God Beholds Him with Pleasure and Delight!

There is a wide difference between ostentatious sanctity and true devotion to God. Hypocrites always endeavor to attract the attention of others.

The truly holy man, on the contrary, desires privacy and retirement. Though he is cheerful before men, his sorrows are deep before God. Were his groanings overheard by the world, he would probably be made an object of pity or derision; but God beholds him with pleasure and delight!

"This is the one I esteem he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at My Word!" Isaiah 66:2

"The Lord delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love! Psalm 147:11

"The Lord takes delight in His people; He crowns the humble with salvation!" Psalm 149:4

"The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise!" Psalm 51:17

What inexpressible comfort should this administer to humble penitents! The humbler the thoughts that we have of ourselves the greater does God esteem and delight in us.

[Charles Simeon]

Matthew 6:1 ... Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 6:5 ... And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Matthew 6:16 ... Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Mary's Position

Let us notice Mary's POSITION. She was sitting at the feet of Jesus. Most probably He was reclining on the couch, and she went and took her place behind Him, where she could hear what He said, and occasionally get a glimpse of His face.

It is the posture of HUMILITY she took the lowest place. She had no wish to be seen, nor did she regard her own ease she was intent on getting good from Jesus.

It was the posture of ATTENTION she wished to catch every word, and to understand all that the Lord was saying. If Jesus is teaching, then Mary will attend and listen.

It was the posture of a LEARNER she was a disciple of Jesus; therefore, she sat down at His feet, that she may receive of His words. He need not now say unto her, "Learn of Me," for she was most anxious to do so.

It was the posture of SATISFACTION if she could but be within the sound of His voice, within the sight of His eye it was enough for Mary. Anywhere with Jesus would satisfy her!

It was also the posture of REPOSE here at the feet of Jesus, she found rest unto her soul. Her desires were satisfied, her love was gratified, her hungry soul was fed. It was enough. Being at the feet of Jesus was to her a kind of earthly heaven.

Mary sat at the feet of Jesus in a humble cottage. She now sits by His side in the heavenly mansion!

Reader, how is it with you? Are you humbling enough to take a seat at the feet of Jesus? Is it your delight to listen to His words? Are you like a little child desiring to learn of Him, and be taught by Him? Are you satisfied if you can but get near to Jesus? Do you find sweet and refreshing repose in His presence?

[James Smith]

Luke 10:39 ... And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

Battle Between Pride and Humility

In the quiet chambers of every Christian's heart, a battle rages, a struggle as old as humanity itself. It is the battle between pride, and humility, between the exaltation of self, and the surrender to God.

Let us peruse the Scriptures as we contemplate the dangers of pride and the virtues of humility. Pride, that ancient sin, creeps into our hearts like a serpent whispering lies of self-sufficiency and self-importance. It blinds us to our own faults and leads us down the path of destruction. Pride is an ugly, mother-sin which gives birth to a whole family of horrid sins.

Pride is the most deceitful sin! When pride reigns in the heart it exalts the creature above the Creator, seeking its own glory rather than God's. But oh, the beauty of genuine humility! Humility is the loveliest grace, and it is the mark of a soul surrendered to God. Humility is a sense of our own sinfulness and weakness, combined with a quiet confidence in God's sovereignty and sufficiency. Humility is thought to be the chief virtue, for it is the gateway to wisdom and grace.

With humility comes the fear of the Lord, the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One. Consider the example of Christ, the humble King who stooped down to wash His disciples' feet.

In His humility, He demonstrated the true nature of greatness not in power or prestige, but in service and self-sacrifice. We should strive to imitate Jesus in all things, including His humbleness. He commands us: "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart." (Matthew 11:29)

Let us then, heed the wisdom and the counsel of Scripture. Let us crucify the prideful desires of the flesh and clothe ourselves with humility that we may walk in wisdom and grace.

Humility!!

The flow of His Spirit runs deep in the river bottom of humility. The low places. Those empty of pride He reveals His heart. The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand His Children.

Sit with Him and allow Him to show you, its secrets. He holds astounding joy and peace like a river. Sit with Him that He may fill you. You will be amazed!

