with a radical turning to God in repentance that issues in a lifetime of living out the implications of that turning, by performing deeds in keeping with that repentance.

"They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from Heaven, whom He raised from the dead Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath." (1 Thessalonians 1:9-10)

This describes the conversion of the Thessalonians as consisting in a radical turning to God from idols, issuing in a life of bond-service to the living God, and an eager waiting for the completion of salvation to be bestowed at the return of Jesus.

If any professed conversion is indeed God's saving work, it always issues in the following:
a life of growing communion with Christ (1 Corinthians 1:9; Philippians 3:8-10);
a life of increasing conformity to Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18);
a life of continuous abiding in Christ (John 15:1-11);
and a life of principled obedience to Christ (John 14:21, 1 John 2:3-4).

[Al Martin]

Acts 26:20 .. But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

A Sight of God!

Job now saw God in another manner than he had ever done before. He saw more of His greatness and glory, of His power and majesty, of His holiness and sovereignty, of His grace and mercy. The effect of seeing God: "Therefore I abhor myself." Job had disgusting and humiliating views of himself. Having a clearer and more correct view of his God led him to despise himself, and he turned from himself with loathing! He now abhorred the rashness he had displayed, the impatience He had manifested, the complaints he had uttered, the self-righteousness he had indulged, and the aspersions he had cast on his God.

Now he says, "I repent." My mind is changed, and I am sorry for my misconduct. According to the custom of the country, and the times in which he lived, he sat down on ashes, put dust on his head, humbling himself before God loathing himself in his own sight for all his abominations.  A sight of God always humbles us!

It humbled the prophet Isaiah, who when he saw God, cried out, "Woe to me, for I am ruined! For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty!" It humbled the apostle Peter, who when he perceived the dignity and glory of Jesus, exclaimed, "Depart from me for I am a sinful man, O Lord!"  It humbled the beloved John, who when Jesus appeared to him in Patmos, fell at His feet as dead!

God's glory always lays the believer in the dust of self-abasement.  Those who know the most of God think the least of themselves.  Pride cannot live in the presence of God. His glory consumes our self-righteousness, dries up our self-admiration, and spoils all our supposed moral beauty.  The higher we rise in our knowledge and enjoyment of God the lower we shall sink in our estimation of ourselves.

"Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes!" True repentance is always attended with self-abhorrence. We abhor not only sinful self; but righteous self!

The more we understand God's love to us, the more we mourn over our sin and sinfulness. The tear of penitence will drop from the eye of faith, on the crystal threshold of the gate of the New Jerusalem. And then the light of glory will extinguish the light of faith and there shall be no more sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain for the former things will have passed away!

[James Smith]

Job 42:5-6 …  I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.
