Originally painted this image back in 2019 during the week of Easter. My goal was showing the victorious lion of Judah standing over the empty tomb, having defeated death and the grave.
It is interesting to note that both Jesus and Satan are referred to as lions in the New Testament. (Revelation 5:5 and 1st Peter 5:8)
You could say that the Lion defeated the lion. And the irony is that the Lion used the strongest weapon that the lion has to defeat him:
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil. (Hebrews 2:14)
Through the cross and empty tomb, Jesus took away the biggest power that the enemy has: the sting of death. But in order to take it away, Jesus had to first succumb to it. He went through the sting, so that we don't have to.