This world is a fading vapor and its glory pales in comparison to His glory, His Kingdom. He has come to bring you life abundant, overflowing with joy and laughter.

Run to Him and do not delay!

[Troi Nelson Cockayne]

Isaiah 57:15 ...  For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

All The Sins of The Saints!

All the afflictions, and all the temptations, and all the oppressions, and all the oppositions, and all the persecutions which befall a godly man, shall work for his good. Every cross, and every loss, and every disease which befall the holy man, shall work for his good. Every device of Satan, every snare of Satan, every deceit of Satan, every stratagem of Satan, and every enterprise of Satan against the holy man, shall work for his good. They shall all help to make him more humble, more holy, more heavenly, more spiritual, more faithful, more fruitful, more watchful.  Every prosperity and every adversity, every storm and every calm, every bitter and every sweet, every cross and every comfort, shall work for the holy man's good.

When God gives a mercy that shall work for his good. When God takes away a mercy that shall work for his good. Yes, even all the falls and all the sins of the saints shall work for their good! Oh, the care, the fear, the watchfulness, the tenderness, the zeal which God raises in the souls of His saints by their very falls! Oh, the hatred, the indignation, and the detestation which God raises in the hearts of His children against sin by their very falling into sin!

Oh, what love to Christ, what thankfulness for Christ, what admiration of Christ, what cleaving to Christ, what exalting of Christ, what drawings from Christ's grace are saints led to, by their very falls!  It is the glory of God's holiness, that He can turn spiritual diseases into holy remedies! He can turn soul poisons into heavenly cordials! He can prevent sin by sin and cure falling by falling!

O Christian! What though friends and relations frown upon you, what though enemies are plotting and conspiring against you, what though needs, like armed men, are breaking in upon you, what though men rage, and devils roar against you, what though sickness is devastating your family, what though death stands every day at your elbow yet there is no reason for you to fear nor faint, because all these things shall work for your good! Yes, there is wonderful cause of joy and rejoicing in all the afflictions and tribulations which come upon you considering that they shall all work for your good.

[Thomas Brooks]

Romans 8:28 ...  And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Characteristics of Humility

Without humility there is no salvation. No man can serve or glorify God in this world without this God-given "humbleness of mind."  Anything done for Christ must be done with humility.

Humility is not an act, but an attitude of the heart. Humility is brokenness of heart before God by reason of sin and in gratitude for His love, mercy, and grace to sinners in Christ.

Here are five things revealed in the Word of God as characteristics of humility:

1. Humility is a realization of personal unworthiness before God, by reason of one's own depravity and sin. (Job 42:5-6; Psalm 51:4-5) It is not a show of words which sound humble, but which are designed to gain praise. Rather, it is a heartfelt unworthiness before the holy Lord God. (Luke 18:13; Isaiah 6:5)

2. Humility is a renunciation of all merit and personal righteousness in the sight of God. (Philippians 3:9) No man's heart is humbled before God so long as he imagines that he has anything by which he may merit God's favor, or that his righteousness's are more than filthy rags in God's sight. (Isaiah 64:6)

3. Humility is an inexpressible gratitude of heart to God for His abundant, amazing grace to sinners in Christ. (Psalm 116:12, 16) It causes a person to live with a sense of delightful obligation and indebtedness to the Lord God.

4. Humility is a willing submission and devotion of one's heart to the Lord Jesus Christ that cries, "Lord, what will you have me to do?" (Acts 9:6) Humility is devotion to Christ as Lord, submission to His providential rule of all things, and a determination of heart to obey and honor Him regardless of cost.

5. Humility gladly ascribes the whole work of salvation to God's free and sovereign grace through Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:10)

[Don Fortner]

Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, (Acts 20:19)

Master-Scar of The Soul

Humility makes a man like an angel but pride makes an angel, a devil! Pride is worse than the devil for the devil cannot hurt you, until pride has possessed you. Proud souls are Satan's apes, none imitate him to the life like these; for as face answers to face in a looking-glass, so does a proud soul answer to Satan! "I hate pride and arrogance!" (Proverbs 8:13)

Take heed of pride and haughtiness of spirit. Pride is the great master-scar of the soul; it will bud and blossom it cannot be hidden. Pride is the leprosy of the soul, which breaks forth in the very forehead! Pride is the sum of all vileness, a sea of sin, a mother sin, a breeding sin a sin which has all sorts of sin in its womb! In pride, all vices are wrapped up together in a bundle! Pride is Satan's disease! It is so base a disease, that God would rather see His dearest children buffeted by Satan, than that in pride they should be like Satan (2 Corinthians 12:7).

Pride is a gilded misery, a secret poison, a hidden plague, the engineer of deceit, the mother of hypocrisy, the parent of misery, the moth of holiness, the blinder of hearts, the turner of medicines into maladies. "The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished!" (Proverbs 16:5)

God will have nothing to do with proud people. He won't come near such loathsome lepers! Therefore as ever you would enjoy God's presence, arm yourself against pride, watch against pride, and pray hard against pride!

Pride Cannot Live Beneath The Cross

Jesus is the great teacher of 'humility of heart'. We need daily to learn of Him. See the Master taking a towel and washing His disciples feet! Follower of Christ will you not humble yourself? See Him as the Servant of servants and surely you cannot be proud!

Is not this sentence the compendium of His biography: "He humbled Himself." Was He not on earth, always stripping off first one robe of honor and then another until, naked, He was fastened to the cross. There He not emptied out His inmost self, pouring out His life-blood, giving up for all of us, until they laid Him penniless in a borrowed grave. How low was our dear Redeemer brought! How then can we be proud?

Stand at the foot of the cross and count the scarlet drops by which you have been cleansed. See the thorny crown and His scourged shoulders still gushing with the crimson flow of blood. See His hands and feet given up to the rough iron, and His whole self mocked and scorned. See the bitterness, the pangs, and the throes of inward grief show themselves in His outward frame. Hear the chilling shriek, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me!"

If you do not lie prostrate on the ground before that cross, you have never seen it! If you are not humbled in the presence of the sin-atoning Savior, you do not know Him. You were so lost that nothing could save you, but the sacrifice of God's only begotten Son. Think of that, and as Jesus stooped for you, bow yourself in humility at His feet.

A realization of Christ's amazing sacrificial love has a greater tendency to humble us than even a consciousness of our own guilt. May the Lord bring us in contemplation, to Calvary. Then our position will no longer be that of pompous pride but we shall take the humble place of one who loves much, because much has been forgiven him.

Pride cannot live beneath the cross! Let us sit there and learn our lesson. Then let us rise and carry it into practice.

[Charles H. Spurgeon]

Matthew 11:29 … Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

A Sight of God!

Job now saw God in another manner than he had ever done before. He saw more of His greatness and glory, of His power and majesty, of His holiness and sovereignty, of His grace and mercy. The effect of seeing God: "Therefore I abhor myself." Job had disgusting and humiliating views of himself. Having a clearer and more correct view of his God led him to despise himself, and he turned from himself with loathing! He now abhorred the rashness he had displayed, the impatience He had manifested, the complaints he had uttered, the self-righteousness he had indulged, and the aspersions he had cast on his God.

Now he says, "I repent." My mind is changed, and I am sorry for my misconduct. According to the custom of the country, and the times in which he lived, he sat down on ashes, put dust on his head, humbling himself before God loathing himself in his own sight for all his abominations.  A sight of God always humbles us!

It humbled the prophet Isaiah, who when he saw God, cried out, "Woe to me, for I am ruined! For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty!" It humbled the apostle Peter, who when he perceived the dignity and glory of Jesus, exclaimed, "Depart from me for I am a sinful man, O Lord!"  It humbled the beloved John, who when Jesus appeared to him in Patmos, fell at His feet as dead!

God's glory always lays the believer in the dust of self-abasement.  Those who know the most of God think the least of themselves.  Pride cannot live in the presence of God. His glory consumes our self-righteousness, dries up our self-admiration, and spoils all our supposed moral beauty.  The higher we rise in our knowledge and enjoyment of God the lower we shall sink in our estimation of ourselves.

"Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes!" True repentance is always attended with self-abhorrence. We abhor not only sinful self; but righteous self!

The more we understand God's love to us, the more we mourn over our sin and sinfulness. The tear of penitence will drop from the eye of faith, on the crystal threshold of the gate of the New Jerusalem. And then the light of glory will extinguish the light of faith and there shall be no more sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain for the former things will have passed away!

[James Smith]

Job 42:5-6 …  I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

Pride!

Many think themselves most humble when they are wholly devoid of this lovely and rare grace.  Often a great show of humility in speech and behavior, covers the rankest and most diabolical pride in the heart! They are filled, it may be, with a high opinion of their self-abasement. Their humility is without one spark of gratitude to God, or any disposition to give Him glory.

The deceitfulness of the heart, and the subtlety of Satan, in no one thing appears so great, as in the workings of pride. Nor have we in anything more cause for continual watchfulness, than pride. Nothing is so subtle, so secret, so insinuating as pride! It often surprises us at an unexpected hour and is in actual possession of us, before we are aware of its approach.

Were we under the continual influence of a humble spirit, our religious attainments would not be so apt to glitter in our own eyes. We would be daily ashamed of, and sorely lament our great blindness and ignorance of God, our astonishing ingratitude, and the coldness of our love to Him!

The spirit of pride is eminently the work of the devil within our souls. Pride enters into the very essence of every other corruption, and is the life and soul of every other sin! Until this wretched pride is in a measure brought down and mortified--no grace will grow and thrive in the heart.

Until we are brought to this state of true humility, taking shame to ourselves, and giving glory to God in and for everything we cannot possibly enjoy communion with God, and growth in grace cannot possibly take place.

Real humility takes nothing to itself, but sin and shame. Real humility gives all the glory to God, who is the Giver of every good and perfect gift.

There is not one single blessing from god that can be received, but by a humble spirit.  Nor can we be partakers of the consolations of Christ, but in proportion as this humble spirit prevails.

[Thomas Charles]

The Ant's Nest!

Never did any sin appear in the life of the vilest wretch who ever lived but look into your own corrupt nature, and there you may see the seed and root that sin and every other sin! There is atheism, idolatry, blasphemy, murder, adultery, and whatever is vile in your heart! Possibly none of these are apparent to you; but there is more in that unfathomable depth of wickedness than you know.

Your corrupt heart is like an ant's nest, which, while the stone lies on it, none of them appear. But take off the stone, and stir them up but with a straw and you will see what a swarm is there, and how lively they are! Just such a sight would your heart afford you did the Lord but withdraw the restraint He has upon it and allow Satan to stir it up by temptation!

Christian! the remembrance of what you are by nature, should keep you humble.

Living in God's Will

Some make a high profession, but live idly. It is an evil thing not to do all of God's will!  Let us examine all of our actions, to see whether they are according to God's will or not. The will of God is our rule and standard. It is the sundial by which we must regulate all our actions. Are our speech, words, and apparel according to God's will? Would Jesus do this?

Misery always attends doing our own will. A proud man thinks it below him to stoop to God's will. The humble says, 'Lord, what would You have me to do?'"

If I Was Qualified ...

Indeed, I believe that the most lively graces, and the most solid comfort are known among the Lord's poor and unlearned people. Every outward advantage has a tendency to nourish the pride of the human heart and requires a proportionate knowledge of the deceitful self and the evil of sin to counter-balance them.

It is no less difficult to have great abilities, than great riches without trusting in them. 1 Timothy 6:17

If I was qualified to search out the best Christian in the kingdom, I would not expect to find him either in a seminary or in a pulpit. I would give the palm to that person who had the lowest thoughts of himself, and the most admiring and loving thoughts of the Savior. And perhaps this person would be some bed-ridden old man or woman or a pauper in a parish workhouse.

The Lord's regard to us, is not to be measured by our theological knowledge but rather by the simplicity of our dependence, and the uniform tenor of our obedience to His will.

[John Newton]

Isaiah 66:2 ... For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the Lord: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

The Humble Christian

The humble Christian will not be easily angered nor will he be dogmatic and judgmental.  He will be compassionate and tender towards the infirmities of his fellow-sinners; knowing, that, if there is any difference between himself and others it is grace of God that has made it. He knows that he has the seeds of every evil in his own heart!

Also, under all trials and afflictions, the humble Christian will look to the hand of the Lord, and lay his mouth in the dust acknowledging that he suffers much less than his iniquities have deserved.  These are some of the advantages and good fruits which the Lord enables us to obtain from that bitter root, indwelling sin.

[John Newton]

The Highest Grace

Let us mark Mary's deep humility in this hymn of praise.  She who was chosen of God to the high honor of being Messiah's mother speaks of her own "humble estate," and acknowledges her need of a "Savior." She uses the language of one who has been taught by the grace of God to feel her own sins, and need a Savior for her own soul.

Let us copy this holy humility of our Lord's mother.  Like her, let us be lowly in our own eyes, and think little of ourselves. Humility is the highest grace that can adorn the Christian character. It is a true saying of an old divine, "A man has just so much Christianity as he has humility." This is the grace which is most suitable to sinful human nature.

Above all, humility is the grace which is within the reach of every converted person! All are not rich. All are not learned. All are not highly gifted. All are not preachers. But all children of God may be clothed with humility!

[J. C. Ryle]

Luke 1:46-55 ... And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,  And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.  For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.  For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.  And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.  He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.   He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.   He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.  He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;  As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.❤

God's Palace!

"Your boasting is not good!" 1 Corinthians 5:6   Pride is the greatest sacrilege, it robs God of His glory.  What a horrid sin is pride! Chrysostom calls it "the mother of Hell." Pride encompasses all vice.  Pride is a spiritual drunkenness, it flies up like wine into the brain and intoxicates it.

Pride is idolatry, a proud man is a self-worshiper. How odious is this sin to God!
"Everyone who is proud in heart, is an abomination to the Lord!" (Proverbs 16:5)  "I hate pride and arrogance!" (Proverbs 8:13)

Those who look at themselves in the magnifying mirror of self-love appear better in their own eyes than they are. There is no idol like self, the proud man bows down to this idol.

Many are proud of their riches. Their hearts swell with their estates. Pride is the rich man's cousin. "Your heart has become proud because of your wealth." (Ezekiel 28:5)

Many are proud of their apparel. They dress in such fashions, as to make the devil fall in love with them! Painted faces, gaudy attire, naked breasts, what are these, but the banners which sinful pride displays?

Many are proud of their beauty. The body is but dust and blood kneaded together. Solomon says, "Beauty is vain." (Proverbs 31:30) Yet some are so vain as to be proud of vanity! Shall dust exalt itself?

Many are proud of their gifts and abilities. These trappings and ornaments do not approve them in God's eyes. An angel is a creature of great abilities; but take away humility from an angel and he is a devil! God loves a humble soul. It is not our high birth but our humble hearts, which God delights in.

Oh, let us search if there is any of this leaven of pride in us! Man is naturally a proud piece of flesh. This sin of pride runs in the blood. There are the seeds of this sin of pride in the best of Christians but the godly do not allow themselves in it. They strive to kill this weed, by mortification.

But certainly where this sin of pride reigns and prevails, it cannot stand with grace. You may as well call him who lacks wisdom, a prudent man; as him who lacks humility, a godly man. "Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." (1 Peter 5:5) Put humility on, as an embroidered robe. It is better to lack anything, rather than humility.

The more value any man has, the more humble he is. Feathers fly up but gold descends! The golden saint descends in humility.

Look at a humble Savior and let your plumes of pride fall off!

A humble heart is God's palace! "For this is what the high and lofty One says; He who lives forever, whose name is holy. I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit." (Isaiah 57:15) A humble heart glories in this, that it is the presence chamber of the great and glorious King!

[Thomas Watson]
